Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has expressed his interest in portraying Batman in the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) film, “The Brave and the Bold.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Gyllenhaal acknowledged the prestige associated with the role: “Oh, man. That’s a classic. It’s an honor,” he said.
He also touched on the pressure that comes with taking on such an iconic character previously portrayed by other talented actors: “Speaking of playing roles that other incredible actors have played in the past…I’m intimidated by that.”
Gyllenhaal referenced his upcoming role as Iago in “Othello” alongside Denzel Washington, highlighting the weight of history associated with such characters.
“So that’s the first level,” Gyllenhaal continued. “That’s what I’m working on right now. But of course, it would be an honor always [to play Batman]. Those types of things and those roles are classics.”
This isn’t Gyllenhaal’s first brush with the Batman mantle. He was reportedly considered for the role in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins,” ultimately losing out to Christian Bale.
The Brave and the Bold” is being directed by Andy Muschietti, with a script penned by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Grant Morrison. DC Studios head James Gunn has described the film as “the introduction of the DCU Batman.” Unlike recent superhero origin stories, this film will draw inspiration from the 2006 comic book arc “Batman and Son” by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert.
The story follows Bruce Wayne as he discovers he has a son, Damian, with Talia al Ghul, daughter of his archenemy Ra’s al Ghul. Gunn has offered some hints about the film’s direction, describing Damian Wayne as “a little son of a bitch” and suggesting a potentially older Batman compared to a younger Superman.
Casting details for “The Brave and the Bold” are yet to be announced, but Gyllenhaal’s comments certainly add him to the list of potential actors for the coveted role.
