Great news for Nathan Fillion fans and the DC Universe alike! Fillion, renowned for his role as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly, is set to shine as Green Lantern Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman film. This role adds to his extensive superhero portfolio across both DC and Marvel spectrums.
In a recent conversation with Collider, Fillion shared the story of how he landed the role, thanks to director James Gunn, with whom he has worked on several projects. It turns out that Gunn had offered Fillion the role all the way back after The Suicide Squad in 2021, as the 53-year-old shared below:
“We were actually at the premiere party after Suicide Squad and he was in a huge crowd of people. We saw each other in the crowd and I congratulated him, ‘Oh, my God, that was amazing. It’s so great.’ He goes, ‘Hey, did Peter [Safran] tell you what we’ve got for you next?’ I said, ‘No, he hasn’t said.’ He looked around like someone was gonna be listening. We were in a throng of people, but he leaned over and said, ‘You’re gonna be Guy Gardner,’” the actor recalled with disbelief.
This isn’t Fillion’s first rodeo in the superhero genre. He has voiced several characters in DC animated films, such as Justice League: Doom, Green Lantern: Emerald Knight, The Death of Superman, and Green Lantern: Emerald Knight. He also voices Steve Trevor in the animated Wonder Woman movie, Vigilante on Justice League Unlimited, and even has a brief live-action role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
The Castle star also appeared in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series as an alien prisoner in the first movie, and as Master Karja, the leader of the Orgosentries and the Orgoscope’s security head in the threequel.
Reflecting on his lifelong passion for comics, Fillion mentioned his childhood collection, emphasizing how James Gunn’s rendition of Guardians of the Galaxy changed his perspective on a series he couldn’t connect with during his youth.
“I used to collect comic books. I had a comic book rack in my room that you could spin. I remembered Guardians of the Galaxy and I remember that I couldn’t relate to it in any way. Just couldn’t get into it for any reason. Spider-Man held something for me. Batman had something that I really liked inside. The X-Men, I couldn’t get enough. But Guardians? Eh. That movie moved me,” shared Fillion.
With David Corenswet stepping into the iconic role of Superman, Fillion joins an exciting cast alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Isabella Merced, and Nicholas Hoult that is set to redefine the DC Universe under the fresh vision of James Gunn and Peter Safran. As the DC Universe prepares to launch Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters with the new Superman movie, fans can anticipate a thrilling integration of classic characters with modern storytelling.
With such a seasoned actor taking on a key role like Guy Gardner, the upcoming Superman movie is shaping up to be a can’t-miss addition to the superhero genre.
