Man Catches His Brother Having an Affair With His New Wife, Then Four Years Later His Parents Demand a Wedding Invitation

Moving on from betrayal does not always mean rebuilding every relationship that was destroyed by it.

Sometimes moving on simply means creating a new life without the people who caused the damage.

That is where one Redditor finds himself four years after learning that his brother and then-wife were secretly involved with each other.

He divorced his wife, cut off his brother, and made it clear that his parents were free to maintain their own relationship with him as long as they kept the two sides separate.

Now the poster is engaged again, but his parents insist his upcoming wedding should include the whole family and have threatened not to attend unless his brother receives an invitation.

Keep reading to see why the poster is starting to wonder whether their pressure is reason enough to distance himself from them too.

A groom reconsiders his relationship with his parents after they pressure him to invite the brother who betrayed him

not the actual photo

'My parents (69M, 65F) won't come to my wedding because I (30M) won't invite my brother (32M) or my ex-wife (30F)?'

Four years ago I was a newlywed when I found out my brother and (now ex)

wife were having an affair. It started the day before we got married and

was about seven weeks in when I found out about it because my brother's

(now ex) wife went through his phone and found their texts and she

approached me with them. I checked my ex's phone and it was 100%

confirmed. Ex-SIL and I confronted them together and they promised it

would never happen again but we both divorced their asses. My brother

and ex-SIL had kids together but thankfully me and my ex did not.

I refused to have anything more to do with my brother or my ex. I told my

parents I would never ask them to choose but their relationship with us had

to be separate now. They were upset and they told me they understood but believed I would calm down eventually.

My brother and ex are in a very on and off relationship and they have a one

year old son together. From what I have heard there has been so much s__t

between them. Both have attempted to contact me over the last three

years but I have refused to entertain either of them. I never want anything to do with either of them again and I stand by it.

This is why, now that I'm remarrying, I have not invited either. My fiancée

supports this 100% and she doesn't want my brother or ex there either. My

parents have however decided that a line should be drawn now that I

moved on and I should be willing to be a family again because I never met

my brother and ex's child and have denied them the chance to have their

family all in one room. They also said a wedding is supposed to include the

whole family. I told them it does, because that a__hole is no longer my family.

Now my parents have decided they won't come unless I invite my brother.

I'm standing on business that he's not welcome and neither is my ex who

would be there if he gets an invite. They weren't expecting it so they keep

reminding me they won't come but they sound less sure each time and I'm

questioning if having them in my life brings enough value to be worth all

this. I know they'll start some b__lshit when I have kids about knowing their

uncle or some s__t and that's going to be a hell no from me.

So I want relationship advice because my parents using their attendance to

make me invite my brother is making me reconsider our relationship.

Sometimes the deepest family wounds are not created by strangers, but by the people who were supposed to be safest.

The OP was betrayed by two people at once: his new wife and his own brother.

Four years later, his parents seem to be treating the passage of time and his upcoming marriage as evidence that the damage should now be considered finished.

But moving forward with life is not the same thing as restoring access to the people who caused the original harm.

Infidelity already creates a severe rupture in trust.

The Gottman Institute describes affairs as particularly destabilizing because betrayal can make the injured person feel as though the ground beneath the relationship has disappeared.

Repair is possible in some relationships, but it requires accountability, consistent trustworthy behavior, and a genuine willingness from the injured person to rebuild.

It cannot simply be declared complete by other family members.

That distinction matters here because the OP has not spent four years demanding that everyone else reject his brother.

He explicitly allowed his parents to maintain their own relationship with him.

His boundary was much narrower: he personally wanted no relationship with either betrayer.

His parents are now changing that arrangement by using their attendance at his wedding as leverage.

Family estrangement is also more common and complicated than the cultural idea that relatives should always reconcile suggests.

Developmental psychologist Lucy Blake, speaking with the American Psychological Association, explains that estrangement can arise from painful events in adulthood and that researchers still do not have a simple formula for when reunion is appropriate.

She specifically notes that sibling relationships can fracture over major family events and that estrangement often carries genuine feelings of loss and uncertainty.

The parents may genuinely believe they are trying to reunite their family.

Their mistake is assuming that “family unity” requires the OP to reopen a relationship he deliberately closed.

A wedding is particularly inappropriate territory for testing reconciliation.

It should not become an emotional hostage negotiation in which the groom must invite someone who betrayed him in order to earn his parents’ presence.

That does not mean the OP needs to cut his parents off immediately.

A clearer boundary would be useful first: his brother will not attend the wedding, future children will not automatically create an uncle relationship, and these subjects are not open to repeated negotiation.

Then the parents can choose what they do with that information.

If they stay home, that will understandably change how the OP views them.

Boundaries do not control other people’s decisions; they reveal which relationships can survive without one person surrendering their limits.

The important question is therefore not whether the OP has “moved on.” He clearly has.

It is whether his parents can accept that healing does not require reconciliation.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors backed OP’s firm boundaries and urged him not to let his parents pressure him

MonikerSchmoniker − “Mom and Dad, YOU are the ones who need to make

a choice as MINE is firm. IF you want a relationship with ME and MY family,

including any further children I have, YOU will stop making my relationship

with YOU about my ex-brother and his mistress. I need an answer within a

week, YOUR answer will be considered final. ”

Agnesperdita − “ … that I should be willing to be a family again”. You are a

family. Your family no longer includes your brother, who betrayed you

unforgivably, or your ex-wife, who did the same. Your parents have the

right not to come if they don’t want to, but it will be their decision not to support your family, not yours.

Sounds like they don’t care about being part of your family either.

Papapeta33 − HOLD. THE. LINE. Family is complicated. But this fact pattern is not. You hold that line, good sir.

catsarehere77 − Your parents lack empathy for the way you were betrayed.

They are trying to manipulate you into getting their way. Don't send the

message you can be bullied into accepting your brother. You can just tell them you respect their decision not to attend.

Tell them you won't force them to do what they don't want to do just like

you won't be forced to do what you don't want to do.

These commenters encouraged OP to enjoy his wedding without allowing family conflict to ruin it

z-eldapin − Tell your parents that you are sorry that they'll miss your

wedding, but you'll be sure to tag them when you post the photos online.

NoahVail2024 − Have a wonderful wedding without your parents or

betraying former brother or betraying ex wife. No need for their noise and wrong headed nonsense.

pancho_2504 − You're doing the right thing. Enjoy your day, keep your

peace and I wish you every happiness for your future.

Next_Cartographer732 − congrats on your wedding and don’t let anyone

put a damper on it. the passage of time is not an apology and i don’t even

know what kind of apology would be “good enough” to come back from a betrayal like that. you’re making the right move!

These users advised OP to let his parents decide whether to attend while maintaining his own boundaries

Cultural_Shape3518 −   They weren't expecting it so they keep reminding

me they won't come but they sound less sure each time Good.  They’re the

ones who refuse to understand that him being your brother doesn’t make

up for him blowing up your life and proving he can’t be trusted to exercise good judgment or morals.

If they’re having doubts whether that’s the hill they want to die on, or

simply starting to get it through their heads you’re actually serious about

that, let them sit with it.  Just tell them you know and they don’t need to keep repeating it, and go about your life.

You can decide what to do about reaching out to or inviting them to other stuff as you go.

Donewithit_6607 − Even if at some point you may reconsider the

relationship with your brother, your wedding day is not the day. Leave

mom & dad the option to come if they wish. Your wedding day is not the day for ultimatums, either.

Sensitive_Hat_9871 − Do not dis-invite your parents. The decision to attend

your wedding or not will be theirs. It will also give you insight as to whose

'side' they're on. It sounds like they're trying to force a reconcilliation 'at

any cost' and don't appear to care that you're the aggrieved party - they

just want the family back together again. Bear their decision in mind going forward.

You'll probably want to be 'less available' in attending future family parties

or allowing their future grandchildren to spend time with them.

This isn’t really about whether he has “moved on.”

It’s about whether moving on requires reopening a relationship with two people who betrayed him in one of the deepest ways possible.

His parents are free to maintain a relationship with his brother, but using their wedding attendance as leverage crosses into manipulation.

He has already made his boundary clear, and his fiancée supports it. If his parents choose not to attend, that is their decision.

Do you think he should keep the door open with them afterward, or is this ultimatum enough reason to step back too?
