Summary:

  • DC Studios is taking the Green Lantern franchise in a new direction with “Lanterns,” an HBO Max series.
  • Inspired by “True Detective,” the series will focus on Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan solving Earth-based mysteries.
  • The writing team includes Emmy-winning Damon Lindelof, “Ozark” showrunner Chris Mundy, and comic writer Tom King.

While Greg Berlanti’s planned space opera Green Lantern series has been scrapped, DC Studios is taking the franchise in a thrilling new direction.

Co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn revealed a fresh vision for “Lanterns,” an HBO Max series that will swap the cosmic canvas for a more grounded approach. Inspired by the detective drama “True Detective,” “Lanterns” will focus on Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they tackle mysteries here on Earth.

This new series marks a significant departure from Berlanti’s vision, which aimed for a sprawling space opera featuring multiple Green Lanterns like Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz. While Berlanti’s project is no longer moving forward, it paves the way for a more focused narrative.

“Greg’s vision was more of a space opera that he wanted to do and our vision for it is a much more ‘True Detective,’ terrestrial-based investigation story,” Safran said during a presentation of the initial DCU slate in 2023.

The excitement doesn’t stop there! Emmy-winning writer Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “Watchmen“) has joined the writing team for “Lanterns,” adding his exceptional storytelling talents to the mix. Lindelof joins forces with “Ozark” showrunner Chris Mundy and comic book writer Tom King, who crafted the pilot script and series bible. With this powerhouse team on board, “Lanterns” promises to be a must-watch for fans of complex characters and gripping mysteries.

“Lanterns” isn’t just another superhero show. According to Safran, it plays a vital role in the overarching narrative of the DC Universe. The series will connect to upcoming DC films and television projects, making it a key piece of the puzzle.

The hunt for the actors to portray John Stewart and Hal Jordan is also underway. Safran emphasized the importance of these characters seamlessly transitioning between the television series and the big screen. The casting choices will undoubtedly be a major focus for DC Studios in the coming months.

While Berlanti’s Green Lantern project may not have come to fruition, DC Studios’ “Lanterns” is a cause for celebration. With a talented writing team, a focus on grounded storytelling, and its place within the DC Universe, “Lanterns” promises to be a fresh and exciting take on the Green Lantern mythos.
