After Years of Supporting His Estranged Father, One Son Finally Walked Away

Many people grow up believing that family loyalty should last a lifetime. Parents are often viewed as people we should respect no matter what, even when relationships are strained. But what happens when a lifetime of emotional and physical abuse collides with expectations of financial support in old age?

One man recently found himself facing that painful question after years of helping pay for his elderly father’s care despite having almost no relationship with him. He hoped keeping his distance while quietly contributing to his father’s living expenses would preserve a fragile peace.

Instead, one meeting shattered that arrangement forever.

What followed wasn’t simply a family argument. It became the breaking point after decades of unresolved pain.

'AITAH for telling my father what I really think and going no contact?'

I come from a family of nine kids with 7 girls and two boys; I'm the exact middle child. I've never had a good relationhship with my parents.

My Mom and my sisters are devout JW and I'm an athiest. My Dad is a violent narcacist who thought it was "kind" for me to have to pick out...

Fast forward to modern day and my parents are divorced. My Mom is still devout and routinely tells me how i offend God so i avoid her.

My father is in his mid 80's and I came to an agreement with the family that I'd pay about a little over a third of the money for him...

The deal being he didn't try to reach out to me at all. He's broke due to multiple bad life choices, and lives off what we give him and state...

When i was back home recently he bullied my brother into talking me into coming over to see him and bringing my wife. He said he wanted to talk and...

I arrive and he immediately tells me I need to give him more money.

He told me to take a second mortgage on my home since he knew how to make money off my money but I was to stupid to.

He also told me he'd personally call my boss and tell them how horrible I am as a person if I didn't do what he wanted.

And as a capper he tried to be physically indimidating by standing way to close as he yelled. He's 5'10" and 85, I'm 6'3" and only 55, the days of...

I don't totally remember exactly what I did, all I remember was trying to restrain myself from choking the life out of him. According to my wife I advanced on...

I then told him that the only reason he has a home and food to eat is me.

That I gladly see the majority of his living expenses come out of my paycheck every month. Why?

Because I know on a whim I could stop it at any time and he would not only starve but be homeless. So take what I give and shut your...

In the aftermath neither my brother or my wife talked to me for the full ride home. Much later my wife said she had never thought of me as violent,...

After that I've told my entire family that I am now strictly incommunicado with both our parents.

If they need something they can ask my brother and he can email me. From their side they're all angry that I "terrorized an old man" and I should do...

They think I should apologize and give him at least a little more money as a peace gesture. I've said no and am now considering blocking all of them besides...

EDIT: For those of you wondering why I pay a third in a family of nine kids. Seven of my sisters are basically just JW full time.

Only my brother and I have any sort of real career or make any spare money we can donate. Why I keep doing it is, as noted... complicated.

2nd EDIT: Uhm. Well. This appears to all be moot. I got an email saying my Father wants me cut out of his life for being "violent".

I replied fine, cut off the auto-depsoit, blocked his and his living facilities numbers, and informed everyone I'm done.

In the past hour i've gotten 47 calls from various numbers and I put my phone in a drawer. I feel kinda dizzy like I need to puke and... holy...

A Relationship Built on Fear

The son described growing up in a household where fear was more common than affection.

As an adult, he had chosen to keep contact with both parents to an absolute minimum. Although the emotional wounds remained, he still agreed to help pay for his father’s care after the elderly man could no longer support himself financially.

His reasoning wasn’t based on forgiveness.

It was based on compassion mixed with distance.

The arrangement worked as long as both sides respected one condition.

There would be very little direct contact.

When an Attempt at Reconciliation Fell Apart

Eventually, relatives encouraged the son to meet his father in hopes of repairing their relationship.

He arrived expecting an honest conversation.

Instead, the discussion quickly became demands for more financial support.

According to the son, the meeting escalated into insults, intimidation, and threats intended to pressure him into providing even more money.

Years of suppressed emotion surfaced all at once.

Although he never physically harmed his father, he admitted losing control emotionally, confronting him with decades of resentment before walking away.

The moment deeply unsettled his wife, who had never seen him react with that level of anger before.

For the son, however, the confrontation represented something very different.

It wasn’t about revenge.

It was the realization that no amount of financial help would ever transform an abusive relationship into a healthy one.

Why Ending Contact Can Sometimes Be Healthy

Estrangement between parents and adult children is one of the most emotionally complicated family decisions a person can make. While many people hope reconciliation is always possible, mental health professionals note that maintaining contact isn’t automatically the healthiest choice in every circumstance.

According to Psychology Today, healthy boundaries sometimes require limiting or ending contact with people whose repeated behavior remains manipulative, abusive, or harmful. Forgiveness and reconciliation are separate concepts. Someone may choose to let go of anger internally while still deciding that ongoing contact is unsafe for their emotional well-being.

Experts also emphasize that caregiving should not come at the expense of one’s own mental health. Adult children often experience intense guilt when stepping away from toxic family relationships, particularly when aging parents require financial or physical support.

Recognizing those feelings while maintaining appropriate boundaries can be an important part of healing.

See what others had to share with OP:

Many felt that continuing to provide financial assistance despite a history of mistreatment already reflected considerable generosity.

Time_Cranberry_113 − They are abusive and manipulative. You are not the AH for protecting yourself. Get away from them and let them enjoy their consequences.

Zealousideal-Sea-699 − The Bible also says to not provoke children. Nta and honestly you giving them money in the first place was a mistake.

Block them and if they harass you pursue legal action. You are not required to fund any money unless paying a debt, court order or other such as child support,...

Renbelle − Did you lose your cool? Yes. But do they deserve any more of your money or energy? Absolutely not! If there are 9 if you, you should be...

Others acknowledged that losing his temper during the confrontation was unfortunate but understandable given the emotional history involved.

PurpleEmotional1401 − NTA, and stop sending money for the vile old narcissist's care. He thoroughly deserves a miserable old age.

Roi57 − I would checkout state facilities, and send the information to your brother, say I’m done giving money to an absolute tyrant.

Let your father see what life is really like without your contribution. I know he’s your father, but I’d have cut that tie a long time ago.

Whyamiwritingthis_7 − Nta You still support him financially eventhough he was violent And instead of feeling remorse for his actions, he has the audacity to ask for more money?

You maybe could've handled yout temper a bit better in the moment. But your dad is clearly the ah "They think I should apologize and give him at least a...

" Absolutely not

oop_norf −   Am I over-reacting?   No, not really. Aside from this having been a long time coming for all the crap they've put you through in the past,

this response was warranted for just this one incident alone. Exploiting your willingness to mend fences to try to threaten, insult and extort you was completely unacceptable.

Honestly, I'm not sure there's any point in you paying for anything or communicating at all at this point -

they've all made it perfectly clear that they're going to treat you badly if you help and treat you badly if you don't, so what's the point?

You might as well use your time and money on something worthwhile.

Several noted that while aggressive behavior should always be avoided, sustained abuse can eventually overwhelm even people who have spent years trying to remain calm.

pinkelephant_bubbles − NTA. At all. Reframing this for your wife: you practiced a high level of restraint given the circumstances.

Individual_You_6586 − NTA, and for pity’s sake stop coddling this old abuser.

He doesn’t deserve special treatment just because he accidentally lived longer than he should have. An old arsehole is still an arsehole.

And by the way you pay « a little over a third of the money for him to stay in a nicer elder care facility».

- why don’t you pay just 1/9? Or stop paying altogether, let him go to a charity. Edit to add: have you told your wife how you got beaten as...

Dogmother123 − He is lucky you aren't honouring him with a street corner. NTAH.

Family relationships are rarely simple.

Most people hope difficult bonds can eventually be repaired through patience, understanding, and time.

But reconciliation requires willingness from both sides.

When one person repeatedly uses fear, manipulation, or intimidation, stepping away may become an act of self-preservation rather than cruelty.

Sometimes the healthiest boundary isn’t another conversation.

It’s accepting that peace begins where the cycle finally ends.

What do you think? Do adult children have an obligation to continue supporting abusive parents in old age, or is it reasonable to step away once healthy boundaries have repeatedly been ignored?
