Couple Says Wedding Venue Canceled Their Booking After Realizing They Were Two Brides

Wedding planning comes with plenty of stress, but most couples do not expect their venue to disappear after accepting their money and confirming their date. When that happens immediately after an uncomfortable second meeting, it can be difficult not to wonder what changed.

This Redditor had already signed a contract with a scenic venue in Tennessee when she brought her fiancée to see it for the first time. The owners suddenly seemed cold, rushed the tour, and barely acknowledged them.

Not long afterward, an email claimed their wedding date had been double booked and canceled the agreement without offering another option.

The venue then stopped responding altogether. What she uncovered while researching its history made the situation feel even less accidental. Read on to decide whether she is connecting the dots correctly.

A bride suspects her venue canceled the wedding after meeting her female fiancée

'AIO- My wedding venue ghosted me and voided my contract after discovering who my partner is?'

Hi Reddit! Using a throwaway because I am fairly active in local threads on my main account.

I (26F) recently got engaged to my fiancée (25F), and we've been planning our wedding.

We live in the south in a pretty conservative state, so unfortunately we've dealt with our fair share of homophobia over the years.

A newer local wedding venue came highly recommended online, so I scheduled a tour.

My fiancée couldn't attend because of work, so I went alone. The tour itself went well.

Looking back, though, the owner came across as a little pushy and he made me slightly uncomfortable.

I brushed it off because the property was beautiful, had amazing views of the Smoky Mountains, and seemed like exactly what we wanted.

We moved forward with the booking process.

We both signed the contract, paid the required fees, and everything seemed completely normal.

For context, my fiancée has a very gender-neutral name, so nothing in the paperwork necessarily indicated we were a same-s__ couple.

I later scheduled a second tour so she could actually see the venue.

This is where things get odd.

The owner and his wife were noticeably cold.

They rushed us through the tour, barely spoke to us, and the wife wouldn't even make eye contact with either of us.

It was awkward enough that we both noticed it.

A short time later, I got an email saying our wedding date had suddenly been "double booked"

and that our contract was now null and void, effective immediately.

I replied asking if there had been some mistake or if another date was available…nothing.

I followed up again, still nothing. They completely ghosted us.

My fiancée thinks we should just move on, cut our losses, and book somewhere else.

We actually have a tour next week with another venue that's openly LGBTQ+ friendly, so I'm hopeful that'll work out.

Out of curiosity, I started researching this venue more.

I won't name them for legal reasons, but they're located in Cosby, TN.

I also found out they're banned from LGBTQ+-friendly wedding platforms like The Knot (the red flags were right there I suppose).

What really surprised me was that despite having a whopping FORTY ONE five-star reviews,

I found multiple stories from other same-s__ couples describing almost the exact same experience we had.

We aren't the first couple this has happened to, and from what I found, we're not even the TENTH.

Now I'm wondering if I'm connecting dots that aren't actually there, or if this is as obvious as it feels.

Is it possible the date really was double booked?

Sure. But the timing, everything being fine until they met us together, their behavior during that second tour,

then immediately voiding our contract and refusing to communicate, feels like too much to be a coincidence.

So... am I overreacting for thinking they canceled our wedding because we're a same s__ couple?

From a third-person perspective, the couple’s suspicion appears grounded in the sequence of events rather than a single uncomfortable interaction. The venue welcomed the initial inquiry, accepted a signed contract, and received payment without issue.

Because the fiancée’s gender-neutral name did not clearly indicate that it was a same-sex wedding, there was little reason for the owners to know the nature of the relationship at that stage. The atmosphere reportedly changed only after both women attended a second tour together.

They noticed the owners’ markedly colder demeanor, the visit felt rushed, and eye contact was noticeably avoided.

Shortly afterward, they were informed that their wedding date had supposedly been double-booked, their contract was immediately voided, and subsequent attempts to communicate were ignored.

Standing alone, any one of those events might have an innocent explanation. Together, they understandably prompted questions.

Another perspective is that coincidence is always possible. Businesses can accidentally double-book dates, experience scheduling errors, or decide they are unable to fulfill a contract for reasons unrelated to a customer’s identity.

It would be unfair to state with certainty that discrimination occurred based solely on circumstantial evidence.

However, context matters. When the couple later discovered multiple accounts from other same-sex couples describing strikingly similar experiences at the same venue, the situation became less about one isolated cancellation and more about whether a consistent pattern might exist.

Patterns deserve attention, even when they do not constitute definitive proof.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and other civil rights agencies have long recognized that discriminatory intent is often inferred from patterns of conduct rather than explicit admissions.

In many discrimination investigations, decision-makers rarely announce biased motives openly; instead, investigators examine timing, consistency of explanations, comparative treatment of similarly situated individuals, and repeated complaints to determine whether a broader pattern exists.

While every situation must be evaluated on its own facts, repeated reports can provide important context when assessing whether concerns are reasonable.

That perspective helps explain why the couple’s reaction does not seem like an overreaction. They are not claiming to possess irrefutable evidence or demanding certainty. Rather, they are noticing a sequence that aligns with experiences reportedly described by numerous other couples.

Human beings naturally look for patterns, and when independent stories resemble one another in meaningful ways, it is reasonable to wonder whether they reflect something more than coincidence.

At the same time, the fiancée’s instinct to move forward also has practical wisdom. Even if discrimination did occur, a wedding is one of the most important days of a couple’s life.

Spending months negotiating with or celebrating at, a venue where they no longer feel genuinely welcome would likely add unnecessary stress to an occasion that should be joyful.

Choosing an openly LGBTQ+-affirming venue is not simply about avoiding conflict; it is about surrounding themselves with vendors who are enthusiastic about celebrating their relationship rather than merely tolerating it.

Ultimately, the couple is not overreacting by questioning what happened. They are responding to a combination of changed behavior, abrupt contract cancellation, lack of communication, and reports from other couples that appear remarkably similar.

Whether those circumstances would ultimately prove discrimination is a separate question. But feeling unsettled by that pattern is a reasonable human response. Sometimes the absence of a clear explanation speaks almost as loudly as words themselves.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors urged public reviews to warn others and expose the venue

Accurate_Culture7651 − I know exactly what venue you’re talking about!

I would def post a review. don’t let others go down the same “trail” just to be ghosted!

Due-Yoghurt4916 − Honest reviews save others from heart break

quickwitqueen − You absolutely should post a review. Hell, name and shame them here.

R__ist, bigots, xenophobia, homophobes, etc. deserve no success.

Hausmannlife_Schweiz − Name them, there is no legal reason NOT to name them.

Bring all the bad publicity you can on top of these AHs.

This group focused on recovering the deposit and exploring discrimination claims

ComprehensiveWeek428 − NOR-They should at least refund you their fees…

if it’s a homophobia thing they can’t possibly hold onto your deposit legally.

kissmestepbr0 − You are NOR by a long shot. That venue is completely unprofessional and glaringly h__ophobic.

Leave a 1 star review. Share your experience with them and feel free to name the place.

I'm not sure if you could do anything legally, but I honestly suggest looking into discrimination laws in your state

Conscious-Card5611 − NOR Please clarify for us whether they kept any money that you had given them when they canceled your contract?

These users suggested testing availability and identifying whether it was a known venue

CommunityGlittering2 − have a friend call and ask if that date is available

Jollikay − NOR, and I have seen a venue in TN get slammed for this, and I wonder if it’s the same one

This commenter advised walking away rather than trusting the venue with the wedding

MovieLazy6576 − Why do you want to give them your money?

Even if you could force them into letting you have your wedding there how do you trust them to not sabotage it in someway?

My son is Gay and I hope to pay for his wedding someday.

It sucks that people like this exist but I wouldn’t want my money to go to their business and would just move on especially in Tennessee.

You might inadvertently get them a lot of support in the Bible Belt you live in.

Do you think the timing points toward discrimination, or could this genuinely have been an unfortunate scheduling mistake?
