Summary:
- While recent video game adaptations have improved, early reactions to Eli Roth’s Borderlands film call it a “terrible” and “unfunny” mess.
- The film’s success remains uncertain until its release on August 9, 2024.
Despite the usual flaws and inconsistencies that can frustrate any die-hard fan, recent adaptations of The Last of Us, Super Mario Bros., and Fallout have notably raised the bar for video game adaptations.
These films have shown significant improvement over previous attempts to bring beloved game franchises to the big screen, creating a new expectation that filmmakers have finally mastered the art of proper adaptations.
However, this streak of successful adaptations might come to an abrupt end with the release of Eli Roth’s Borderlands. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, the film is poised to become one of 2024’s biggest flops.
In a recent Patreon post, Richtman shared insights from viewers who attended a preliminary screening. These viewers described the Borderlands movie as a “terrible” and “unfunny” mess, citing a chaotic plot, awful jokes, and underdeveloped characters.
Coupled with prior negative feedback about the film’s questionable casting choices, it seems we’re headed for a disaster on August 9, 2024.
While it’s easy to criticize video game adaptations and lambast filmmakers for straying from the original concepts, it’s important to remember that chaos, weirdness, and a touch of cringe have always been integral to the Borderlands games.
Until the movie is officially released, the negative feedback could be seen as the adaptation staying true to the original.
“TERRIBLE” and “UNFUNNY”! 😱 The upcoming Borderlands movie is getting crucified in early reactions!

The decision to cast actors in their 40s, 50s, and 60s to play much younger characters is certainly questionable, but we won’t know for sure whether Borderlands will be a success or failure until more reviews come in or the film itself is released.
Either way, Borderlands is sure to make its audience laugh, either with it or at it.
Mark your calendars for August 9, 2024, and get ready to experience the mayhem and madness of Pandora on the big screen.
