Moana 2” is directed by David G. Derrick Jr. and will see the return of familiar voices, including Auli’i Cravalho as Moana, Johnson as Maui, and Alan Tudyk as Heihei the Chicken. Johnson recently hinted at the completion of his voice recording sessions with a snapshot from the recording booth, taken by his daughter.
Besides, the Fast & Furious star is also set to portray a live-action version of Maui in a separate “Moana” live-action remake scheduled to start filming later this year—a project that Auli’i Cravalho is not part of.
The official synopsis provided by Disney teases an adventurous sequel where “Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
Initially announced as a Disney+ series, the project’s transition to a theatrical release was warmly received by fans, a change driven by the high quality of the production and the enduring popularity of the original film on Disney+.
“We were impressed with what we saw, and we knew it deserved a theatrical release. The original Moana film from 2016 recently crossed 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ and was the most-streamed movie of 2023 on any platform in the U.S,” Iger told The Wrap, explaining the decision to make Moana 2 into a movie.
Moana 2 will set sail again this November 27. We are so back, Disney fans.
