Canadian Man Called a “Passport Bro” for Dating an Italian Man

Friendships are supposed to offer support, but sometimes, a friend reveals a jealous, entitled streak that derails everything.

A 26-year-old Canadian man moved to Italy two years ago to live with his Italian boyfriend, Luca. When the couple visited Canada and stayed with the man’s long-time friend, Emma, the welcome quickly soured.

Emma began openly flirting with Luca, making him visibly uncomfortable. When the boyfriend finally intervened, Emma unleashed a series of bizarre, toxic, and utterly baseless accusations that left the man furious and his friend group divided.

Now, read the full story:

Not the actual photo

AITA for crashing out bc my friend called me a passport bro?

I'm male, 26. I've been with my BOYFRIEND Luca for five years. Basically we met when I went to Italy for a photogrpahy project, and we clicked really fast

(im fluent in Italian, ive been learning since I was 10, and he is 100% Italian as well).

Two years ago, I moved in with him in Italy! A week ago, we visited Canada (where im from) and stayed at my friend Emma's house.

She was basically all over Luca and flirting with him and everything. Luca told me he was uncomfortable and I told her to stop,

and then she started [swearing] at me, saying [stuff] like I was creepy for going for Italian men (Luca is legit the only Italian man I know)

THEN SHE CALLED ME A PASSPORT BRO!? And then she was like "you're [creepy] becaude he has a more feminine and younger face so basically you're attracted to younger italian...

Luca and I are the same age!? And she was like "youre not twaching him english so he can be clueless and you can feed your white saviour complex"

at that point i [completely lost it] and said some not nice things, and told her she should lay off on the omegaverse yaoi she's reading (which was kinda out...

Now she's mad and got our mutual friends to gang up on me, and Luca's saying I should apologize but also set boundaries with her. AITA???. (Also sorry for the...

This entire explosion was rooted in jealousy and a desperate need for deflection. Emma was caught red-handed disrespecting her friend’s relationship by flirting aggressively, and her immediate response was to launch a toxic, intellectualized attack.

The accusations she hurled—”passport bro,” “white savior complex,” and fetishizing “younger, more feminine” Italian men—are all based on extreme internet jargon that she clearly failed to understand. Luca is OP’s age and from a developed Western nation, making the “passport bro” claim entirely nonsensical.

The sheer absurdity of the verbal attack highlights that Emma’s intent wasn’t to critique OP’s behavior but to inflict maximum pain and shift the focus away from her own inappropriate conduct. When people feel backed into a corner, they often use deflection and projection. Emma clearly felt uncomfortable with being called out for flirting, so she reached for the most aggressive, pseudo-intellectual slurs she could find online.

The term “passport bro” generally refers to men from wealthier countries who seek out partners in less developed countries, capitalizing on financial power dynamics. This gives them an advantage in relationships where the partner might rely on them for financial stability or citizenship.

When this term is misused, especially against someone dating a partner from a developed Western nation, it reveals a profound misunderstanding of both power dynamics and global relationships. According to a study reported by the Pew Research Center in 2021, the motivations behind international relationships are highly varied, and accusations of transactional intent are often baseless when partners come from similar socioeconomic backgrounds.

Emma’s desperate attempt to equate OP’s loving, five-year relationship with an exploitative practice demonstrates her readiness to weaponize political jargon to cover her personal failings. A therapist might suggest this is a textbook example of “gaslighting,” where the abuser tries to twist the facts so aggressively that the victim begins to question their own reality.

OP didn’t deserve to be attacked. His reaction, while possibly over the top with the “omegaverse yaoi” comment, was a natural “crash out” after enduring such bizarre and baseless cruelty.

Check out how the community responded:

The entire community stood firmly with OP, arguing that Emma was not a true friend and was clearly acting out of extreme jealousy.

One-Half-8733 - NTA… she was TA the moment she started flirting with your boyfriend. Then it sounds like she was projecting.

She’s probably jealous cause your boyfriend sounds pretty cool, and even trying to play fair for your sake. Forget about her. She’s not a friend

SoulSiren_22 - NTA. She crossed the line so much she couldn't even see if when she looks back. If she reacts like this when you call her out for making...

Tell your mutual friends your side of the story and if they don't accept it, move on with your life in Italy, enjoying your time with yoir boyfriend.

Alarmed_Transition84 - NTA, you need to take that girl to Italy and find her another boy because she is clearly jealous of what she doesn't have

nasnedigonyat - Not your friend. That's a parasite

Many commenters immediately noted how ridiculous the “passport bro” accusation was given the context.

Fresh_Leek_ - The passport bro thing is men taking advantage of women from third world countries and moving them over to the US or whatever.

The woman then has a lot less power in the relationship and not much power to leave. Italy isn’t a third world country. I’m curious, were there no red flags...

dinorawrr - NTA she was flirting with/fetishising and making Luca uncomfortable. And it seems like she's chronically online But doesn't seem to actually understand what 'passport bro' means

Some users also pointed out the underlying racism in Emma’s attempt to paint Italians as “less than” or “other.”

yumi_raven - First of all, NTA. Your friend is not really your friend. You don’t flirt with your friend’s partner and you definitely don’t make racist comments

that sound straight out of the 19th century, when Italians, Poles, and Irish people were still considered “not quite white. ” I’m guessing she’s Canadian?

Because that whole “for the green card, right? ” attitude sounds like a wannabe racist American. (You can always tell her you’re after an EU passport, not the other way...

Even those who recognized the messy tone of the post still felt the friend was the aggressor.

Mobile_Cranberry_575 - NTA. For getting upset with your friend that happens when insulted by a friend.

dazaikinnie - NTA? just… what? How does she act like that and think she’s in the right, and the fact your mutual friends are ganging up on you

either means this isn’t the full story or your friend group has severe brain damage😭

OP has nothing to apologize for. He defended his boundaries and his boyfriend against a massive wave of inappropriate behavior and verbal abuse. Luca’s suggestion to apologize might be an attempt to smooth things over, but capitulating to this level of toxicity only enables Emma’s bad behavior.

The best move is to cut Emma off and return to Italy with the boyfriend, leaving the drama behind.

Have you ever had a friend’s jealousy completely ruin a relationship? Should OP apologize just to keep the peace?
