He Tried to Practice Better Hygiene at 27—and Accidentally Tore Out Part of His Toenail

Sometimes you reach your late 20s and suddenly discover that there are apparently dozens of completely normal things everyone else learned years ago.

For me, one of those discoveries involved towels.

Growing up, my family always used a fresh towel every time. Because of that, I genuinely never understood why people had towel racks until I was about 26. I assumed you just used a towel once and tossed it in the laundry.

'TIFU by practicing self-hygiene too late, and removal hurt worse than leaving it?'

So, to put things simply, I have never been someone who automatically picks things up. I kinda just "discover" as I go, things that most people have been doing for...

Sometimes its an innocent thing I am technically doing better than the norm, like how my family has always just used towels ONCE rather than reusing a towel for a...

One I discovered very recently that I definitely was behind curve on, was cleaning under toenails when I clip them.

I just noticed a little flap looking thing under my toenail while routinely cleaning and trimming, thought it was weird, and then I realized "holy s__t, theres an entire buildup...

No smell, no nothing, just a weird gunk. I assume it was a buildup of keratin from the nail repeatedly being lightly chipped off due to impacts over the years.

Well anyways, there was a part of me that was like "well damn, maybe if its all here, I should just leave it, its not hurting me".

Not listening to that was the start of my fuckup.

In what would have been a banger of an episode of Oddly Satisfying, over the course of about an hour at 2AM, I used one of those spoon looking picks...

It wasn't a crazy quantity, but it was a very notable amount that should definitely have not been there, and it looked kinda n__ty. After removing it all, my toes...

Now, two weeks later, applying LIGHT pressure to either of my toes in the area where that keratin buildup was, causes a LOT of pain. A gentle tap on the...

Like I swear a gentle breeze is nearly enough to cause me pain in my toes. I have no clue how much I will continue suffering with this, but it...

Moral of the story, dont be like me. Clean under your toenails NOW so you dont remove it all at once after living your whole life with it. Also, apologies...

TL;DR, I cleaned under my toenails and removed a lot of keratin buildup after literally never doing it in my life (27 years), and the aftermath has been brutally painful.

Edit: Massive thanks to user r/wavydaby for letting me know that what I tore out on both toes is the hyponychium, a f__king beneficial thing for feet that most people...

Also yall, you can stop being rude to me about "not bathing" and s__t, like what the hell is this? I literally mentioned in my post that I was in...

Recently, I discovered another gap in my education: apparently, you’re supposed to pay attention to what’s happening underneath your toenails.

I was 27 when I noticed something strange while clipping my toenails. There was a little flap underneath one of my big toenails. At first I thought it was just some random buildup, but after looking closer, I realized there was a surprisingly large amount of material underneath the nail.

There was no smell, nothing obviously wrong with the nail, and I assumed it was simply years of accumulated keratin and dead skin.

My first thought was, Well, it’s been there this long and hasn’t caused a problem. Maybe I should just leave it alone.

That would have been the smart decision.

Instead, at around 2 a.m., I decided I was going to clean everything out.

For approximately the next hour, I used one of those tiny spoon-shaped tools people use to get meat out of crab legs and painstakingly scraped underneath both of my big toenails.

And, honestly, it was strangely satisfying.

I kept pulling out little pieces of material until I eventually got everything I could see.

When I was finished, my toes felt strangely light and free.

They also felt a little numb.

That should probably have been my first clue that I had done something incredibly stupid.

Two weeks later, I was paying the price

At first, I assumed everything would heal normally.

Instead, the slightest pressure on either big toe became excruciating.

Bumping one against a doorframe?

Absolutely horrible.

Running?

Painful.

Putting my shoes on too quickly?

Apparently a form of torture.

Even a gentle tap on the affected area could send pain shooting through my toe.

I started wondering what exactly I had removed.

Then someone in the comments gave me the answer I really didn’t want to hear.

Apparently, I probably hadn’t removed some disgusting collection of “gunk.”

I had likely damaged or removed my hyponychium—the specialized tissue beneath the free edge of the nail.

The hyponychium isn’t simply dirt or dead material. It forms part of the protective barrier underneath the nail and helps prevent germs and irritants from getting beneath the nail plate.

So that hour I spent proudly “cleaning” my toenails may have actually been me removing something my body had put there for a reason.

Fantastic.

Here's how people reacted to the post:

Wavydaby − You didn't get gunk out, you tore off the hyponychium.

JAM3S89 − I feel like we are all missing the most important part of this story… you get a fresh towel everyday ? Who the f__k has time for that...

jeswesky − Pretty sure you have an overgrowth of [hyponychium](https://www. healthline. com/health/hyponychium#summary).

Ohshiznoodlemuffins − That doesn't sound normal after this amount of time. You should probably consult a doctor.

oneizm − … you realize most people nails shouldn’t be long enough for any kind of build up to occur right?

kochameh2 − if you think it's a bit red/puffy/raw feeling, put a glob of some neosporin on there. could be a bit infected if it's that sensitive

izzittho − Idk how to tell you this bro but anything you need to clean out from under your toenails tends to go with the toenail when you cut it....

voodoobunny999 − Do not eat crab at this guy’s house.

-Sinnex − Hate to break it to you, but I think that was your hyponychium

FL-Cracker − I'm 63 and have never cleaned under my toenails, because nothing builds up if you clip them on a regular basis.

The lesson I learned

The biggest irony is that I thought I was improving my hygiene.

Keeping nails clean is obviously important. Dirt, bacteria, dead skin cells and other debris can accumulate around and underneath nails, and gentle cleaning with soap, water and a soft nail brush is generally recommended.

The problem was that I apparently went from “I should take better care of my toenails” to “let me excavate underneath my nail with a miniature crab-picking instrument.”

Those are not the same thing.

Looking back, I should have left anything firmly attached to the nail alone instead of assuming it was simply buildup that needed to be removed.

And if something underneath a nail looks unusual, painful or excessively thick, it’s probably better to have a medical professional figure out what it is rather than conducting your own 2 a.m. podiatric excavation.

I also learned that I apparently wasn’t the only person who didn’t understand exactly what the tissue underneath the nail was for.

But I’m probably the only one who decided to personally remove it.

So, if there’s one thing I hope people take away from my spectacular failure, it’s this:

Take care of your toenails—but don’t go digging under them like you’re searching for buried treasure.

And if something under your nail is painful or looks abnormal, don’t assume it’s just dirt. It can have several causes, and persistent pain or changes deserve proper evaluation.

As for me, I’m going to let my toes heal, keep my nail clippers handy, and retire from amateur foot surgery permanently.

TL;DR: I discovered a buildup underneath my toenails after 27 years of apparently not knowing what I was doing. I spent an hour scraping it out with a tiny tool, only to discover I may have removed part of my hyponychium, a protective structure under the nail. Two weeks later, even lightly bumping my toes was incredibly painful. My attempt at better hygiene somehow became one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done.
