Coworker Spread Gossip About Their Living Situation, So They Got Revenge With A Fake Rumor

Some coworkers think they can make fun of others without any consequences, but one Redditor found the perfect way to turn the tables when a dishie at her kitchen job started slandering her. After discovering she was living in a tent due to the skyrocketing housing market, he began making snide comments and offering to “lend” her his bed.

But instead of letting the jabs slide, she decided to retaliate in the most unexpected way: spreading a rumor that they’d slept together. The result? His girlfriend found out, and a massive fight broke out. Needless to say, he never spoke to her again. Was this petty revenge, or was it just what he deserved? Keep reading to see how this kitchen drama unfolded.

A worker gets revenge on a coworker who spreads personal info by spreading a false rumor

'Coworker slandered me so I got revenge...?'

I was working in a kitchen doing some casual work mostly food preparation. Crappy job tbh.

Anyway one of the dishies found out that I was living in a tent. (House prices are out of control)

And spread it around work telling everyone and started making snide comments to me in front of others like offering to lend me his bed wink wink.

So I started telling people that he was just mad at me because I stopped sleeping with him.(we never did lol).

Eventually someone told his gf and they had a big fight over it 😂. He never spoke to me again

In a world where personal boundaries can often be blurred, especially in close-knit work environments, slander can feel like a deep violation. In this situation, OP was subjected to humiliation when a coworker, a “dishie” in the kitchen, discovered their living situation and spread it around the workplace.

Living in a tent, particularly due to rising housing costs, is already a personal and often stigmatized experience. Yet, it wasn’t just the living arrangement that was shared, this coworker’s snide comments crossed a line, invading OP’s privacy and making them the subject of ridicule.

It’s easy to understand why OP felt betrayed by these actions. The embarrassment of having such a private detail exposed to the entire workplace, coupled with the belittling remarks, would have triggered a deep sense of shame and anger.

As humans, our need for dignity is a fundamental part of our psychological makeup. When that dignity is stripped away in such a public and demeaning manner, the instinct to fight back becomes overwhelming.

Psychologically speaking, revenge often stems from a desire for justice, or more precisely, to regain control over a situation where one feels powerless. For OP, the initial emotional response was likely anger, a deep frustration at being wronged and a desperate need to reassert their self-worth.

As Dr. Robert Cialdini, a renowned social psychologist, explains, revenge is a mechanism to restore balance when we feel an injustice has been done to us.

In this case, OP wasn’t just getting back at their coworker for the slander; they were attempting to right a perceived wrong in a way that would reestablish their sense of respect and fairness in the workplace.

By spreading a humorous, albeit damaging, rumor about the coworker, that he was angry because OP had “stopped sleeping with him,” OP cleverly flipped the narrative. In this small act of malicious compliance, the coworker’s reputation was tarnished, and the balance of power was momentarily restored.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

This group backed the OP for standing their ground

[Reddit User] − Raise the temperature by sending an apology to his gf lol

Ratlochet1472 − If he can't take it, he shouldn't dish it out. I hope you're in a better place now, OP.

Common_Chester − I can't for the life of me understand this mindset. I had a prep cook who I found out was homeless.

I thought him everything I knew about how to be a cook.

When he was ready I found him a decent job and helped him get an apt. He now has a nice GF and a normal life.

These commenters enjoyed the karma of the situation, emphasizing that the coworker brought it on themselves by spreading gossip

dmitrineilovich − Well done! Don't start none, won't be none!

Turtle_167 − F__k around (or not) find out haha

Grateful-Jed − MF brought a knife to a gun fight.

This group discussed the nuances of slander, pointing out that truth can’t be slander

Laurag68 − While what your coworker did was wrong by spreading gossip, slander is a legal term.

Someone can’t slander you if what they are saying is true.

Kamikazisqurl − Poor baby. Loves a joke until he’s the b__t of one. Lol

forever_single_now − You can send her a kit for paternity test if he tries to take revenge.

Guess whatever he said to convince her it’s fake might be questioned if you are willing to go that far ;)

These commenters celebrated OP’s actions

Proud-Cat-Mom-2021 − Coworker more than had that one coming. Don't do unto others what you wouldn't want done to you put into practice. Well done.

Chess42 − It’s not slander if it’s true

DynkoFromTheNorth − Please tell me they broke up.

These commenters appreciated the strategy behind the situation

[Reddit User] − If he can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Literally.

Expensive-Change-266 − Telling the truth can’t be slander. You just don’t like he told people.

Effective-Several − Well played indeed.

Was the OP justified in taking revenge, or did they go too far with their fabrication? While the coworker certainly had it coming for slandering OP, could there have been a more mature way to handle the situation?
