A Dorm Room Prank Teaches a Guest a Very Big Lesson About Hygiene

We have all been there. Living in a college dorm often feels like a never-ending sleepover with friends and sometimes total strangers. While sharing pizza and study notes is part of the fun, some boundaries are simply meant to be respected.

One Redditor recently returned to their shared apartment to find a very unpleasant surprise. A guest had helped themselves to a personal razor without asking first. It is the kind of small invasion of privacy that can make anyone feel a bit uneasy.

Instead of a typical argument, this student decided to use a very creative and slightly spooky method to teach a lesson. By telling a little white lie about a medical condition, they sent a message that will likely never be forgotten. It is a tale of dorm room survival and the ultimate lesson in bathroom etiquette.

The Story

Use my razor, congrats, you now have Hepatitis B!?

Back in college I lived in a six-man apartment style dorm that had shared living spaces and three bathrooms.

Some of my roomies had guests over one weekend when I was out of town and when I got back on Sunday night,

I noticed that my razor had hair stubble in it. I didn't think much about it, but it was one of those

expensive refill razors, and later on one of the guests "asked" me if it was okay if they had used my razor.

I was kinda miffed about what this lazy a__hole had done, so I told him I was okay with it, but

that he should probably get checked for Hepatitis B, since I was infected since age twelve (I wasn't) when I had

a bad blood transfusion in Vietnam when my family was on vacation. The entire group hearing this dropped silent and the

offending a__hole turned white. I told him "sorry man, I didn't expect you to use my razor, otherwise, I would have

given you a new blade or disinfected it for you. You better get a blood test." The guy asked me

if I was serious, and I said "as serious as a heart attack and two kidney failures". A few hours

later, my roomie asked if it was true and I said "yes". I am guessing his friend must have s__t

his pants. I let the lie go for about a week and then I fessed up, evil f__k that I am..

Edit: I bolded the part telling everyone reading this that I was never actually infected with HepB.

Oh goodness, the thought of finding someone else’s stubble in your personal razor is enough to make anyone want to jump right into a hot shower. It is such a strange thing to borrow a stranger’s personal care items without a second thought.

This story is a fascinating look at how a little bit of petty creativity can be used to handle a rude situation. While a fake medical diagnosis is a very bold move, it certainly ensures the lesson sticks for a lifetime. You can almost feel the tension in that room when the “truth” was revealed. Transitioning into the science of it all shows just how lucky that guest actually was.

Expert Opinion

This encounter brings up two very interesting topics: personal boundaries and the very real risks of shared hygiene. From a social perspective, the “medical scare” is a powerful tool used to enforce a rule that someone else has ignored.

According to reports from Healthline, sharing razors is actually quite risky even without a fake diagnosis. Razors can collect tiny, invisible amounts of blood and bacteria. Diseases like Hepatitis B and C are very hardy and can live on surfaces for quite a while.

Even though the Redditor was making a point with a lie, the underlying medical warning was actually based on reality. The Guest was taking a huge gamble with their health for the sake of a quick shave. It is a helpful reminder that “personal” care items are labeled that way for a reason.

Psychologically, the Guest likely experienced a “fight or flight” response when they heard the news. When we feel we have made a mistake that impacts our health, our brains go into overdrive. Psychology Today notes that boundary crossing often happens because of a lack of social awareness or entitlement.

A study from the Journal of Family Psychology discusses how direct consequences help shape better behavior in shared living spaces. The Redditor decided that a simple “please do not do that” was not enough. They felt a memorable scare would be more effective for a guest who did not show much respect.

At its core, this story is about how we value our own bodies and our personal spaces. The father’s fictional backstory about a blood transfusion gave the lie just enough weight to be believable. It serves as a stark warning to anyone tempted to grab a “spare” razor in a friend’s bathroom.

Community Opinions

The internet community found the story both hilarious and deeply satisfying. Many people could relate to the feeling of having their personal space violated in a dorm setting.

Commenters agreed that sharing razors is a massive hygiene mistake.
[Reddit User] − Who the f__k uses a strangers products that have come in contact with their stranger blood? ?!?

wagenejm − Who f__king uses a used razor of someone they don't know? Should have them it was HIV.

GalileoRules − Gotta be very stupid to use someone else's razor.

People praised the prank as a highly effective teaching tool.
Seven_pile − Guarantee that guy knows so much about hep B now.

Arokthis − You are an evil b__tard. Good job.

diddlydomly − You're one cruel b__tard mate, I love this revenge. Serves him right for using your razor.

[Reddit User] − I was ready to downvote you for giving someone hepatitis, but this is perfect. Well played, OP

Many users shared their own similar stories or curiosities about the science.
ItsGotToMakeSense − Similar thing happened to me but with my clippers, and I told him I didn't mind that he borrowed them

but if he'd asked I would've warned him those were for trimming my balls and taint. I wasn't lying though

CookieKedavra − What Happened after you fessed up?

VXTrentXV − Saw this on an AMA earlier this week, still makes me smile at the pettiness.

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

Living with roommates is all about clear communication. If someone crosses a line, it is important to address it right away. You do not always have to create a medical mystery, but being firm is key to keeping your peace.

Try to keep your personal items in a separate, secure caddy. This is a very easy way to prevent “accidental” borrowing. If a guest does use something, explain calmly why it is a health concern. It helps to stay neutral but direct about your rules for your own body and property.

If you are a guest, always remember to bring your own supplies. If you forget something, simply ask or take a trip to a local shop. Respecting someone’s home means respecting their private belongings too.

Conclusion

In the end, this dorm room legend is a quirky reminder that privacy is a shared responsibility. The Redditor’s creative lie might have been a bit mischievous, but it certainly protected their personal boundaries in the future.

What is your take on this little white lie? Was it a brilliant way to handle a rude guest, or did the “educational scare” go a little too far? We would love to hear your funniest dorm room boundary stories below.
