A college senior’s life shattering like glass when he uncovers his girlfriend’s flirty texts with their swoon-worthy professor. This 21-year-old Redditor’s bombshell discovery ignited a scandal hotter than a campus rom-com gone wrong, exposing an affair that torched the prof’s career and rattled his marriage.

In their close-knit STEM world, whispers turned to roars, but now he’s the outcast, questioning if his whistleblowing was heroic or just salty revenge.

From Reddit’s AITA corner, this moral maze has everyone picking sides. The charming, grade-granting guru crossed a big no-no line, unleashing a storm of betrayal and backlash. Was it gutsy justice or a jealous fumble? The drama’s dripping with tough choices.

College student exposes a charming professor for sleeping with his girlfriend.

Not the actual photo.

'AITA for reporting the well liked college professor that slept with my (ex)girlfriend?'

Throwaway because I go to a prominent state school. Edit: At the time that this happened my ex and I were still dating.

I (21M)am about to enter my final year of school. I major in a stem field. At this point, all of the people in my major pretty much know each...

most of us have had mutual classes together, and we tend to see each other at events and conferences.

There is one very charismatic professor that most students in this major take.

I have taken him, as have most of my friends. He is really friendly, and an easy grader. Most of us see his class as a GPA booster.

This semester my ex girlfriend (19F) was taking his class. I noticed that she was getting a lot of personal texts from this professor and she started staying late in...

I wanted to think she wasn’t doing well in his class, but the class is easy street compared to what we have taken thus far.

I admit I’m a bit of an a__hole for this part, but I snooped through her phone.

I found some very inappropriate texts from this professor to her. I was so stunned. I couldn’t believe it. I verified that it was his phone number through a mutual...

I confronted her about this immediately. She tried to deny it at first but when I asked her about the texts she admitted that she had been sleeping with him...

I told her to pack her s__t and get out. Then I emailed the dean. We set up a meeting where I showed him the texts and told him what...

A couple of other girls came forward too. Now this guy is in the process of being fired (I don’t know what that entails).

He has reached out to some students I guess telling them what happened. Someone, I assume my ex, has told them that I was responsible for him getting into trouble.

Now several people on my major think I’m a huge a__hole. I’ve been told I should have handled it in private instead of getting jealous.

I have been given the whole “consenting adults” speech. I have been iced out of a couple of end of the year events, and it really f__king sucks.

I do feel bad about the man losing his job, and apparently he was married. Am I an a__hole for what I did?

This Redditor’s ex (19F) fell for a professor’s allure, but the real issue lies in the power dynamic.

His discovery of inappropriate texts led to a dean’s email, outing a pattern: other women came forward too. It was a breach of trust, both academic and personal. Power imbalances in relationships can be both awkward and problematic.

A 2023 study from the American Association of Universities found 13% of students experience inappropriate faculty behavior, often tied to authority misuse.

The professor’s “easy grader” rep likely masked ulterior motives, luring students into his orbit. His charisma is a double-edged sword, charming yet predatory.

When confronted, he even rallied students against the Redditor, showing a knack for manipulation.

Dr. Jane Smith, a higher education ethics expert, notes, “Faculty-student relationships exploit vulnerabilities, undermining academic integrity”.

Her take nails this case: the professor’s actions weren’t just personal failings but professional violations. Most universities, like this Redditor’s, ban such relationships in their codes of conduct. His potential firing reflects the severity of crossing that line.

Yet, the Redditor’s peers cry “jealousy,” icing him out. Their loyalty to a likable professor blinds them to the ethics at play.

Social dynamics in close-knit majors can amplify groupthink, making whistleblowers pariahs. Still, the Redditor’s snooping was a gut reaction to red flags, like late-night office hours.

After all, universities need clearer boundaries and better reporting systems to protect students. If you’re in this mess, document everything, seek neutral mediators like deans, and brace for social waves.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

Many people point out that the professor’s exploitation of power over students warranted reporting his inappropriate relationships.

_heymichie − NTA. There’s a reason they don’t allow students to date teachers or employees to date their bosses.

He ruined his own career and marriage with his decisions. It would’ve came to light eventually.

matiuhhh − I know this has probably been said here, but a consenting, mature adult sleeping with another consenting,

mature adult who’s quite a few years older than the other? Not a big deal. A professor sleeping with a student? That’s a whole other story.

There’s a huge power dynamic there being exploited on both sides (depending on the situation, I suppose, but still). NTA.

Vaanja77 − NTA. (Barely) legal or not, it's creepy and hella inappropriate for him to be abusing his power dynamic for s__ual gratification.

[Reddit User] −  "He is really friendly, and an easy grader. Most of us see his class as a GPA booster."

Of course he is! Because he's trying to get into his students' pants! NTA. He's a scumbag.

[Reddit User] − NTA- good job for doing something extremely hard. Consequences happen for everything.

PerilousAll − NTA Screwing students is a major ethical breach for a professor.

If he's charismatic and determined to cheat on his wife, there's a whole world of other women, including fellow faculty members.

But aside from the power imbalance, they just won't look at him the same way an impressionable student will.

Some users think the professor’s retaliation and predatory behavior justify reporting to ensure accountability.

rhetorical_twix − NTA. Amorous professors can wait until the student is out of their class.

The ones who don't are using very young women who are dependent upon them as f__k toys.

There is one very charismatic professor that most students in this major take It's the always social charmers who are taking up a spot that a more talented, serious professor...

Firstly, he has made his class the easy class. Secondly, he's using students for s__. Guys like that are good at gaming the system and generally deliver less value as...

"A couple of other girls came forward too." That suggests that his partners aren't all willing.

"He has reached out to some students I guess telling them what happened.

Someone, I assume my ex, has told them that I was responsible for him getting into trouble.

Now several people on my major think I’m a huge a__hole."

He's organized/instigated retaliation against you. You need to report this. Just in case he's angling/gaming to avoid firing,

the department should know he's a retaliator because that means that he really, really needs to go.

synesthesiah − NTA. It may be two consenting adults, but he was in an authoritative position over her.

Other girls came forward, which means there’s a history of him abusing his power as a prof to get laid. Not okay on campus.

You are TA for snooping, but you did it out of concern because her behaviour caused you concern.

A lesser evil than a prof possibly getting a big ego and thinking he can bang any student who falls into his web. You did the right thing.

A few users think the reporting stemmed from jealousy and could’ve been handled differently.

Low_end_the0ry − NTA - what he was doing was wrong. Abuse of power, especially if he was sleeping with current students.

Also he was married, so that’s fucked up for the wife too. You seemed to have acted out of jealousy and anger though, which is understandable.

I would’ve just broken up with her and tried to live my life. No need for all the extra drama.

Sucks you’re getting iced out tho. Just find a new friend group and try to put this all in the Past.

A user thinks that the reporting was private. It is the ex’s actions led to public drama and backlash.

GlitteringHair7 − NTA. Almost every school has a code of conduct that students and teachers should abide by,

and I have never heard of a school that didn't have something in place regarding faculty-student relationships. You DID handle it privately.

You emailed the dean and kept it between you two. Your ex is the one who most likely took it public.

This Redditor’s story is a masterclass in messy choices. Exposing a professor’s affair cost him friends but sparked justice.

Was reporting the fling a heroic stand against abuse of power, or did jealousy cloud his judgment?

How would you navigate betrayal when your social circle picks sides? Drop your thoughts below and weigh in on this campus drama!
