MIL Warns Family to Stay Away While Her Daughter-In-Law Is on Life Support, Then Expects Forgiveness

in Social Issues

A medical emergency can change how you see the people around you, especially when you wake up expecting support and realize almost no one came.

Fear, confusion, and loneliness can leave a lasting mark long after the hospital stay ends.

One woman is still struggling with that pain after surviving a near-fatal respiratory failure in late 2024.

She spent three days in a coma, woke up in the ICU frightened and disoriented, and learned that much of her husband’s family had been told not to visit or help with her one-year-old son.

At the same time, they were gathered for a large family birthday celebration.

Her husband later called it a misunderstanding, but she never stopped feeling abandoned.

Scroll down to see why the resentment returned and what finally pushed her to cut contact.

A woman wakes from a three-day coma to learn her in-laws were partying while she faced the ICU alone

not the actual photo

'Mil threw a party while I was in a coma?'

This happed November 2024 but I’m still holding a grudge cuz things

haven’t got any better with my mil. This is the worst thing she’s ever done

to me. Maybe the worst thing anyone has done to me.

I was in a coma for 3 days & she has a huge bday party for her mom at her

house with a bunch of out of state family. It lasted 2 days. My husband

needed someone to watch our son so he could bring me some stuff after I

woke up. I didn’t even have my phone. Mil thought I was contagious so she

told everyone not to go visit me or watch my son. Most of them were

sleeping at her house & she said she’d kick them out if they went near me

or my son. My son was 1 year old btw. So my husband had to trust someone

he hadn’t known for very long to watch out son while he spent 1 hour with

me. Kids aren’t allowed In the icu. No 1 thought to tell my parents I was in

the hospital on life support after a bad asthma attack where my lungs filled

with fluid and caused me to go into respiratory failure. I was a few minutes away from dying the doctor said.

So after I woke up with a tube down my throat & my hands strapped to the

bed, I had to spend almost 24 hours alone in the icu unable to sleep that

night cuz of the steroids they kept giving me. I kept having panic attacks

cuz I wanted my husband there, my emotions & thoughts were all out of

wack from all the drugs that keep you in a coma, it was 1 of the top 5 worst

experiences of my life. I still can’t forgive her. My parents didn’t know I was

in the hospital until I called them, the came the next morning cuz they live

in the next state over. I was discharged a few hours after they got there.

my BIL & SIL like didn’t care at all. They didn’t even talk to me when they

saw me afterwards. Didn’t ask how I was, they acted like it didn’t happen.

I’ve got this frustrating grudge ever since. My husband would tho no

contact with me. He forgave them right away. Said it was misunderstanding

the doctor said it was a different virus that is actually contagious when

really I just had a cold. I’m like I almost died alone but it’s ok cuz your

f__king mom just had a misunderstanding. My husbands entire family was

partying while I was in a coma having a machine breathe for me, and I’m

supposed to just get over it. Like no way, those people don’t give a f__k

about me & this proves it. I feel like who cares if I was contagious? My

asthma obviously isn’t contagious and that’s what caused the respiratory

failure. This was a near death experience and no one was there for me. My

other SIL & her family who live out to state came while I was still in a coma to see me but obviously I don’t remember.

A normal person would have been able to cough up the fluid in their lungs

from a regular cold. Idk why my body decided to try and k__l me instead. I

want to get past the resentment I have for my in laws but my mil just did

something else s__tty a few days ago which I just posted about on this

thread earlier. So all the feelings got brought back up. I also was upset my

husband didn’t stand up for me. He forgave them really quick and stated

getting mad at me cuz I couldn’t get past it soon enuf for his liking. I went

no contact for almost a year but my husband continued to bring our son

over for family dinners a couple times a month. I hope 1 day I can stop

feeling so hurt by it but I’ll never forgive. sorry for the trauma dump. I just needed to vent/rant & let that all out. Thanks for reading.

Update: thanks everyone for your kindness and support I really appreciate

hearing that I’m not the crazy one in this situation! My husband didn’t call

my parents cuz I’ve had a rocky on & off relationship with them since I was a

teen & he wasn’t sure if I wanted them there or not and was waiting for me

to wake up to tell them myself or ask me if I wanted him to call them. The

answer was yes I wish he had called them cuz they would have come right

away & watched our son so he could’ve been there with me in the icu. He

has a lot of regrets about what happened & has apologized & sees how

fucked up his family behaved and wishes he could have done things

different. We’re working thru our marriage with counseling & trying to be

better for each other & our son. However his family isn’t my family

anymore. I’ve gone no contact & blocked thier numbers & social media

accounts, I don’t want anything to do with them. They have been horrible

to me since this incident & I’m done having them in my life. F__k them, toxic ass psychos.

Few experiences reshape trust more deeply than surviving a medical crisis and realizing the people you expected to show up did not.

For this woman, the pain was not only that she spent hours alone in the ICU after waking from a coma.

It was that her husband’s family was nearby, celebrating together, while access to her and her one-year-old son was actively discouraged. In a moment when she was physically vulnerable, frightened, medicated, and recovering from respiratory failure, she felt abandoned.

That is why the resentment has lasted. Near-death experiences can make ordinary family tensions feel suddenly irreversible because they reveal who feels emotionally safe and who does not.

Her mother-in-law may have genuinely believed there was a contagious illness involved, but the way she reportedly handled that fear, discouraging visits and childcare, threatening relatives with consequences, and leaving the husband scrambling, turned uncertainty into exclusion.

The woman then woke up to the consequences of that decision.

There is also a different perspective on why she cannot simply “move on.” People often assume forgiveness is a matter of deciding not to be angry anymore.

In reality, resentment can persist when there was no meaningful repair afterward.

Her brother-in-law and sister-in-law reportedly acted as though nothing had happened.

Her husband initially minimized the situation as a misunderstanding. That left her carrying both the original trauma and the message that her reaction to it was inconvenient.

The brain often links present-day behavior with earlier moments of fear, helplessness, or betrayal.

It does not mean she is “holding onto drama.” It may mean the original wound never felt fully repaired.

The healthiest path is not forcing forgiveness.

Counseling with her husband, maintaining boundaries with his family, and letting trust be rebuilt only where accountability exists are more realistic goals.

She may eventually feel less angry without ever deciding that what happened was acceptable. Sometimes healing is not reconciliation.

Sometimes it is reaching the point where the memory no longer controls the present.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors were stunned that the husband never contacted her family during the emergency

crackersucker2 − This is a huge betrayal. Your husband never thought to

call your family? He didn’t skip the family events and be with you in case

you woke up? There was no family member that could watch your kid and skip the party (or take shifts)?

I couldn’t get over this either and my not so “dear” husband would be in

therapy with me to go over all the areas he absolutely let you down.

UncleBarBQ − I can understand being mad at your MIL but I don’t see how

she prevented your husband from calling your family on your behalf. That’s the bare minimum for a married partner.

andersonala45 − I’m sorry…why did your husband not contact your family?

matra_04 − Your husband couldn't be bothered to call your parents about this? What the actual f__k?

Shoeprincess − Um, why didn't your husband call your parents? ! Somethings up there.

fitzthefox − Uhhhhhh why the actual f__k didn't your husband call your

parents? ???? Like yeah your in-laws suck but I'd be more concerned about my spouse's behavior here.

Hot-Freedom-5886 − Sounds like you have a big husband problem, OP. Why

didn’t HE call your parents? I’d be holding a grudge about that…

This group said the real issue was a deeply unsupportive husband who failed his partner when she needed him most

elmo2702 − You have a major husband problem. Why didn't he call your

family? ??? Im not one to jump to divorce but he doesn't have your back in

any way shape or form. There's no way MIL would be seeing the kids either,

you don't know what BS she's saying in front of little ears that DH is letting slide.

Move in the shadows, get all your evidence together & get away from this

toxic family, none of them have your back. Good luck OP

OodalollyOodalolly − Why would you want to get over this? Your husband is

an absolute useless partner and I would call this a betrayal of your marriage

vows. When was he even going to call your parents? What are you getting

out of this marriage? You can’t rely on your husband one bit.

Jellibooti − That is quite literally one of the most malignant and malicious

things I’ve ever read. Nothing like a near death experience to really reveal

the full scope of your husband’s cowardice and where his true loyalty lies.

I also don’t understand why he didn’t contact your parents for you… to be

honest, even with copious amounts of couples therapy I personally would

have a hard time ever getting over an experience like this.

CeramicSavage − Your husband doesn't care about you let alone like you.

He didn't even call your parents. This is not a one off. This is your life forever.

Apprehensive_Let_811 − I read your other post and saw that your parents

don’t like your husband. I can understand why. He doesn’t seem very supportive of you at all.

What happened during that hospitalization left more than physical scars.

Waking from a coma frightened, isolated, and unable to see the people she needed most became tied to a family response she still experiences as abandonment.

Counseling may help her and her husband repair their marriage, but choosing no contact with his relatives can also be part of protecting her peace after repeated conflict.

Do you think cutting them off was justified after everything that happened, or should she eventually leave the door open? Could you forgive relatives after a crisis like this?
