Bureaucrat Tries to Steal $345, Gets Hit With $3,500 Bill Instead

Messing with a teacher’s pay is a special kind of low blow.

One district bureaucrat, a “Federal Action Plan Office Lady,” tried to retroactively dock a bilingual teacher’s pay for 11.5 hours, claiming he was “double dipping.”

She demanded he “just sign” the form. He did, but his signature wasn’t just an act of compliance. It was an act of war.

The bureaucrat would soon regret her demand.

Not the actual photo

Just sign this document that will dock you 11.5 hours…?

I’m a middle school teacher who speaks fluent Spanish, thanks to growing up in the West Valley (Go Suns!).

The fact that I’m bilingual has given me many opportunities, including one where a teacher in charge of an English Language Learner (ELL, important acronym for later) program

gave me the opportunity to tutor students twice weekly, plus an additional fifteen minutes per every hour worked as prep time.

Okay cool, so mondays and fridays I punch in fifteen minutes before 2:20, during my 7th hour prep, then punch out at 3:30 when the kids left. No problem, right?.

Wrong.

At the end of the year I get an email saying I’m being docked 11.5 hours that were punched in before the end of the day. I was livid.

They claimed I’m getting double paid, but I looked through everything I signed off on, and didn’t remember seeing any restrictions on WHEN I was to punch in for those...

We met in the office and the district representative had me sign this document, and she showed me the contract I signed.

Nowhere did it specify when I was to punch in those hours, and I brought this to both peoples attention who was present, but Federal Action Plan (fap?) Office Lady...

Enter Malicious Compliance

I signed quickly, this time using my “ middle name “, which happens to be F$ck thi$ bull$hit. It read O f#ck this bullsh#t P.

I happen to know the person at district office , DO Savior, who will be reviewing this paperwork, and know that she’ll either ask me what’s up, or to have...

Like clockwork I got a phone call on my 7th hour prep from DOSavior. She asked why I signed like this, and why I’m being docked.

I explained my working with the two new students who don’t speak any English all year, and even teaching them both English all year.

I explained that no one said anything All Year, and that I’d have made the adjustment to get paid those hours the entire school year.

She (dos) says “wait a minute, you were on your prep time right? And you’re bilingual? Do you have a cert?”. All answers were yes.

My next paycheck was $3500 more than my standard paycheck, coming out of The FAP LAdys budget for Federal Action plans. I was very confused at first.

It appears that I CAN punch in during my contract hours if it is on my scheduled prep, and because I have an ELL endorsement

(I got this endorsement working with monolingual students in the west valley ) and my direct supervisor on campus doesn’t, I get paid as an ELL leader on campus, quite...

So what was supposed to be a 345 dollar deduction in pay for me turned out to be ten times greater, as a deduction from THEIR department paid directly to...

So looks like FAP lady’s right…. I CANT get double paid. But looks like I can get DoubleQuintuple paid!

TLDR- District office Paper Pusher tries to apply a nonexistent rule retroactively to save herself a Buck. She lost 11 of those “bucks” to me. Thanks!

You can feel the OP’s quiet fury. This “FAP Lady” is a classic petty tyrant, drunk on a tiny bit of power, who just had to enforce a rule that didn’t even exist. She wasn’t just wrong; she was confidently wrong.

The signature was the perfect flare to send up to the one person who could see the smoke, and that’s exactly what “DO Savior” did.

This is a story about arrogant assumptions and the power of specialized skills. The “FAP Lady” saw a simple “double dipping” problem.

The OP’s signature forced “DO Savior” to look closer, revealing the real context: this wasn’t double-dipping, it was a highly certified specialist (the OP) performing a critical task (ELL tutoring) during his designated prep time.

This attempt to claw back $345 is even more insulting when you look at the reality of the teaching profession. The National Education Association (NEA) reported in 2023 that teachers average 54 hours a week, with a staggering 25 of those hours being totally uncompensated.

The fact this bureaucrat tried to take money back from a teacher doing vital, extra work is infuriating.

The OP’s signature was a perfect act of malicious compliance. It’s a weapon for the powerless. Dr. Ron Riggio, writing for Psychology Today, calls it a “low-power employee’s weapon against a high-power, disliked manager.” The goal is to follow the rule (“Just sign it!”) to the letter to “expose that rule’s absurdity.”

The OP’s method was brilliant. But some commenters pointed out other legal moves. One user mentioned signing “Vi Coactus” or “V.C.” This is Latin for “under duress” and is an (admittedly rare) legal signal that you believe the contract is invalid. But the OP’s method was faster. He didn’t just void the bad contract; he unlocked a better one.

Here’s what the Reddit community had to say:

Redditors were thrilled by the payoff and the FAP Lady’s humiliation, pointing out that the OP’s certifications were the key.

[Reddit User] − TL DR= You are certified, paper pusher boss ain’t. You got paid. Good for you.

[Reddit User] − Nice! As if teachers don't have it hard enough, they try to pull some nonsense on you. Glad you came out on top in the end.

What were the reactions of the people who wanted to dock your pay? Were they pissed?

Stabbmaster − Making other departments pay for their stupidity is always the best way to make them see they are doing things incorrectly and they need to shut up before...

GeekynGlorious − This is perfect! As a former teacher, I applaud you. Elvishgirl − You deserve every penny. I can't believe they tried to get you to clock out for...

Many users loved the signature, sharing their own acts of malicious signing and giving legal advice (with a warning).

Legitimate_Roll7514 − I once signed a write up as Eat A. Bagodicks D1ckatwork − "Vi Coactus" or "V. C. " is used with a signature to indicate that the signer...

The signer uses such marking to signal that the agreement was made under duress, and that it is their belief that it invalidates their signature.

C00lK1d1994 − In future do not sign like that. Just because it’s not your name or usual signature doesn’t mean it’s not your signature at all.

PastFly1003 − Way back in the dim days of prehistory I was attending college on a work scholarship when Congress decided

to reeestablish the Selective Service system (post-Vietnam), and tied any/all federal education assistance to SS registration.

This meant when I went to register for classes at the start of my sophomore year, I found that I - and every other male receiving a scholarship or grant

- had to divert to an extra stop in the registration queue and sign a new form asserting we had complied with the registration requirement before we could get our...

Only one table with a couple of attendants had been set up to handle the forms for every registering male of age, though, so that table was an understandably hectic...

I thought the requirement was b__lshit - so when they handed me the form, I scribbled “Daffy Duck” on the signature line and handed it right back.

I was somewhat surprised (and more than a little amused) to see them take the form and put it - with absolutely no review - on their Processed pile,

where it was immediately buried under others. I fully expected -some- degree of blowback, but nobody ever said a word to me about it.

During junior year registration, though, I did notice the university had more than one table working - and each form was being closely reviewed before going onto the Processed pile....

One user gave the OP a sober warning: the petty tyrant will be back.

StangF150 − OP, keep an eye on your hours, your pay, and anything else coming from that Supervisor.

As I would expect sum petty BS to be coming from them at some point!

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

This is a classic “sign this or you’re fired” trap. You’re presented with a document you know is false. Signing it feels like admitting guilt. Refusing to sign can be seen as insubordination.

The OP’s move was high-risk, high-reward, and worked because he had an ally in the system. A safer move is to sign, but add a note.

Write “Signing to acknowledge receipt, but I do not agree with the contents” or “See attached rebuttal.”

Then, immediately type up a professional email to your boss and HR, calmly outlining your side of the story (like the OP did with DO Savior). This creates a paper trail proving you didn’t agree with the write-up, you just acknowledged it.

This story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the system can work. The FAP Lady’s power trip blew up in her face, costing her department ten times what she tried to save.

What do you think? Was the OP’s signature pure genius or just lucky? And what’s the most ridiculous thing a petty boss has ever tried to pull on you?
