Daughter Leaves Parents In ER After Years Of Caregiving And Finally Chooses Herself

A daughter reached her breaking point after stepping in as a caregiver for her aging parents and realizing she could no longer carry the responsibility alone.

This Redditor explains that she moved in with her elderly parents after both became sick, hoping to support them during a difficult time. When her father fell and suffered a serious bleeding injury due to his blood thinners, she rushed to help, called emergency services, and followed him to the hospital.

However, a confrontation about his drinking turned into a major argument, leaving her overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted. She decided to step away from being their primary caregiver while still arranging professional support, realizing that loving her parents did not mean sacrificing herself completely.

'Walked out on my parents in the ER'

It happened last Sunday when my dad fell. He's 86, Mom is 80. Both had gotten ill, so I moved in to help on Mothers Day.

I had just pulled in the driveway from grocery shopping as my mom called to say dad had fallen in the hallway. I threw the car in park and ran...

The hallway was covered in bloody handprints and pools of blood.

Dad has been on blood thinners for 30 years and his skin has become so thin that any kind of friction will tear his skin.

He had already tried crawling but had hit his knee when falling, I couldn't lift him.

My mom stood there asking if she should call 911 or my son to come help him up.

Even if my son had helped me get him up, we couldn't have stopped the bleeding.

Called 911, he went by ambulance. I followed with my mom, I never called my son because it was horrific.

When they let us back to see him, he wanted to make jokes. I tried to talk to him about his drinking... he came unglued. Huge fight, I left them...

Packed my stuff and dropped my mom her car at the hospital.

I'm done. In the time I have been with them trying to help, I discovered they don't like each other. At all.

56 years they have been married. I'm the youngest of 5, the only one who wasn't disowned at some point..

Now I see them and while I will always love my mom and dad... I dont like them.

Ive called home health and senior services for assistance. I cant leave them without any help, it just wont be mine directly.. I'm choosing me.

This is hard. So much harder than I expected. ❤️

Thank you all for your words of support!! I thought being away would be easier but I find myself still holding my breath, waiting for a call.

I've called home health, senior services, and his doctor to alert them of his changes. Hoping to get them somewhere safe as soon as possible.

Sometimes the hardest thing a person can do is admit that love and responsibility are not the same as unlimited sacrifice. Many caregivers reach a point where they are physically present but emotionally exhausted, carrying years of family history along with the immediate pressure of keeping someone else safe. Walking away can feel like abandonment, even when it is actually an attempt to survive.

In this situation, the original poster was not simply leaving her elderly parents after a difficult moment. She had already stepped into a demanding caregiving role, moved in to help, witnessed a traumatic medical emergency, and tried to manage both her father’s injury and her mother’s uncertainty.

The emergency room argument appears to have been the moment where years of stress finally collided with one crisis too many. Her father’s drinking, her parents’ strained marriage, and the family history of conflict created emotional weight that existed long before the hospital visit.

Many people may initially see leaving as harsh, especially when her parents are elderly and vulnerable. However, another perspective is that caregivers are not machines. When adult children become caregivers, they often carry complicated emotions: love, guilt, anger, grief, and resentment can exist at the same time.

The fact that OP arranged outside support before stepping away shows that she was not abandoning her parents; she was recognizing that she could no longer be the only person holding everything together.

Geriatric care experts often emphasize that caregiver burnout is a serious issue, not a sign of selfishness. The National Institute on Aging explains that caregivers frequently experience emotional stress, exhaustion, and feelings of being overwhelmed, and it recommends seeking support services rather than trying to manage everything alone.

The American Psychological Association also recognizes that chronic caregiving stress can affect mental and physical health, making boundaries and support systems essential for long-term wellbeing.

This perspective helps explain OP’s decision. Her responsibility as a daughter does not require sacrificing her entire identity or accepting harmful family dynamics indefinitely. She can love her parents while admitting that she is not the right person to provide every hour of care they need.

In fact, stepping back may allow them to receive more appropriate assistance from professionals who are trained for these situations.

The healthiest next step is not cutting off love, but changing the role she plays. She can remain involved through calls, appointments, and coordination while allowing trained caregivers and services to handle daily responsibilities.

Guilt may continue because caring deeply does not disappear when boundaries are created. But choosing herself does not erase her compassion. Sometimes the most responsible form of love is recognizing when helping one person is destroying another.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters supported seeking professional help and believed OP made the right choice

Glass-Cheetah-2975 − There comes a time when you can’t do it, if your dad had fallen and there was no drinking involved the situation would be different.

coldgator − You did the right thing. This situation requires professionals.

RaqMountainMama − I completely understand. I have been in a similar situation but involving my dad with alzheimers and my abusive mom.

You do what you can do, then you call in the authorities, save your sanity and keep yourself out of prison. You did the right thing. It IS hard, and...

These Redditors offered empathy and reassurance, reminding OP to prioritize their own well-being

Jillo616 − As someone with an a__oholic father, I just want to send you a virtual hug. I’m so sorry.

You clearly care for them both and there’s nothing wrong with choosing yourself.

tessbovee − I feel you and I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself!

Unlikely-Draft − I'm so sorry. That sounds horrifying, scary and heartbreaking.

You just can't save some people and you can't rip yourself apart to keep them whole. ❤️

This group emphasized that OP had done what they could and could not carry full responsibility forever

alexdanhami − I am a nurse. I work with many elderly patients and I have quite a bit of insight to their lives.

When they need the most help I find that, not always but more than I would like to see,

they push even harder for independence and will deny the blatant deterioration of their lives.

You have probably done more to help them than you even realize. You have to live YOUR life. 🤍

tomphoolery − I think it’s fair to say that you did everything you could do, take comfort in that.

These users criticized the irresponsible behavior and agreed outside intervention was necessary

cinnamontwix − I’m sure he’s aware he shouldn’t be drinking on blood thinners. Completely irresponsible.

It’s not fair when we have to parent our parents or grandparents.

SerenityPickles − Good for you
