After a Miscarriage, Her Mother-in-Law Said “It’s Not My Job to Console You.” Four Months Later, She Finally Walked Away.

Grief has a way of revealing who truly shows up when life falls apart.

For one woman, the loss of a pregnancy didn’t just bring heartbreak. It exposed painful cracks in her relationship with her in-laws, people she had considered family for years.

While she and her husband struggled through the emotional aftermath of a miscarriage, the support she expected never came. Instead, she received cold messages, emotional distance, and words she says she’ll never forget.

When she finally confronted her in-laws about their behavior, her mother-in-law’s response was blunt and devastating.

“You’re not my daughter. It’s not my job to console you.”

Months later, after failed attempts to repair the relationship and an explosive confrontation initiated by her father-in-law, she decided she had reached her limit.

The decision sparked debate among relatives, but many people online believed she had every right to walk away.

Here’s what happened.

After a Miscarriage, Her Mother-in-Law Said “It’s Not My Job to Console You.” Four Months Later, She Finally Walked Away.
Not the actual photo

'AITAH for cutting off my in-laws after my MIL said "it's not my job to console you" post-miscarriage, and my FIL called me "insecure"?'

My husband and I had a miscarriage a few months ago. Right after our loss,

my in-laws sent some crude messages and then completely distanced themselves.

When I confronted them about the texts, they told me I was overreacting and

my MIL literally said: "You're not my daughter, it's not my job to console you."

Flash forward through 4 months of silence. Right now, they see our 2 kids once a

week for daycare (they have begged for this and my FIL almost had a stroke when

we tried to stop this arrangement - note we can afford daycare and this is an

arrangement they have asked for), but have almost zero relationship with us.

However, my FIL has been pushing hard because he wants things to "go back to

normal", meaning he wants us doing family dinners, coffee dates, and outings again

as a big happy family. My view is that I don't need to have a relationship with them as they said themselves, I'm "not their daughter".

Last night, my FIL forced his way over to our house to demand this "reset." Instead of offering a real apology, he:

\- Gave a sarcastic non-apology: "Apparently you're demanding an apology, so here

you go, if we hurt your feelings, we're sorry about how it made you feel." I'm not

demanding an apology, but my husband is for the way they have treated me.

\- Called us "ungrateful" for past financial help. This was early inheritance they

offered to all their kids (and specifically written up in an agreement as their son's

share, i.e. if anything were to happen between us, I have no rights to the money,

which is fine,  I'm self sufficient and my husband and I are independently financially secure through our jobs).

\- Looked me in the eye and said, "I know you have deep anxieties and insecurities."

He was suggesting that the issue at hand is my issue and my choice - he cannot take accountability.

We are currently trying to conceive again, and I refuse to let this toxic dynamic touch

my life and my mental health. I've booked an appointment with a psychologist, and I

am completely stepping back. I will not host them, go to family dinners with them,

or pretend everything is fine just so they get the perks of a happy family.

Some extended family members think I should "just move on for the sake of peace" and stop keeping a grudge.

AITAH for completely cutting off my personal relationship with them? My husband

has stepped up and supported me, and it's bothering them as their relationship with their own son is now severed.

Edit: They were supposed to look after the kids tomorrow. My husband called them

and told them we were making alternative arrangements indefinitely, particularly

after yesterday's lecture. I feel a great sense of relief. I've called daycare and arranged the extra day.

A Family Rift Born From Grief

The conflict began shortly after the woman suffered a miscarriage.

During one of the most vulnerable periods of her life, she says her in-laws sent insensitive messages and then largely disappeared from her life altogether. Looking for understanding, she eventually confronted them about the hurt they had caused.

Rather than acknowledging her pain, her mother-in-law dismissed it.

According to the woman, her mother-in-law told her that comforting her wasn’t her responsibility because she wasn’t her daughter.

The statement fundamentally changed how she viewed the relationship.

If she wasn’t considered family when she was grieving the loss of a child, she reasoned, why should she continue pretending everything was normal?

Over the following four months, contact became minimal. The grandparents still watched the couple’s two children once a week, an arrangement they had repeatedly requested despite the parents being financially able to use daycare services.

Yet outside of childcare, there was almost no meaningful relationship.

That wasn’t good enough for the woman’s father-in-law.

He wanted things to return to the way they were before.

Family dinners. Coffee outings. Shared gatherings. The image of a happy, united family.

The problem was that nobody had actually addressed the hurt that caused the separation in the first place.

The “Apology” That Made Things Worse

The situation finally boiled over when the father-in-law arrived at their home demanding a reset.

Instead of offering genuine accountability, he delivered what many would recognize as a classic non-apology.

Apparently you’re demanding an apology, so here you go. If we hurt your feelings, we’re sorry about how it made you feel.

For the woman and her husband, it wasn’t an apology at all. It was a way of shifting responsibility back onto the person who had been hurt.

The conversation only deteriorated from there.

The father-in-law accused the couple of being ungrateful for financial assistance provided years earlier, despite the fact that the money had been offered to all of his children as part of an inheritance arrangement.

Then came a comment that struck particularly deep.

Looking directly at her, he told her that he knew she had “deep anxieties and insecurities.”

To her, it felt like another attempt to frame the conflict as a problem inside her head rather than a consequence of their actions.

At that moment, something clicked.

The issue was no longer about obtaining an apology.

It was about protecting her peace.

Especially because she and her husband were actively trying to conceive again.

After months of stress, grief, and emotional conflict, she booked an appointment with a psychologist and decided to step away completely.

No more hosting. No more family dinners. No more pretending everything was fine for the comfort of people unwilling to acknowledge the damage they had caused.

Why Validation Matters During Grief

Mental health experts frequently emphasize that grief is not something people simply “get over.” Supportive relationships play a critical role in emotional recovery.

According to psychologist Dr. Pauline Boss, a leading expert on loss and family relationships, healing often depends less on finding solutions and more on feeling understood and validated by the people around us.

When grief is minimized or dismissed, emotional wounds can deepen and become more difficult to process.

Similarly, experts at Verywell Mind explain that emotional validation helps people feel seen, heard, and accepted during painful experiences.

Invalidating responses, even when unintended, can intensify feelings of isolation and distress during periods of grief and trauma.

This perspective helps explain why the conflict continued to grow.

The woman wasn’t demanding perfection. She wasn’t asking anyone to erase her loss.

What she seemed to need was simple acknowledgment that her pain mattered.

Instead, she repeatedly encountered defensiveness, blame, and emotional distance.

Under those circumstances, creating boundaries wasn’t necessarily an act of punishment. It was an act of self-preservation.

Reddit Had Plenty to Say About This One:

Many commenters were shocked that the grandparents still had regular access to the children despite showing so little respect toward their mother.

misstiff1971 − Stop giving these people access to your children. They suck.

JustAsICanBeSoCruel − I think you are very silly if you think you kids are not going to

pick up bad habits from them while they watch them. People like that don't switch

off for kids. Kids are like sponges, and given how much they seem to dislike you,

three is no way they dont say s__t around the kid.

I would not let my kids anywhere near them. IDGAF if he has a stroke. Anyone that

thinks you should move on would be dead to me as well. Life is stressful enough

without having to feel like s__t by the people that should be supporting you.

dayzdnconfuzed68 − NTA at all. You don't deserve anything either of them have said

to you. Extend family does not get to dictate how you move on. Take care of

yourself and keep both of them far away from you and your family.

Others warned that children often absorb the attitudes and behaviors of adults around them, especially family members with significant influence.

kentdrive − These people are pricks. I’m surprised you give them your children at all,

when you can easily afford not to. Personally, if you really want to remove them

from your lives, then I would go whole h__: no babysitting. Obviously NTA.

Ok_Homework_7621 − Why is somebody malicious and manipulative allowed

unsupervised access to your children? They're not safe for you, but they're okay for kids? Your job is to protect them first.

bulletPoint − You are in almost the exact position my wife and I are in. Some

differences, but overall same behavior. We gave my parents a year to “make nice”

and even let them see the kids, despite their harsh words. An entire year. They gave

a half assed apology after things came to a head and now have zero access to the kids.

I hate that these are my parents. I’m embarrassed of them. And I’m ashamed my wife

has to go through this with them. I don’t have advice, we are navigating this all in

real time as well. I just wanted to commiserate. You are NTA.

Several readers also praised the husband for supporting his wife and standing up to his parents, noting that marital unity is often essential when dealing with toxic family dynamics.

Anarsenalofgoblins − NTA but YWBTAH if you continue to let their toxic

personalities influence your children and spending ANY time with them will do that.

They will teach your children ugliness and by allowing your kids to spend time with

them and see that, you are inadvertently okaying that behavior and teaching your

children that treating others this way is acceptable.

Your husband needs to run hardcore interference and put them in their place. You

should be focusing on lighthearted happiness and your health.

Individual-Paint7897 − Instead of trying to work it out, your FIL seems to be

escalating things. Your MIL is a pig & so is your FIL for enabling her. Stop sending

your children there for daycare. It just gives your MiL more opportunities to fill their

heads with negative comments about you, & it won’t be long before your children start disrespecting you.

If your husband wants to bring them along when he visits, at least he will be able to monitor the conversations.

grumpy__g − Everyone who expects you to keep the peace is a person who I would block. NTA

SafeWord9999 − Your husband better have shut down that lame ass apology. And

WHY THE F are the kids still visiting them. You’re rewarding the grandparents for

bad behaviour. Now they don’t have to see you at all and can just see the grandkids.

Families often talk about loyalty, but true loyalty usually reveals itself during life’s hardest moments.

A miscarriage is not simply a medical event. For many people, it is a profound emotional loss that reshapes relationships, expectations, and trust.

In this case, the conflict wasn’t created by grief alone. It was created by how people responded to grief.

Sometimes reconciliation begins with accountability. Sometimes it doesn’t happen at all.

And sometimes protecting your mental health means accepting that being related to someone does not automatically entitle them to a place in your life.

What do you think? Should family bonds survive hurtful words spoken during difficult times, or are there moments when walking away is the healthiest choice?
