In the upcoming Mad Max prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Chris Hemsworth delves into the complexities of his character, Dementus, a post-apocalyptic warlord distinct from his iconic Marvel hero, Thor. Set two decades prior to the events of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the film shifts focus to Furiosa’s origin story, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, with Dementus emerging as a new addition to the franchise. Hemsworth, in conversation with Screen Rant, shares insights into his approach to the role, embracing the character’s charismatic yet brutal nature, drawing inspiration from real-life dictators to shape Dementus’ warlord persona.
“Yeah, it was really refreshing to have that opportunity. The charisma was a big thing that George talked about from day one, two years prior to shooting; the commonality between dictators and people in power who had amassed large followings [is that] there had to be an air of charisma. There had to be promise out of the suffering they were in and identification around, “I know who has caused your problems, and I know the solution. Follow me!” There needed to be some sort of fun and humor and joy and charisma in order to woo people into – not a false sense of security, but some sense of comfort. He needed to be enjoyable to be around.
And I think it also makes it a little more surprising when there is a brutal act or an act of violence if, just prior to that, you’ve sort of relaxed into an enjoyable statement. The unpredictable nature of it was what George was definitely after, what was on the page and what we kind of played with a lot. But it was so refreshing to do something different and do something that allowed me that opportunity. I love playing the superhero, but it does come with its limitations.”
Has Chris Hemsworth Ever Played the Role of a Villain?
While Dementus, the twisted wasteland warlord in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, may have something more sinister, Kevin is a good look at how Hemsworth can portray maniacal foes.
While Hemsworth has been a recognizable face in Hollywood since 2009 with his brief portrayal of Starfleet hero George Kirk in the opening moments of Star Trek, the actor has mostly played heroic roles. Having portrayed an ever-evolving take on Thor for thirteen years and joined numerous franchises, including Men in Black, Snow White & The Huntsman and, most recently,
Transformers, the actor has earned a reputation as a go-to performer for protagonists. One role that did allow Hemsworth to tap into villainy, however, came before one pre-Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
After all, in 2016’s Ghostbusters, he played the well-meaning but quite stupid Kevin, who ends up falling under the influence of the malevolent spirit of the movie‘s occult villain, Rowan North, at the beginning of the third act.
And it’s at that moment that Hemsworth takes what was a lovable character until that point and turns him into an absolute nuisance under the control of the movie’s antagonist, commanding both spirits and possessed entities in an exercise of power.
While there is a very good chance that Dementus, the wasteland warlord in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, will not be revealed as the movie’s outright villain, there is no denying that Hemsworth’s Kevin is a great glance at how the actor can play maniacal bad guys.
But Hemsworth did finally get to show off his best efforts as a cut-and-dried villain in 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale. In this thriller, he played Billy Lee, a charismatic yet sadistic cult leader who catches up with Dakota Johnson and Cailee Spaeny‘s characters. Though the character becomes more prominent in the last third of the movie, Hemsworth played him menacingly charismatic, showing his dark side. This probably wasn’t a far cry from his newest character,
Dementus, who also shares qualities as a villainous leader. Many things about Dementus’ design should remind audiences of many things about Thor, from his cape to his more regal apocalyptic attire and long flowing air. However, trailers for both Furiosa and Hemsworth’s descriptions make one clear: he is no benevolent heroic ruler.
From encouraging Furiosa to give into the brutality and cynicism the Wasteland brings to the way he can shift from calm and collected one minute to full of rage the next, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’s villain is the perfect foil for whom Taylor-Joy’s character will become. But audiences will have to wait and see whether Hemsworth’s warlord can leave a lasting impact on Furiosa.
