Boyfriend Grows Alarmed After Girlfriend Repeatedly Says She Will Not Reach Her Twenties

Sometimes the biggest warning signs are not dramatic statements but small changes in someone’s behavior. When a person starts acting as if time is running out, the people closest to them may notice something feels wrong before they understand why.

The original poster (OP), a 19-year-old man, has known his girlfriend since childhood and they have been together since their teenage years. Recently, he noticed major changes in her behavior. She has become determined to make every moment count, planning trips, chasing experiences, and repeatedly saying they do not have much time left.

She has also shared posts suggesting she may not make it out of her teens and has been sleeping very little because she wants to “get the most” out of life. Although she dismisses concerns as jokes, OP is worried there may be something deeper happening and is asking whether he should take these signs seriously.

The individual comments might have sounded ambiguous, but together they formed a pattern that should not be dismissed as dark humor

'is this normal for my gf?'

i wanna be quick im kinda scared.

i have been friends with my girlfriend since we were 3 and started dating at 13 (starting hs) we are now 19.

she has been struggling lately and she wanted to spend so much time with me this year.

we went on holiday and travelled to 3 different countries.

she begged me to watch the sunset at the beach and do crazy things we didnt want to do.

she always says we dont have much time left i always asked her what she meant and never really answered seriously.

she reposted on tiktok about not making it out her teens and i asked her about it.

she just 'joked' and said she will die a teenager. do i take this seriously?

she barely sleeps bc she says she needs to get the most out of this year, and now im adding things she went all out last christmas.

she hasnt really openly said anything though

Sometimes the most frightening signs are not dramatic announcements, but small changes that leave someone close to us feeling uneasy. When a person we love starts talking differently about the future, acting unusually urgent, or seeming determined to create “final” memories, it can create a feeling that something is wrong even when they insist everything is fine.

In this situation, the OP is not simply wondering whether his girlfriend is being sentimental. He is trying to understand whether a pattern of concerning behavior should be taken seriously.

The emotional complexity of this story comes from the history between them. The OP and his girlfriend have grown up together, shared years of friendship, and built a relationship during some of their most formative moments.

Because of that closeness, he notices changes that others might miss. Her desire to travel, spend more time together, and create meaningful memories could be interpreted as normal young love or a response to a difficult period.

However, repeated comments about not having much time left, saying she may not make it out of her teens, sleeping less to “experience everything,” and suddenly going all out with gifts create a pattern that deserves attention. The concern is not any single action, but the combination of them.

A different perspective is that people experiencing intense emotional struggles sometimes communicate pain indirectly. They may avoid directly saying they are thinking about death because they feel afraid, ashamed, or worried about how others will react.

Instead, their feelings may appear through jokes, unusual goodbyes, sudden urgency, or attempts to create memories. At the same time, it is important not to assume exactly what she is thinking. The healthiest response is not to label her behavior, but to treat her words as meaningful and check whether she feels safe.

Psychologist Thomas Joiner, known for his research on suicide risk and the interpersonal theory of suicide, has explained that feelings of hopelessness, disconnection, and believing that one’s future is limited can be important warning signs when combined with other risk factors.

His research emphasizes the importance of paying attention to changes in behavior and having direct, compassionate conversations rather than avoiding difficult topics.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s concern is reasonable. Asking her directly about what she means does not “put the idea in her head” or make things worse.

When someone is making comments about not being around in the future, gentle honesty can create an opportunity for them to share what they are hiding. Her behavior may have another explanation, but the possible risk is too serious to ignore.

The most important thing is that she does not have to carry whatever she is facing alone. The OP can let her know that her comments have stayed with him, that he cares about her, and that he wants to understand what is happening rather than judge her.

A person’s willingness to create memories is beautiful, but when those memories start feeling like preparation for an ending, they deserve compassion, attention, and support.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters believed something serious might be happening and encouraged having an honest conversation with her instead of ignoring the sudden changes

CriticismMission2245 − Something is wrong 100%. Speak to her, she needs to open up to you.

FalconSpecial6149 − Is she struggling with mental health issues? Is she depressed?

These users expressed concern that the behavior could be connected to suicidal thoughts and urged taking the situation seriously

WiseNicolias − She’s most likely planning on committing, you need to talk to her

certifiedtraggot − she's 100% got a date or month that she's planning as a 'deadline', i speak from experience

notesunderyourdoor − take this seriously.

she’s struggling and trying to do as much as she can to be remembered for if she decides to do it if she hasn’t already

These commenters suggested possible depression or a major emotional struggle, noting that unusual bursts of activity can sometimes appear alongside mental health difficulties

AirRickaaaa − is it possible that she's extremely depressed or that she was diagnosed?

i hate saying it, but it doesn't seem like depression with the sudden burst of energy and wanting to experience anything.

everyones depression is different, but it unfortunately comes off more as a recently discovered diagnosis. talk to her.

explain how you're feeling and how its hurting you knowing that she isn't being truthful and sharing whats happening.

i wish you the best of luck and hope everything turns out okay.

doggiewave − I had a similar situation on my 20s , for almost a year I was looking at the people and thinking,

how lucky they are to have time and live, travel… help her, she needs to talk with a therapist and you should go with her.

This commenter mentioned that sudden changes could also have physical causes and recommended talking with her to understand what is really happening

fnafexoticbutters83 − First thought was cancer But maybe depression Def talk to her tho best of luck to yall

These users raised the possibility of a bipolar episode or manic symptoms, especially because of changes in sleep, energy, and behavior

Ill_Relationship_904 − I am not a psychologist so I only know so much. I do have a lot of family that struggle with mental health.

It sounds like she may be having a bipolar episode.

Sometimes people with bipolar can have mixed episodes where they have some symptoms of depression and some symptoms of mania.

pimpinaintez18 − Lack of sleep is one of the biggest indicators of psychosis.

A kid that age can easily do one night without sleep if they sleep the next day .

If it’s multiple days I’d be worried that she may be having a manic episode from undiagnosed bipolar.

If she says she is not suicidal, what else is making her treat the year like a farewell? Who can help the boyfriend ensure that he is not facing this alone?
