Woman Wins “Perfect Date Night” Prize While Divorcing, Friend Says She Shouldn’t Keep It

Local festivals are usually harmless fun, filled with food, games, and small moments that make a town feel like home. Sometimes, though, they come with unexpected twists that spark far more debate than anyone anticipates. A simple decision made on a whim can suddenly turn into a moral question that leaves people oddly divided.

In this Reddit post, the OP entered a free drawing at a small town festival without thinking much of it. When her name was called, she realized the prize was labeled as a “perfect date night,” despite the fact that she is recently divorced and not interested in dating at all.

Instead of seeing a problem, she found a way to make the prize meaningful for herself and her kids. Not everyone around her agreed, and that disagreement quickly turned into a bigger issue.

AITA for entering and keeping the prize from a drawing when I'm not the intended demographic?

Over the weekend, my town had a bolognafest.

No, I didn't spell anything wrong.

Yes, I'm from a redneck Midwest town.

It was kind of a trunk or treat with little games the kids could play.

Kinda cute. While my kids were playing one of the games,

someone asked me if I wanted to enter a drawing.

Why not? So I did. Well, I won.

Because the universe wanted a laugh.

It was for a "perfect date night."

This is the part where I mention that I'm divorcing my cheating husband

and I'm not dating anyone and have no interest in dating anyone.

The prize was a fire pit, a $50 gift certificate to an Italian restaurant,

a $10 gift card to a florist, 2 Halloween themed plush blankets,

a nice scented candle, a picture frame, and a box of hot chocolate.

The kids and I can enjoy an evening roasting marshmallows over the fire pit.

They each got a cute blanket. We all enjoy hot chocolate.

The Italian restaurant has a kids menu, so the three of us can go one night.

Overall, it's a prize that I can enjoy with my kids.

One of my friends, also single, said I shouldn't have even entered

at least should have turned down the prize since it was meant for a couple and I'm happily unattached.

She said it goes against the spirit of the drawing.

So, reddit, AITA for keeping a date night prize to enjoy with my kids instead of a partner?

There are moments when life hands someone something unexpectedly kind, and instead of relief, it comes wrapped in guilt. Many people know this feeling well, the sense that joy must be justified, earned, or aligned with someone else’s expectations, especially after a difficult chapter like a divorce.

In this situation, the OP wasn’t just deciding whether to keep a prize from a community drawing. She was navigating the fragile emotional space of rebuilding life after betrayal.

Recently separated from a cheating spouse, she wasn’t seeking romance or validation. Her choice to enter the drawing was casual, even lighthearted, but winning it landed during a time when she was actively redefining what happiness looks like.

The prize didn’t represent a “date” to her; it represented warmth, safety, and small pleasures she could share with her children. The discomfort came not from her own doubts, but from a friend questioning whether she was “allowed” to enjoy it.

A different perspective emerges when looking at why her friend reacted so strongly. While some may frame it as concern for fairness, psychology suggests it may be more about projection.

When people see someone reclaim joy outside traditional narratives, like romance after divorce, it can unsettle their own beliefs about what happiness is supposed to look like.

For a newly single woman choosing contentment with her kids over dating, that choice quietly challenges the idea that being unattached is something that must be temporary or fixed.

Psychologist Dr. Alexandra Solomon explains that after a breakup, people often experience a destabilization of identity rather than a simple emotional reaction. As she notes, “when people were going through a breakup, their self-concept clarity tanked. It was like they didn’t know who they were anymore.”

This insight helps illuminate why external judgment during a phase of self-repair, when someone is redefining joy and rebuilding life after betrayal, can trigger unnecessary shame, even when no ethical line has been crossed.

Viewed through this lens, the OP’s choice wasn’t opportunistic or insensitive; it was restorative. She took something labeled for couples and reshaped it into something meaningful for her family, reinforcing stability and connection during a vulnerable time.

The drawing didn’t specify relationship status, and the festival itself was family-oriented. The prize fulfilled its purpose: creating a positive memory.

Perhaps the most grounded takeaway is that joy doesn’t need to fit a label to be valid. Healing often looks ordinary: hot chocolate, shared blankets, and a fire pit in the backyard. When happiness arrives without hurting anyone, it doesn’t need to be handed back. It just needs to be lived.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters fully backed the winner, calling the friend jealous

UusiSisu − NTA you were asked to enter a drawing for a prize.

You won. Your friend is simply jealous.

It sounds like you had your perfect “date night”!

owls_and_cardinals − NTA. Heavy eye roll on this.

Your friend should stay out of it.

No one is entitled to tell you how to use a prize you won,

and the fact that it was packaged up as a 'date night'

as hell doesn't mean that's the only allowable use.

It sounds like you'll put the whole thing to good use which is awesome

but even if you did nothing with it, it's not anyone else's business.

It does not go against the spirit of the drawing

and I have no idea why your friend wants to punish you for being single.

seeemilyplay123 − NTA. Your friend should shut up.

This is your date night prize to enjoy however you wish! You 100% deserve it.

This group loved the irony and praised turning it into family time

Nimindir − I literally laughed out loud at the irony, but, f__k it.

You won it, it's yours, use it however you wish.

I love that you're spending it on your kids.

I hate that people are objecting to you spending it on your kids.

Who needs it more; a happy couple, or the kids of an unhappy couple? EDIT: NTA

extinct_diplodocus − NTA. The prize was billed as a "perfect date night"

and not a "perfect romantic date night".

This does give you and your kids a perfect date night.

Congratulations! Your friend should be happy for you, but she seems to be motivated by envy.

The contest runners didn't check that you met particular requirements

and don't seem unhappy at the results.

Your idea of a perfect date differs from hers,

but she doesn't get to gatekeep how you choose to date.

Ignore the envy and enjoy.

All that aside, the fest was aimed at families with kids,

so you certainly were the target demographic.

Mamacat192188 − lol your friend is just bitter and wants you to give her the gift.

Enjoy the treats with your kids and get yourself some pretty flowers with that last prize.

Miley would approve. NTA

They questioned how a fire pit even counts as a romantic prize

rubikscanopener − How is a fire pit a "date night" prize? "Hey, sweetie.

For our next date, maybe we can do some quick landscaping in my backyard.

I've been thinking about putting in a fire pit!

SarkyMs − Did you enter a picture (drawing) or a prize draw (UK name) where they pull your name out of a hat?

These users emphasized that there were no rules; entry meant eligibility

ProfessorYaffle1 − NTA, I thought from the headline

that you were going to say you'd won a competition that was aimed at kids ,

or something like that! You're absolutely fine, the spirit of the drawing was, presumably, to raise money.

The demographic it was for was 'people willing to pay for a ticket'.

You paid your entry fee, you won, you are fine. Enjoy your treats.

your friend is being utterly ridiculous.

Jbwood − NTA. I swear, women having single women friends is the most toxic relationship ever.

Half the stories I read can be traced back to a single lady friend who is jealous.

You won the prize. The end. It don't matter if you want to burn it all immediately

because you hate the idea of dating now. It's yours. No "intended demographics" needed.

What they wanted was your money and they got i

What could’ve been a lighthearted win turned into a lesson about projection and joy-policing. Most readers agreed the prize wasn’t wasted; it was repurposed in a way that actually mattered. The bigger takeaway? Happiness doesn’t have to look romantic to be valid.

Do you think prizes need to be used exactly as labeled, or does intention matter more than packaging? And why do people get so invested in how others enjoy good fortune? Drop your thoughts below.
