Wife Gets Angry When Her Husband Cares for Their Kids Because She Says It’s “A Woman’s Job”

in Social Issues

Divorce can make communication between two parents complicated, especially when important information keeps getting overlooked. When children, court proceedings, and parenting arrangements are involved, missing one message can have consequences far beyond an ordinary scheduling mistake.

The OP filed for divorce and moved back in with her parents with their two children. During the months that followed, she repeatedly kept her husband informed about an upcoming court conference, first sending him the original details and later forwarding a paper notice with the updated date and time.

She also tried to discuss their future parenting schedule, but he kept putting the conversation aside. Then the conference finally arrived, and he did not show up. The OP expected a confrontation afterward, but her husband’s response was surprisingly unrelated to the court matter. Scroll down to see what happened next!

She sends her husband the court conference details twice, but he misses the hearing and never asks why she failed to remind him

'AITA for not telling my husband about our conference call?'

I (37f) filed for divorce back in September about two weeks before my anniversary.

I moved home with two children (f,m) to my parents and I’ve been here since.

Sometime in October-November, I go online and see there is a conference call scheduled in January.

I let my husband (38m) know about the meeting via text including the name, date, time, and that it is a Zoom call.

I pored into researching what to have available and say to the court.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a paper notice about the conference with a new date and time.

I sent him a photo of the notice that night and informed him of the new date and time.

He asked what happened to the other date… and I said it was probably tentative or they had to push it back.

I had been trying to meet up with him so we can discuss things ahead of court but have yet to sit down and talk.

He has had the kids on two weekends thus far including today.

Last night, I was writing out my thoughts on a schedule for parenting time... Some weeks in the summer.

Alternate major holidays and shorter school breaks.

And every other weekend during the school year. I texted him again and said what do you think about this?

He said “can we stick a pin in this? Do the kids have school tomorrow?” They do not so he has them until this evening because of the snow.

The conference call took place today. He did not show up. I offered to call him. The assistant said I didn’t have to and we continued.

I requested that we be referred to Friend of the Court to get all of our records in writing. We meet with them in a few months.

I was anticipating getting a message or phone call about the zoom meeting from my husband along the lines of… “why didn’t you call me?”

But instead he asked if I had some money to cover a streaming subscription so he can watch a new show he’s been waiting to see.

For context, he is no longer employed and is waiting on unemployment to kick in.

We no longer have our car because it was impounded we were months behind on the payments (before he lost his job).

Now he lives with his brother and family who are mobile so he can drive around as needed.

Once he remembers that we had a court conference, I’m totally expecting a “why didn’t you remind me?” Call or text.

UPDATE: So apparently my brain was exaggerating his reaction the whole time… cause he didn’t ask why didn’t I remind him. Like at all.

There was a pattern I noticed though, he is obviously not reading the texts I’ve been sending him.

The notice (what is this notice you’re talking about?), our daughter’s assignment, and school closings…

I just said, we have access to the same information and don’t beat yourself up. Just be more diligent and attentive in what’s going on.

He said he is juggling a lot… I don’t know what that means exactly but okay guy. If anything more interesting happens, I’ll let y’all know.

There is a particular exhaustion that comes from realizing you may be carrying responsibilities that technically belong to two adults. During a divorce, that feeling can become even sharper because communication is no longer simply about keeping a household running. Court dates, parenting arrangements, school information, and legal decisions can affect an entire family’s future.

The OP’s frustration is understandable because she did not secretly keep the conference call from her husband. She told him about the original date, supplied the name and time, explained that it was on Zoom, and later sent him a photograph of the official notice with the updated date and time.

She was also trying to discuss a proposed parenting schedule with him. In other words, she appears to have treated him as a co-parent despite the separation. His failure to attend therefore wasn’t caused by a lack of information from her. It appears to have been a failure to act on information he already possessed.

A different perspective, however, is that divorce can produce cognitive overload, particularly when someone is dealing with unemployment, housing changes, transportation problems, and uncertainty about the future. His comment that he is “juggling a lot” may genuinely describe an overwhelmed person rather than someone intentionally refusing responsibility.

That explanation can create empathy without transferring the responsibility back onto the OP. Understanding why someone misses something does not mean another adult must continually compensate for it.

Psychologist Lisa Damour has written extensively about how stress can affect concentration, organization, and the ability to manage competing demands. In her work for The New York Times, she explains that significant stress can consume mental resources and make ordinary responsibilities harder to manage.

Research on cognitive load similarly demonstrates that when people are managing numerous competing demands, their attention and working memory can become strained. The American Psychological Association notes that prolonged stress can affect concentration and everyday functioning.

That context makes the later update particularly telling. The husband apparently didn’t accuse her of failing to remind him. Instead, she discovered that he simply wasn’t reading many of the messages she had been sending, including information about the court notice, school assignments, and closures.

His circumstances may explain that behavior, but the practical consequence remains the same: the OP cannot be both his former spouse and his personal information-management system.

This distinction becomes especially important once children are involved. Co-parenting does not require the parents to have identical organizational abilities or circumstances. It does require each parent to make a reasonable effort to remain informed.

A parent who misses a message can ask questions, check available records, contact the school, or review court information independently. Otherwise, the more organized parent can gradually become responsible for everything.

The OP’s response to the update was actually measured. Rather than attacking him, she acknowledged that he was juggling a lot and encouraged him to be more diligent and attentive. That is considerably different from punishing him for missing the conference.

She also did something important by requesting involvement from the Friend of the Court. Written records and clearly documented parenting arrangements can reduce the amount of information that has to travel informally between two separated parents. That protects both adults from misunderstandings and, more importantly, gives the children a more predictable structure.

The lesson here isn’t that the husband is necessarily careless or malicious. It is that his responsibilities remain his responsibilities even when life becomes difficult.

The OP can communicate important information, but she cannot reasonably be expected to chase him until he acts on it. Sometimes the healthiest boundary during separation is simply providing the information once, documenting it, and allowing each adult to manage their own obligations.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters stressed that OP’s ex is an adult and must handle his own appointments, responsibilities, and obligations

whoreallycarz − NTA - it doesn't sound like either of you are letting go of the roles you developed in your marriage.

He's not your responsibility. Not to pay for his wants, not to remind him of his appointments, not to tell him whether his children have school.

When he asks why you didn't remind him tell him it's because you're not his mother and he is an adult who can manage his own business.

daddymememaster125 − Nta- did you divorce him because he couldn’t get it together?

That’s not your job, never should’ve been and it’s not anymore. Let him fall.

[Reddit User] − You sent him the notice of the date. It was HIS responsibility to show up. It’s not your job to be his Secretary or mother.

The court told you not to call because I’m sure they’re used to dad’s doing this ALL the time. He’s a financial disaster too.

I’d tell him that it’s HIS responsibility to show up, and it’s not your job to remind him.

These Redditors criticized the ex for expecting OP to organize his life after their marriage had ended

servitor_dali − "why didn't you remind me? ?"

Because you aren't his mother and you aren't his wife anymore and he doesn't even have a job so what else does he have to do?

Nothing. I can see why you left.

literaryescape − My now XH moved and didn't get the finalization date for our divorce.

I got a call from him (word gets around fast) afterwards in which he started to yell at me asking why I didn't tell him.

I simply said. .. "I'm not your mother and as of X hours ago, I am not longer your wife.

Time for you to grow up and take responsibility for something! " Decades later and it is still one of my favorite memories.

Dapper-Survey1964 − You're the a__hole to yourself for maintaining an expectation that you'll be his secretary.

Jacaranda18 − My ex was like this OP. His attorney had the gall to try to tell me it was my responsibility to schedule meetings with teachers for him.

Judge told him he needs to do all that himself. No one is calling you to remind you of stuff. Why should he get special treatment?

This group felt OP should stop rescuing her disengaged ex and allow him to deal with his own mistakes

okileggs1992 − NTA, I would suggest therapy to go over what your mental and physical load is with your children.

Your former spouse has losst his job and disengaged from the process.

bia834 − Text him why did not show up for the zoom meeting ? When he gets upset and askes you why you did not call him.

Say that is not my responsibility and was in the meeting and did what I was supposed to do. Tell him it be a good idea to get his head...

Emergency-Ad9791 − NTA. He is a grown ass man and should have been able to handle it himself.

When he asks you about it, tell him you are no longer responsible for him making meetings or not.

Can a couple maintain a traditional marriage while allowing parenting roles to evolve? Was the wife’s reaction about her values, her identity, or something deeper? And should this dad compromise on household roles, or insist that breakfast duty is simply part of being a father?
