A Stranger’s Child Crawled Through Their Dog Door And Helped Himself To Snacks, His Parents Shrugged It Off

in Social Issues

For most people, home is the one place where they expect complete privacy and peace of mind. Whether you live in a busy city or on a quiet country road, few things are more unsettling than realizing a stranger has wandered onto your property without permission.

When that stranger happens to be a young child, the situation becomes even more complicated, leaving homeowners torn between protecting themselves and worrying about someone else’s safety.

That is exactly the dilemma one rural homeowner found herself facing after an unexpected visitor showed up not once, but twice.

'AIO - a little kid keeps coming into my house?'

i live out in the country, near a big main road and on a county road. im the closest property to the main road but as you continue down i...

we live on 40 acres and have a little farmhouse, where i live with my husband and dogs, along with some farm animals outside. i do not have kids.

we live a calm and peaceful life, however there have now been two occasions on which a young child that lives a third of a mile down the road has...

the first time, i was home alone and had just showered, doing my nails and watching a show in my makeup room. next thing i know, i see a small...

i had no idea who this was and i facetimed my husband in case he knew who this could be, but as we checked the cameras, there were no cars...

i was in my underwear, with my door closed and freaking out. like i mentioned, i lived out in the country, and due to my neighbors all being so far...

I put some pants on and went out into my living room, and this kid was running around my living room and kitchen, playing with my dogs with no worry...

i tried to get him to calm down and asked him what his name was or where his parents were and nothing.

he ignored me and kept playing. after a couple of minutes, i think he got bored, and he opened my door, went out the gate, and ran out to the...

i lost sight of him and continued to look out towards the road in case i could figure out where he came from.

finally, i saw a young girl approaching from the neighbors side of the road and she shouted at me “where is he!!?” i told her i had no idea where...

she looked annoyed but i guess she was able to grab him at some point and took him back towards the direction our neighbors house is at.

at that point i had honestly been super upset a yelled “keep that kid out of my property and out of my house” to which she just yelled “sorry” over...

after that, no one ever came back to apologize. my husband eventually went to the family to ask what had happened and was told that they had been unloading groceries...

a year later, i would say this little boy is 5 or 6 now, i get a call from my husband while we are at work. he tells me theres...

immediately i ask if its the same one as last time. he says he saw them on our cameras but he cant be sure. he tells me that before calling...

the footage shows this kid opening our closed, fenced gate, and coming to our front door. our dogs are barking at him in the yard. he attempts to open the...

THEN. he crawls in through our dog door… our dogs have the ability to go in and out of the house as they like since their fence is closed in....

anyways. he comes in, and opens the dog door to make sure the dogs can come in too. HE TAKES OFF HIS SHOES WHEN HE COMES IN… and then he...

after that, he turns on my tv, GOES INTO MY FRIDGE AND GRABS ICEPOPS, AND EATS AN ORANGE FROM OUR FRUIT BASKET…. huh?!?!??

he is in our house unsupervised for a total of about 15 minutes until the cops arrive and are able to get him out (he crawled out through the dog...

they ask w his parents are and where he lives, and he tells them as well. the cops tell him he is mot allowed to do this, that it is...

the cops talk to them for a bit and they all leave. my husband had left work to get home but by the time he got here everyone was gone....

my husband then went down to the neighbors and told the parents to take care of their kid. ( i was upset because he did wait for me to go...

the dad apologized and stated that the boy had been grounded and snuck out through his bedroom window. apparently he just likes to play with my dogs. the dad told...

a week later, my husband got a call from the parents, asking if by chance this kid was in our house again, because they could not find him. we were...

at this point ive calmed down quite a bit, but as soon as i remember i get quite mad. i think it is insanely upsetting that im more aware of...

he had to be unsupervised for at least thirty minutes in order to make his way to my house, ( about. a five minute walk), be here for 15 minutes...

he knows what he is doing, the parents are aware, but no one truly takes accountability for it. the little boy says he likes to play with my dogs, but...

i feel bad for calling the cops but. i truly feel like theres a need to report this because im scared for my safety and that of my animals and...

if he were to leave the gate open, my dogs would definitely run out into the main road and get run over. my house is not childproofed at all.

WE HAD A FLAMETHROWER ON THE KITCHEN TABLE THE DAY HE CAME IN (my husband had killed a spider outside with it).

i am concerned for this little boy’s safety but at the same time i do not want to be responsible or liable if anything were to happen to him out...

i also would like to feel safe in my own home. i dont feel like i should be having to keep my dogs in a kennel all day and close...

if he snuck out through his window im sure he could sneak in through one as well. theres so many what ifs in this situation and it might just be...

i guess this is more of a rant and i just hope this doesn’t happen again because i do intend to have the cops on speed dial, but again… am...

The story starts out sounding almost comical—a curious little boy wandering onto a farm to play with friendly dogs.

But the humor disappears quickly once the reality sets in: an unsupervised child repeatedly entering a stranger’s home creates serious safety risks for everyone involved.

The OP isn’t describing a one-time accident. The first incident could reasonably be viewed as an unfortunate lapse in supervision. Young children wander, and even attentive parents can lose sight of them briefly.

The second incident, however, paints a different picture.

The child intentionally opened the gate, attempted the locked front door, crawled through the dog door, removed his shoes, helped himself to food, turned on the television, and treated the house as though it were his own. That sequence suggests purposeful behavior rather than simple confusion.

From the parents’ perspective, they may genuinely be overwhelmed. Children who repeatedly run away from home, ignore instructions, or seek stimulation elsewhere can present enormous challenges.

The father’s description of the child sneaking out through a bedroom window and even spitting at him hints that there may be broader behavioral issues occurring at home.

That doesn’t necessarily excuse what happened, but it may explain why ordinary discipline hasn’t solved the problem.

The OP’s concerns, meanwhile, extend far beyond inconvenience. Living on rural property often means encountering hazards that would rarely exist in a suburban home.

Farm equipment, livestock, chemicals, electric fencing, ponds, tools, firearms, or—in this unusual case—a flamethrower left on a table all create environments that are potentially dangerous for an unsupervised child.

The fear isn’t simply that the child entered without permission; it’s that something tragic could happen within seconds.

Research consistently shows that inadequate supervision is a major contributor to childhood injuries.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that unintentional injuries remain one of the leading causes of death and serious harm among children, and that active adult supervision is one of the most effective preventive measures, particularly around environmental hazards.

The situation also illustrates an important concept in developmental psychology: children gradually develop executive functioning—the mental skills responsible for impulse control, planning, and risk assessment.

These abilities continue developing throughout childhood rather than appearing all at once.

The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University explains that young children naturally struggle to inhibit impulses and anticipate consequences, making consistent adult supervision essential rather than optional.

That developmental reality helps explain the child’s behavior without minimizing the seriousness of it.

A five- or six-year-old may understand how to reach a destination but still lack the judgment to appreciate why entering someone else’s home is dangerous.

Responsibility therefore falls primarily on the adults responsible for supervision, not on the child himself.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Alan Kazdin, director emeritus of the Yale Parenting Center, has emphasized that “Punishment tells a child what not to do, but it does not teach what to do instead.”

His work on child behavior highlights that preventing recurring unsafe behavior usually requires consistent supervision, environmental changes, and teaching alternative behaviors rather than relying on punishment alone.

Applying that principle here suggests that grounding alone is unlikely to solve the problem if the child continues finding opportunities to leave unsupervised.

The family may need stronger physical safeguards, closer monitoring, or even professional evaluation if this pattern continues.

Likewise, the OP is not unreasonable for strengthening security—locking doors, modifying the dog door, installing additional fencing or alarms, and contacting authorities whenever the child enters again. Those measures protect both the homeowners and the child.

Ultimately, the central issue isn’t whether the little boy likes playing with the dogs. It’s that an unsupervised child repeatedly entered a private home on rural property where countless hidden dangers exist.

Through the OP’s experience, the story becomes a reminder that compassion for a child and firm personal boundaries are not opposites.

Protecting one’s home while insisting that parents address an ongoing safety problem isn’t an overreaction—it’s an attempt to prevent an avoidable tragedy before curiosity turns into catastrophe.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors backed OP and argued that the responsibility rested squarely with the parents.

Impressive-Ball3716 − Ok, I love how people are telling you to spend a lot of money to upgrade YOUR security when this is the parents’ problems.

Whether he’s autistic or not, they are responsible for their kid. I was a teacher for about 10 years and I’ve dealt with autistic kids.

Yes, autistic kids have their deals, but that’s not an excuse for the parents to stop parenting. I’d be telling them that I’m really jumpy, and I can’t be held...

Call CPS, call the cops, and tell the parents that they need to upgrade THEIR security to keep him in.

And if you pay for new locks/dog door, etc, send them the bill.

SouthernSentence6476 − I don't think you're overreacting and I feel like most of the comments on here are talking more about the little boy and family and whatever made up...

Not one adult in that child life handled the situation properly, even the authorities.

I'm sure these are yt ppl cuz not one child of color would be able to break into someone's house, steal things, disturb property and just be described as "a...

Get the child a dog and some supervision. All of the other made up scenarios about how he might be on the spectrum is really just another dodge of accountability.

Them being o__rwhelmed, another accountability dodging accusation. You're not overreacting when even the authorities don't take you not being safe in the privacy of your own home seriously

Soggy-Basket-7154 − Umm. Did I miss something in OP's post that said the child was on the spectrum? If not, people need to stop speculating.

And even if he is, it is the parents' job to get this situation under control.

My 6 year old son has autism and I would NEVER allow a situation where I'm not actively aware of where he is 100% of the time.

I'm a single mother and work, plus I'm in school full time, and I have another child to care for as well. Still wouldn't allow this type of thing to...

People are also speculating that the parents must be o__rwhelmed. Would it be stressful for your child to be doing this? Sure.

But let's not assume they are o__rwhelmed and under-supported and lacking resources. It's quite possible they are just bad parents. There are PLENTY of them out there.

Plus, if they ARE unable to manage the situation for any legitimate reason, then the police probably would have come to that conclusion when speaking with the parents about how...

If the police didn't get that vibe, then it probably did not come off that way from the parents.

Still, in case it got missed and the parents do need resources for extenuating circumstances, but they are not seeking it on their own, then that's a problem for that...

Whether they are just bad/lazy/inattentive parents or DO actually need help, either way you are totally justified in calling CPS as your concern is for the child (and it's a...

Of course your concern is also for your safety, your dog's safety, your property, etc, and keeping the child from affecting others' safety is still a valid reason for calling...

I have dealt with CPS as my p__cho ex wanted to get back at me years ago and called them on me for much less than this.

Although nothing came of it bc there was nothing actually wrong with my household, I can tell you that CPS is super thorough in coming for a home visit, taking...

Please call them to protect everyone involved. People call them for a lot less and this is sooo justified.

These users warned OP not to underestimate the legal and personal risks.

I-just-want-t0-kn0w − Omg this is wild. NOR. If the parents won’t take action- it’s time to start adding more security to your home, potentially bring a lawyer into it to...

Make sure your fence cannot be climbed. There are also smart doggy doors where you put a tag on your dogs collars, and the door will only unlock for the...

You shouldn’t have to take these measures, but this is ridiculous. Edit: as others said. Call CPS, and honestly?

If you’re home for this kid breaking in, yell at him next time. I have no experience with children, but I remember a neighbor screaming expletives at me for going...

My mom called the cops on him.

I don’t remember what he said but it must have been pretty obscene for my mom to involve the police.

But anyways, if this kid isn’t developmentally stunted, as others wondered about, that should shake him to his core and keep him away. It’s not the kindest way to go...

Cute_Leader3735 − OMG. I WAS FLABBERGASTED just with the title and one pic. Got to the first pass of the initial story (ew and yikes), then the next (wth), and...

Sheesh! I'm just besides myself - can't imagine this (but why am I surprised with what can happen with kids these days). Just floored the kid acts like this is...

You have EVERY RIGHT to be concerned! If something happens to him on your property (HUGE PROBLEM) and if something happens to your pets/livestock home, or even you, also a...

But I have a terrible feeling only you will be stuck held accountable for anything that goes wrong 😭and it's not your fault! You live out in the country! For...

This should not be happening (obviously). I'm so sorry you are dealing with this.

My daughter is shopping for a home (just the way you describe yours) and I'm putting myself (us) in your shoes. I am grateful the cops are assisting when you...

These people are eventually going to get a CPS call, cops will probably report this "wandering".

Sad for the child. He must not like it at home but still this shouldn't be on you and your husband. Hoping you get some great advice and support here...

dontchewspagetti − Legally OP, your house is not an attractive nuisance. An attractive nuisance is a legal term which means someone is negligent in securing their property which can seem...

You won't be held liable for any attractive nuisance claims - homes aren't considered so (unless you have a pool which isnt fenced off).

However, you can be held liable if he hurts himself on your property. File a civil suit against thr child and parents to tresspass them. It's not a criminal tresspass...

The child won't go to jail or anything, but you can start gaining punitive damages from the parents. You're under reacting because if that child is in your home and...

These commentors encouraged OP to contact Child Protective Services (CPS), saying the repeated incidents raised legitimate concerns about neglect and the child’s safety.

BlatantConservative − OP one part of this stuck out to me, was the kid totally nonverbal at 4 or 5? And he didn't respond to an adult at all?

And at 5 and 6 he's only able to do simple "this is my name and my parents live there" stuff? And he's never been taught to not enter random...

4-5 is an incredibly late time to be nonverbal, like that's usually when the autism diagnosis happens.

But with the context of this story, it sounds like the parents never supervise or interact with the kid all that much so like he genuinely might not be learning...

You're not overreacting calling CPS for basic personal property and personal privacy reasons. But also CPS might do a proper investigation and save this kid.

This kind of thing is the majority of CPS cases, the parents not properly interacting and neglecting kids, but also from someone I know who worked with CPS, this is...

In most cases like this the kid isn't removed from the house, but the government still makes sure the kid is alright. I actually think you have a moral imperative...

BakedNemo420 − You are not overreacting, a child that small should not be able to get that far, and you could literally be anyone.

This is a HUGE safety issue for the child, and it is VERY strange how comfortable the child is with it and REALLY shows an amount of neglectful parenting that...

Sure, the cop was right that the child wasn't a danger, but the child is being repeatedly allowed to put themselves in danger.

Like someone else said, report to CPS, they dont always do their job well, but if people dont report incidents like these, they dont even have the chance.

MaroonedLiz22 − This is insane. Your home is supposed to be your sanctuary and it can’t be if you’re always anxious some strange child is gonna break in 😩

This story struck a nerve because it isn’t just about an adventurous kid—it’s about boundaries, safety, and parental responsibility.

Most readers sympathized with the homeowner, arguing that repeatedly finding an unsupervised child inside your home is a serious liability, not an innocent inconvenience.

Others felt sorry for the little boy, who may simply be craving attention and doesn’t understand the risks. What do you think? Was the OP right to involve the police, or should they have handled it differently? Share your thoughts in the comments!
