Summary:
- Byron Bowers has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man series, which includes Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Demetrius Grosse, Ben Kingsley, and Ed Harris.
- Set under the Marvel Spotlight banner, the series will offer a fresh, standalone story centered around 90s Avenger Simon Williams.
Marvel Studios has added Byron Bowers to the cast of its upcoming Wonder Man series. Bowers, known for his role in Lady In The Lake, joins an already impressive lineup that includes Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Demetrius Grosse, Ben Kingsley, and Ed Harris.
There are also rumors that Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk will be part of the cast. While Bowers’ role in the series remains undisclosed, the storyline is expected to revolve around 90s Avenger Simon Williams, with potential connections to the West Coast Avengers, Scarlet Witch, and Vision. Fans may learn more about the series at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con.
Wonder Man will be part of the Marvel Spotlight banner on Disney+, which means it will have looser ties to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
This approach aims to make the series more accessible to newcomers. Echo was the first Marvel Spotlight series, and Wonder Man will follow in its footsteps.
“Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity,” Marvel Studios Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum said during a press event for Echo.
Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.
Kevin Feige Teases Unique Direction for Wonder Man
Despite a quiet year for Marvel Studios’ Disney+ shows in 2024, the lineup for next year looks promising with Ironheart, Daredevil: Born Again, and Wonder Man on the horizon.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently discussed the future of Marvel TV on The Official Marvel Podcast, hinting at a completely different experience for fans with Wonder Man.
“Marvel is The House of Ideas, it’s always been The House of Ideas, and I hope we’ll always be the House of Ideas. Which means, taking new storylines and new characters to new places. Sometimes they’ll hit and sometimes they won’t,” Feige said.
“When you stop trying, you atrophy and the whole thing will fall in on itself. I think it’s trying to tell new and unique stories in different ways. We have a show coming up that we’ve talked very little about called Wonder Man, that I won’t talk about much today either except to say it’s extremely different than what we’ve done before.”
