Birthday Girl Changes Dinner to a Pricey Restaurant, Then Calls Her Friend Unsupportive for Staying Home

Birthday dinners should feel celebratory, not like an unexpected financial test.

When plans have been settled for weeks, guests naturally budget around the chosen restaurant.

Changing everything only hours beforehand can leave people choosing between overspending and disappointing someone they care about.

One woman faced that dilemma when her friend Emma moved her 30th birthday dinner from an affordable Italian restaurant to a much fancier venue.

The new menu included main dishes costing around £45, which was far beyond what the poster had planned to spend while saving for a house.

She privately asked Emma to reconsider, but the birthday girl insisted she deserved a classy evening and expected her friend to make it work.

Instead, the poster declined and sent a gift.

Read on to see why that decision caused tension across the entire friend group.

Friend skips her birthday dinner after a last-minute switch to an expensive restaurant she can’t afford

'AITA for leaving my friend’s birthday dinner after she changed the restaurant last minute?'

So my friend Emma turned 30 last weekend, and she’d been planning this

birthday dinner for months. She sent out the invite weeks ago for a casual

dinner at this cute little Italian place we all love. It’s affordable, cozy, and

everyone was excited.

On the day of the dinner, literally three hours before we were supposed to

meet, she texted the group saying she’d changed the location to a fancier

spot because her new boyfriend suggested it. I looked up the menu and

almost everything was ridiculously expensive like £45 for a main dish. I’m

saving for a house and really didn’t budget for a pricey night out, especially

since we’d already agreed on the original plan.

I messaged her privately saying I couldn’t afford the new place and asked if

she’d reconsider, but she said she deserved a classy evening and that I

should just make it work for one night. I felt uncomfortable, so I told her I’d

sit this one out and sent her a gift instead.

Now she’s barely speaking to me and mutual friends are saying I made her

feel unsupported on her big night. I honestly feel bad, but I also think she

blindsided everyone by changing plans last minute. AITA?

Friendship should not require someone to prove their loyalty by ignoring their financial limits.

A celebration can matter deeply without becoming a test of who is willing to spend beyond their means.

The OP was not rejecting Emma’s birthday. She was reacting to a major last-minute change in the agreement.

For weeks, the group expected an affordable dinner at a familiar restaurant.

Three hours before the event, Emma replaced that plan with a venue where a main course cost around £45, then told the OP to “make it work.”

That response transformed a practical budget concern into an emotional judgment.

The OP was left feeling that protecting her house savings meant failing as a friend, even though she communicated privately, declined politely, and still sent a gift.

A different perspective is that Emma may have viewed turning 30 as a symbolic milestone.

Her new boyfriend’s suggestion perhaps made the more luxurious restaurant feel like a statement about entering a new chapter.

In that emotional state, she may have interpreted attendance as proof of support.

Yet birthdays do not suspend other people’s responsibilities.

Once she changed the financial terms without meaningful notice, she also had to accept that some guests might no longer participate.

Licensed clinical professional counselor Joyce Marter similarly argues that setting financial limits can preserve a relationship by preventing resentment.

She advises people to say no when an expense feels uncomfortable and emphasizes that another person’s disappointment does not make the boundary inappropriate.

That insight fits this situation closely.

Had the OP attended reluctantly, she might have spent the evening anxious about prices and resentful that months of planning had been discarded for a boyfriend’s suggestion.

Declining protected both her budget and the evening’s atmosphere.

Emma was entitled to choose a more glamorous celebration, but she was not entitled to demand that every guest absorb the cost.

The most useful next step is for the OP to avoid apologizing for being unable to afford the new venue.

She can acknowledge that Emma felt disappointed while calmly restating that the original plan was manageable and the replacement was not.

A friendship strong enough to celebrate a milestone should also be strong enough to survive one honest financial boundary.

The larger question is not whether the OP supported Emma, but whether Emma believes support must always be purchased.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Reddit users agreed you are NTA for declining the birthday dinner due to cost

Wise_Entertainer_970 − NTA. What she did was very rude and inconsiderate. Why didn’t

her bf take her out to that restaurant as a 1:1 date?

Green_Web5022 − Nta. She as a friend should’ve understood immediately when you said

you couldn’t afford it. I’m not the richest of my friends and they all understand that I can’t

make every event or occasion due to a tight budget. So don’t feel bad, just keep her where

she’s at and have peace of mind that you tried.

Huge-Personality-737 − NTA! You explained you couldn't afford to go out and sent a gift.

What you did was being an adult and choosing fiscal responsibility is nothing to be ashamed of.

EPofEP − NTA - this is one of those posts where the more you read the more you hope it's

fake even though it's an entirely plausible situation. These people aren't friends, friends

are understanding, these people are selfish.

Decent_Wallaby4432 − Her big night? Please. Rude rude rude to bait and switch with the plans.

Less_Instruction_345 − NTA. She is incredibly rude and selfish. The fact she is sulking says it

all. Petulant and childish behavior. Don't bother reaching out and certainly don't apologize

as you have done absolutely nothing wrong. She owes you the apology. I wouldn't consider her a friend.

Outside_Holiday_9997 − Unsupported on her big night? Its a BIRTHDAY. We all have one.

You are NTA. She is - she changed plans last minute so she doesnt get to be upset it was no

longer in someone's budget. Turn it around on her and throw a fit about how you think she

did it on purpose to embarrass you.

I dont see her offering to cover the difference. ..

This group emphasized that the birthday guest was being selfish and unreasonable

chantillylace9 − NTA, I absolutely hate this, if somebody picks a super expensive birthday

dinner or wants to have a destination wedding in Bora Bora or something absurd, they

have to completely expect that lots and lots of people aren’t going to show.

It’s incredible what people expect for events nowadays, I really miss the small birthday

parties where you play piñata and pin the tail in the donkey and have birthday cake cakes

and the very most have a bouncy house if you were super fancy.

Now there are sip and seas and gender reveals and all sorts of showers and weddings have

just become insane with 4 to 5 or more events expected .

nearing60andhappy − NTA- Wait a month. When new BF dumps her, she'll be back.

texasgambler58 − NTA. Her big night? What is she, like 12 years old?

TKDmamabear − I bet you’re not the only one who wasn’t happy about the restaurant change. NTA

These commenters noted the guest tried to force others into spending beyond their means

CocoaAlmondsRock − Unsupported? Why TF does she need support at her birthday dinner?

She changed the venue. You politely declined, explaining why. She was an ungracious

b__ch about it. You are NTA. You should NOT have sacrificed financially because she

"deserves a classy evening. " I hope she had a wonderful birthday.

.. but that doesn't mean she gets to order other people to spend money they don't have so

they can worship at her feet. Don't you DARE apologize to her. Stay firm. If other people

have a problem with it, consider what that says about their character.

KaposiaDarcy − NTA. People need to stop thinking that the world revolves around their

event (birthday, wedding, etc) and that others are required to go in to debt for them. A

real friend wouldn’t want you to spend what you can’t afford.

Neo1881 − NTA, sounds like she did a bait and switch on all her friends. You made your

choice and decided not to go. That was assertive behavior as she still has the choice to go.

She told you that you had no choice but to go where she wanted to and that's aggressive behavior.

It’s tricky when social obligations collide with financial and personal boundaries.

While some friends sympathized with Emma, others recognized the challenges her last-minute changes created.

How would you balance wanting to celebrate a loved one while also staying true to your own limits? Could a different approach have prevented hurt feelings, or was sitting this one out the fairest option?

Share your perspectives below, would you have gone, or politely opted out like the OP?
