Bride Moves Her Wedding Days Before It Starts, Then Gets Upset When Her Best Friend Can’t Attend

Wedding guests can be expected to make reasonable accommodations, but OP feels the line was crossed when the couple was given less than a week to reorganize a prepaid trip and find childcare.

OP’s wife had received a wedding invitation months in advance for a three-day celebration. The original plans allowed their baby to attend, and OP had deliberately scheduled a birthday trip to San Diego for his wife immediately after the wedding. The hotel was already paid for when the bride’s mother suddenly announced that the wedding dates were being moved forward by two days.

On top of that, the couple was now expected to attend without their baby. With both sets of grandparents unavailable, they couldn’t simply arrange childcare at the last minute.

When they declined, the bride and her mother treated the decision as a betrayal, arguing that OP’s wife should prove the friendship mattered by cancelling her birthday trip and paying for childcare. Rather than completely miss the wedding, OP’s wife eventually chose a compromise: attend the first day, then leave for the trip as planned.

A couple refuses a wedding date change made six days before the event, after their plans and childcare became impossible to rearrange

'AITAH for refusing to attend a good friend’s wedding after they changed the dates less than 6 days out?'

UPDATE: We ended up compromising and attended the first day of wedding festivities today.

We aren’t attending the rest of their celebration. This way, we can still go on our trip to San Diego.

The mom was very disappointed but the friend was accepting of the fact that we came to one out of the 3 days.

I told my wife it’s her friend so she made the decision.

But if her friend/friend’s mom is still sour about this later on, it’s probably not a friendship worth maintaining.

My wife’s good friend got engaged about 5 months ago and they sent out wedding invitations 3 months ago.

The original wedding invitations said we could bring our baby as well. The wedding is supposed to last 3 days and right after the last day is my wife’s birthday.

I had planned a 4 day trip to San Diego to take my wife to visit a few of her favourite places.

Yesterday, this friend’s mother texted my wife advising they suddenly changed the dates by two days forward

and the wedding is now falls during the trip I planned. She also tells my wife we can no longer bring our baby.

Problem is, I already paid for our San Diego hotel and we don’t have childcare because both of our parents are unavailable.

We both told the friend’s mother that we can no longer make the wedding.

The friend and the mom are very upset and saying things like they thought my wife was her bff

and that if they were truly friends my wife should adjust our trip and pay for our own childcare.

This friend is horrifically bad at planning. My wife had to plan her bachelorette party and paid for it.

I feel like I’m in the right to refuse to accommodate her poor planning. My wife feels similar. Who is right?

Few things test a friendship like a last-minute change to a major life event. Weddings are emotionally important, but so are commitments people make around them, especially when money, childcare, travel, and carefully planned family time are already involved.

The husband’s frustration is understandable. The couple had received invitations months earlier, planned around the original three-day schedule, paid for a hotel in San Diego, and expected to bring their baby. Less than a week before the event, the dates changed and the childcare arrangement effectively disappeared.

The bride’s family then treated the couple’s inability to reorganize everything as evidence that the friendship was not genuine. That turns a logistical problem into a test of loyalty, which can make an already difficult situation much more adversarial.

There is another perspective, though. Wedding planning can occasionally collapse under circumstances guests never see. A venue problem, family emergency, religious requirement, or other unexpected issue could have forced the change. The bride may also have been devastated that a close friend could not attend.

Her disappointment is understandable even if her expectations were unreasonable. The key distinction is between being hurt and being entitled to demand that someone absorb the consequences of a late change.

Psychologist and relationship researcher Elaine Hatfield has studied the powerful role of expectations in close relationships. Research on relationship expectations suggests that people often judge the strength of a relationship partly by whether the other person behaves according to what they believe close friends “should” do.

When expectations become rigid, however, disappointment can quickly become resentment because the disagreement is interpreted as evidence of insufficient caring rather than a conflict between competing commitments.

That distinction is useful here. The friend apparently viewed attending the entire wedding as something a best friend would naturally prioritize. The couple viewed the original invitation as a commitment they had reasonably organized their lives around.

Neither interpretation is inherently absurd, but the timing makes a substantial difference. Asking someone to rearrange a trip booked around the original dates, find emergency childcare, and absorb additional costs is a significant request.

The update actually shows a thoughtful compromise. Attending the first day allowed the wife to demonstrate that the friendship mattered without sacrificing the entire family trip. The friend accepted that arrangement, while her mother remained disappointed. That is probably a healthier outcome than turning the situation into a loyalty contest.

The strongest point is that friendship should allow room for disappointment without demanding proof of devotion. A close friend can say, “I’m heartbroken you can’t stay,” while still recognizing that circumstances changed after the other person had already made reasonable commitments.

Sometimes the most revealing part of a conflict is not the inconvenience itself, but whether both sides can acknowledge that the other person has legitimate priorities. In this case, the compromise suggests they found that balance at least for now.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors said a wedding invite is not an obligation, especially after a last-minute date change

Designer_Thought2907 − NTA, it's a wedding invite not a court summons. Tell her you'll come to the next wedding

blackivie − NTA. An invitation is not a summons. They changed the date last minute. They should expect that some people may be unable to attend.

Unique_Ad_3312 − NTA. Changing a wedding date last minute is crazy. Expecting everyone to be able to accommodate is even crazier. Enjoy your trip!

Murky_Possibility_68 − You can't just change a wedding date after invitations are sent out. Nta.

This group felt OP should honor the plans already made rather than rearrange everything for the new date

Wild-Association1680 − NTA. You have an obligation to attend the event you RSVPed yes to. This is not that event.

Mission_Breakfast548 − NTA and this is not a friend.

Friends would understand that their last minute change makes this impossible for your family.

They changed the date last minute - it’s their issue and no one else’s.

These commenters questioned how moving an entire wedding at the last minute was even realistic

W0nderingMe − I mean, OBVIOUSLY NTAH. So much so that I question if this is real.

Why would a bride not check to see if her "bff" could attend? Why exclude the baby? Why isn't the "bff" involved in the planning

What in the af are the logistics that make moving a wedding at the last second reasonable? ?? None of this makes any sense whatsoever.

pseudotumorgal − How do you move a whole wedding last minute?

Caterers, venue, photographer, literally everything. I can’t see how this is real but obviously you know NTA.

These users thought expecting everyone to accommodate the sudden change was unreasonable

thepolishedpipette − Absolutely NTA. These people are nuts. Idk how or why anyone would show up for this wedding.

thenewfoundlandyeti − You are most certainly NOT the only people who wont be attending based on this sudden and seemingly ridiculous change. NTA.

"You can pay for your own childcare" Return with "We blew our childcare budget on *your* Bachelorette party"

Was attending one out of three days a fair compromise, or should the couple have skipped the wedding entirely? And how much inconvenience should friendship reasonably require when somebody changes major plans at the last minute?
