When Fallon asked Tatum about the possibility of a solo Gambit film, the actor didn’t hold back in his playful response.
“I would kill kittens to make… I would do lots of terrible things to make that happen,” Tatum quipped, showing just how much he’s still invested in the character.
For those who may not know, Tatum was once on track to star in a standalone Gambit film within the X-Men universe. The movie was set to be released in 2019 but was ultimately shelved after Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, leaving Tatum’s portrayal of the charming mutant on hold
The conversation with Fallon came after Tatum recently made a cameo as Gambit in the upcoming movie Deadpool & Wolverine, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.
Tatum took a moment to express his gratitude to Reynolds for helping bring Gambit back to life, even if just for a brief appearance.
“Ryan — I’ve said this before. Look, this industry is a really interesting thing. And like, I can honestly say that not one single person is just more of a class act and cares more than that man,” Tatum shared during the interview.
He went on to praise Reynolds for his dedication to making the cameo happen.
“Like, he took Gambit out of truly, like, the grave,” Tatum continued. “Like, it was just nothing and nowhere, and he was like, ‘No, man, I want this.”
“I want this for you, I want this in the movie, and I want to see it.’ And he made it happen. And I’ll forever be grateful to him.”
While Tatum’s solo Gambit movie may never have come to fruition, his recent cameo has given fans a glimmer of hope that they might see more of the character in the future.
Gambit was last portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but Tatum has made it clear that he still has a deep connection to the role.
Beyond his Gambit aspirations, Tatum is also staying busy with other projects. He’s set to star in Blink Twice, a psychological thriller directed by his fiancée, actress Zoë Kravitz. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on August 23.
