Boyfriend Wanted Her House Title After Four Years, But His Plan Started Falling Apart

Buying a home is already a major life decision, but it becomes even more complicated when a romantic partner wants ownership rights without having shared the same financial journey. Questions about fairness, trust, and long-term commitment can quickly turn into serious relationship conflicts.

The original poster (OP) worked hard to purchase her childhood home and has spent months investing time and money into making it suitable for herself and her children. After four years together, her boyfriend expressed interest in moving in but wanted his name added to the title if he contributed financially.

OP worried this could put her and her children’s future security at risk, especially since their relationship already had unresolved disagreements about marriage and commitment. Read on to see whether Reddit believed OP was protecting herself or preventing her partner from having a fair stake.

'BF wants me to put him on the title of my house'

Original post: I (42f) have been dating my boyfriend (43m) for 4 years. I have 2 kids (9f and 14m) and he has no kids.

We met though a dating app and at the start he perused me but was on the fence because he didn’t really like the fact that I had kids “baggage”

and was adamant he did not want any kids of his own.

When we met I had been divorced since 2018, finished my degree, and I was living with my parents getting my money and career in order to move out.

Eventually he met and came to like the kids and sort of seemed to pivot to the idea of being a step dad and eventually, in a couple of years,...

He lives in an apartment with a roommate since I’ve met him.

He is very frugal and has what I consider a good amount of money saved, but will not move until he has 20% down on top of a certain amount.

it seems to me like he finds an excuse not to whenever an opportunity comes up.

Last year, he started talking about buying a house or rental property on his own and

When it was clear to me we were not going to move in together anytime soon or ever, i got sick of the indecision and started looking for a house.

I ended up buying my childhood house from my parents. It’s fixer upper on for me and the kids that I could afford.

He is not happy that now that this restricts his options : if we are going to live together it’s basically not the house he would choose.

It’s an old house and he’s worried it’s a health hazard because the basement needs water proofed and

He’s used to living in newer houses with his parents that were more well off. the house was sitting for 10 years and my dad and I were fixing it...

We’ve gotten in arguments because I think if he wanted to have a say in the house he should have looked for one with me.

Well now he’s saying he might want to move in with me but he would require a 2 car garage that he would need to build.

He would also want his own room.

I have a garage but it’s not big enough for his 2 cars.

So he wants me to put his name on the title of the house because he would be investing in the house and increasing the value.

he would also expect to pay half the mortgage for the next 10 years and then we would own the house.

I have a deal with my parents so he would be coming in without having helped with it this past several months I’ve been fixing it,

pay for this garage and possibly some other things, and maybe pay $600 a month until the house is payed off in 10 years (per my agreement).

I don’t want this because If we break up I wouldn’t be able to afford to buy him out at the value that the house would be in the future.

Although, It would be nice to have someone to split bills with. I thought if we got married this might give some more security

but He doesn’t think he wants to get married because he’s worried he would be somehow liable for my student loan debt. I know this isn’t the case.

Another point that’s been bothering me is Now, he seems regretful that he never had his own kids,

but doesn’t want to leave me to find someone younger to have kids with, but also “isn’t sure” what he wants.

He just wishes he had a Time Machine. I’m worried he is going to string me along until I’m 50 and then dump me for someone to have kids with.

And I thought about pushing for him to s__t or get off the pot, but there’s the title issue.

This is a sticking point that I don’t feel I can sign my house over to him even if he is investing in it,

and I’m not even sure he would follow through with that because he keeps changing his mind. But at this point I’m undecided. What should I do?

EDIT thank you for confirming that this isn’t a reasonable request on his part. I am not going to put him on the title.

As I said earlier I did sort of give him the option of saying if we got married maybe then, which he found an excuse for.

I have said there’s no point in even talking about living together since he might change his mind tomorrow

among other reasons that most of you have mentioned.

I told him it’s not happening the way he wants.

The house issue does seem like it’s forcing a breaking point and there are a lot of incompatibilities that I have yet to do anything about

EDIT: putting it at the top: We broke up. It was a rocky week.

He came over and we were just going to watch tv and not talk about it, but the house came up again and it escalated quickly.

He talked about investing 30k (now it’s a lower number than he said before)

into the house for roof and basement and paying half of my payments for the next few years.

(Starting in 2 years when he would want to move in) I am paying my parents over 10 years, no bank loan.

I’ve already invested thousands all new appliances, flooring, paint, labor, with zero help from him. He said most of it is lipstick on a pig.

I said that I don’t like the title idea because he could put in 30k,

get on the title and turn around and make money force a sale/ take half of what it’s worth now. more than what I’m paying.

He said I am so stupid and insane and that’s not how it works, he should get in at the price that I got in for. Not the value of...

That’s just how investing works duh.

He said I’m dooming the relationship by thinking he would be able to s__ew me over and force a sale for more.

I asked why does he care so much about the title if he’s not protecting his own ass too in case of a breakup?

I said I wanted to leave it to the kids and he said that’s basically insane and it’ll be worthless by then better to sell it and get a better...

I said why I can rent it. It clear he wants to sell this house and use it for capital to buy another house so that he does not have...

He said fine his offer is rescinded he’s going to buy a duplex and in a few years I will be drowning financially and be begging him to move in.

It was already off the table for me when he said he didn’t want to get married ever. He said it wouldn’t matter if we were. I told him he’s...

Somehow he just kept getting angrier as i was trying to explain why it doesn’t make sense for him to have his name on the title for not much investment.

I even said well maybe there’s another way to protect your investment some kind of contact where you would get that amount back. He scoffed at that.

Finally he said you want me to pay you more than your payments?

And said f__k off, gave me the finger and said have a nice life and stormed off and drove away in his new truck.

I guess i am relieved and upset at the same time.

It seems like he really only was waiting it out to get financial gain.

i don’t know if he’s gaslighting himself or me with insisting that this was a good offer but obviously he was not willing to compromise at all.

Major life decisions often reveal what people truly value in a relationship. In this situation, the OP was not simply deciding whether to add someone’s name to a property title. She was trying to protect the stability she built for herself and her children while figuring out whether her partner’s vision of a future together actually matched hers.

The emotional conflict is complicated because both sides appear to want security, but they define security differently. The OP sees the house as a foundation she worked hard to create after divorce, financial rebuilding, and raising two children. It represents independence and something she hopes to preserve for her family.

Her boyfriend appears to see ownership as protection for his own financial contribution and a way to avoid investing in something where he has no legal stake.

However, the difference lies in the timing and circumstances. The OP’s concern is not that her boyfriend should receive nothing if he contributes.

She even considered alternatives, such as protecting his investment through another agreement. The issue is that he wanted ownership rights in an asset that already existed before his contribution, while also refusing other forms of commitment that would provide mutual security, such as marriage.

A different perspective is that the boyfriend may feel uncomfortable entering a home where he has limited control. For someone who values financial independence, paying toward a property without ownership could feel risky. His concern about contributing money to something he does not legally own is understandable.

But a healthy partnership requires finding a solution that protects both people, not one where one person gains significant legal power while the other carries most of the original risk.

Financial therapist Ed Coambs explains that money disagreements in relationships are often connected to deeper emotional needs such as safety, trust, fairness, and control. He notes that couples often argue about numbers when the real conflict is about what money represents to each person. Ed Coambs Financial Therapy official website

This perspective helps explain why this disagreement became so intense. The boyfriend may have been focused on protecting his investment, while the OP was focused on protecting her family’s security. Neither concern is automatically unreasonable, but the conversation requires cooperation rather than pressure.

What stands out most is the reaction when the OP expressed hesitation. Instead of exploring a compromise, such as a legal agreement outlining repayment or ownership percentages, he reportedly dismissed her concerns, insulted her, and became angry.

That response changes the issue from a financial disagreement into a relationship problem. A person can have different financial goals without attacking their partner for having boundaries.

The OP’s hesitation also seems connected to a larger pattern. She describes years of uncertainty about whether he wants marriage, children, or a shared future. The house argument appears to have exposed a deeper fear: that she is being asked to make permanent sacrifices for someone who remains unsure about committing.

The realistic solution is not for either person to “win” the house debate. It is for both to honestly evaluate whether their long-term goals align. A partner who wants a future together should be willing to discuss protections for both sides, respect existing responsibilities, and understand why a parent would be cautious about risking their children’s stability.

The OP’s decision to protect her home was not only about money. It was about recognizing that love and financial entanglement should not require giving up security. A healthy relationship should make both people feel safer, not force one person to gamble everything while the other negotiates from a position of advantage.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors strongly warned OP not to put the boyfriend on the house title because of the financial risks

MichaelAndolini_ − Do not under any circumstances do this Do not

Edit: for anyone wondering the deleted comment they claimed the bf living there for a year legally puts him on the title

Hopeful-Artichoke449 − DO NOT DO THIS

Ammonia13 − No No No NOOO

These commenters believed the boyfriend was prioritizing ownership and financial benefits over building a partnership

NamelessStress − It seems like he is looking for the easy way out.

In other words, he is utilising your efforts, money and land without any regard for your future together.

He wants to own something by investing for it at the bare minimum.

The shortest possible answer is: do not agree to his conditions. Do not do anything. Think about yourself and your kids.

After you decline his offer, I am absolutely sure that he is going to try to guilt-trip you or persuade you

that his idea is for the greater good. It is not. He is being greedy. Stick to your guns and do not give in.

itoshiineko − Don’t put him on your house title. From the sound of it, I’d be worried about the same thing if I were you.

No-Pie-5138 − One of my best friends made this mistake.

She really wants out of her relationship but now she’s stuck with him unless she sells and gets half bc he is on her house title.

He hasn’t and doesn’t contribute a damned thing.

These users encouraged OP to protect the house and reconsider the relationship entirely

bloontsmooker − Get rid of this dude entirely.

Conscious_Bet_2005 − Just break up with him. TRUST ME you will find someone better.

Put the house in a living trust for your kids/bloodline alone so that NO ONE you marry can take your children’s inheritance.

StretcherEctum − Why on earth would someone willingly give half of their house to someone else? Just think for a second.

breadmakerquaker − Re: title — that’s nice. And I want a pony. Tell BF we can’t always get what we want.

Was his proposal merely financially naive, or did his refusal of every compromise reveal his real objective? Would any ownership arrangement have been safe without marriage?
