Cyclist Accuses Black Student of Stealing His Bike, Then Finds the Missing Lock in His Own Bag

Getting accused of stealing something is unsettling enough, but being physically shoved before you even understand what is happening takes the situation to another level. Sometimes a misunderstanding becomes so absurd that the person making the accusation ends up exposing their own mistake.

The OP was on the way to college when they stopped in the street to answer an important phone call from a company where they had interviewed the previous day. While celebrating the news that they had gotten the job, an angry cyclist approached and shoved them aside.

The cyclist claimed the OP had been trying to steal his expensive bike, which was leaning against a nearby streetlight.

The OP was completely confused and stayed put while the police were called, despite insisting they had been on the phone the entire time. Then, while waiting, the cyclist discovered something that changed the entire situation. Scroll down to see what happened.

A college student’s phone call turns tense when a cyclist accuses him of bike theft

not the actual photo

'No, I wasn't trying to steal your bike'

On the way to college, I stopped in the street to take a call from a place where I had been interviewed the day before.

I was chatting away (yay, got the job) about the start day (I had to delay until later next week to get a couple of things done)

when an angry guy in lycra walks up to me and shoves me (not hard, but it was quite a shock, so I stepped back).

I am trying not to sound crazy on the phone to my new boss and shaking my head at lycra guy.

He's smaller than me, yellow and black lycra, helmet that makes his head look like an Alien from Aliens. Smooth, elongated.

I am trying to wave at this guy, but he's shouting at me. Just behind me is a street light with a bike leaning against it.

He pushes me out of the way and I'm still on the phone, trying to end the call without sounding mental.

For a moment, I figured that I had accidentally leaned against his goddam bike, but no, I am at least a foot away.

Lycra guy is shouting now - this actually saves me - I tell my new boss that there is too much noise and I will call him later - he...

'What the hell is wrong with you?' Lycra Guy now shouts. 'What TF - why are you pushing me?'. 'You tried to steal my bike'.

I am struggling to explain that I was on the phone and WHY would I take a call if I was in the middle of a theft?

'Where's the lock?' This is now what he is fixated on, because apparently it cost a couple of hundred bucks. Lycra Guy is now calling the police.

I would have walked away but I didn't want to get into trouble for trying to evade the 5-0 (it does not help that I am black and he is...

So, I am still trying to explain and we wait. He's standing close, like I will run.

I keep asking him where my tools are, where I've thrown this lock that he think I've broken. I tell him I was talking to my new boss. Nothing.

A couple of mins later, he unshoulders his rucksack and goes into for something - and finds his stupid lock.

He pulls it out. We look at the bike without a lock. We look at the lock. Then back to the bike.

He just gets onto the bike, tells me to move out of the way and rides off.. Not a word of anything.

Being accused of something you didn’t do is frustrating enough. Being physically shoved, publicly confronted, and then forced to wait for the situation to resolve while the other person discovers they were mistaken can leave a much deeper sense of disbelief.

The OP’s experience wasn’t simply an awkward misunderstanding. It involved an accusation escalating into physical contact before the basic facts had even been established.

The emotional core is easy to understand. The OP was already having an important, positive moment, speaking with a potential employer after receiving a job offer. Suddenly, that ordinary phone call was interrupted by a stranger who apparently believed the OP was stealing his bicycle.

Instead of asking what was happening, the cyclist shoved him and demanded to know where the lock was. The OP then had to remain at the scene while the cyclist contacted police, partly because walking away could have been interpreted as suspicious. When the cyclist finally found the missing lock inside his own backpack, he simply rode away without acknowledging what had happened.

There is an interesting psychological element here: once the cyclist decided that the OP was a thief, almost every subsequent detail appears to have been interpreted as supporting that conclusion.

The OP’s presence beside the bicycle became suspicious. The missing lock became evidence. Even his attempts to explain himself apparently failed to interrupt the narrative. This is a form of confirmation bias, where people tend to notice and interpret information in ways that reinforce an existing belief.

Psychologist and Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman’s research on judgment under uncertainty helps explain why people can become remarkably confident in an incorrect interpretation.

Human beings frequently make rapid assessments using mental shortcuts, then struggle to revise those judgments once they have formed. Kahneman’s work on cognitive biases and decision-making is summarized by the Nobel Prize.

That makes the cyclist’s behavior particularly revealing. He apparently moved from “this person is near my bicycle” to “this person tried to steal my bicycle” without establishing the crucial facts in between. Once that assumption took hold, the missing lock seemed to confirm it. The irony is that the missing evidence was literally inside his own backpack.

There is another layer that shouldn’t be ignored. The OP mentions being Black while the cyclist was white and describes feeling reluctant to leave because of concerns about how the encounter might be interpreted by police.

That doesn’t establish what motivated the cyclist, but it explains why the OP experienced the situation as more than an annoying misunderstanding. Being accused of theft by a stranger can carry different consequences depending on how others perceive the people involved.

The cyclist’s failure to apologize is arguably the most revealing part of the ending. People make mistakes. Someone can become frightened, jump to the wrong conclusion, and still recover gracefully once they discover the truth. A simple “I’m sorry, I got the wrong idea” would have changed the emotional ending completely.

Instead, he found his lock, looked at the bicycle, told the OP to move, and left.

That response can feel almost more insulting than the original accusation because it offers no acknowledgment of the disruption he caused. The OP didn’t need a dramatic apology or compensation. He needed recognition that he had been wrongly accused and shoved.

The useful lesson is simple: certainty is not the same thing as evidence. When something looks suspicious, taking ten seconds to establish what actually happened can prevent an embarrassing misunderstanding from becoming something much more serious.

And in this case, the missing lock wasn’t evidence of a crime. It was evidence that the cyclist should have checked his backpack first.

Check out how the community responded:

These cyclists mocked the entitled behavior that gives their hobby a bad reputation

That_Ol_Cat − Op, I'm a cyclist myself. I find these types to be the most embarrassing members of my hobby.

Entitled, riding on busy roads holding up traffic,

enraged when a car come too close to them riding three abreast, securing their expensive bikes where they inconvenience the most people.

On behalf of cyclists everywhere with an ounce of sense, my sincere apologies for your experience.

Narrow_Maximum7 − I have never, ever, met a man that wears lycra that is a nearly balanced person. Not even once.

Fair_Satisfaction487 − I am a cyclist and have had groups of these toolboxes ride by giving me sneering looks when I wave hi.

I am on a mountain bike wearing normal clothes

and you are sneering at me in a spandex body condom suit with your sperm shaped alien helmet and white sunglasses 😶😶😶

These commenters slammed him for refusing to apologize after realizing he was wrong

Bane444 − What a jerk! He probably felt like it to after he found his lock. Just move on with your day. Congratulations on the job though.

FurnitureComesW-Home − What an absolute r__ist d__che bag. Can’t even say sorry after he finds his own lock. Plus, those alien helmets are obnoxious.

These Redditors believed the assault should have been reported and police involved

Not-a-Cranky-Panda − I hope you reported the a__ault.

Wakemeup3000 − Should have made him wait for the police to arrive.

Or made him take a video of himself explaining that his lock was in his backpack and nobody was trying to take his bike.

kilowattcommando − "No, we're waiting for the police. " Sounds like he assaulted you without cause or provocation. ..

These users admitted the cyclist’s behavior made retaliation feel tempting

SolarisWesson − I would have been soon tempted to just push him over when said to move put of the way

Distantstallion − I might have kicked the back wheel, not like he can get off with the twat shoes they wear

Was the student right to stay put until the mystery was solved? Should he have insisted on waiting for police after the lock appeared? And was the accusation merely panic, or did something deeper influence that snap judgment?
