Dad Asks for 10 Minutes With His Newborn Before Cooking, His Postpartum Wife Says He Doesn’t Care

Sleep deprivation, newborn care, and work responsibilities can turn even small misunderstandings into major conflicts.

According to this Redditor, he has been doing everything he can to support his family after the birth of their second child. Between working from home, caring for their older son, cooking, cleaning, and helping with diaper changes, he feels stretched thin but committed to making life easier for his recovering wife.

Trouble started when she asked him to prepare a protein-rich breakfast. He happily agreed but asked if he could spend ten more minutes enjoying a rare quiet moment with her and the baby. Instead of bringing them closer, that request sparked an emotional disagreement neither of them saw coming.

'AITAH for asking to chill for 10 minutes when my postpartum wife was hungry?'

First, some background. We had a baby one week ago today.

We made some agreements before the birth which were basically all her idea and I went along with them to keep the peace.

She is taking her Maternity leave now and when it runs out, I will take my leave next.

This will give us more time at home with the baby. During this period I am taking care of our 4 year old 100% of the time.

I'm making his meals, doing bath time, bringing him to summer camp, etc.

I don't mind this as I was the primary care for him before too because my job allows more time at home too.

On top of that I'm taking care of all household chores like laundry, dishes, cooking etc.

Whenever a baby diaper needs changed, I'm on it too, I'm pitching in as much as I can with the baby as well.

Honestly I feel like I am doing a lot and none of it bothers me, I'm not complaining, I'm in dad mode.

I spent fathers day giving her a break to sleep and taking the kids out for groceries and errands.

I work from home, and here lies the biggest issue.

I feel as if my wife has never really respected my work time as actual work time and I am constantly asked to do things for her or around the...

I try to accommodate as much as I can too because I do have some freedom with my day, I'm not in meetings all day.

When she was working and I was too, I was always expected to drop whatever I was doing for everything,

like picking up our sick kid from school or staying home with him all day because he has the day off.

In her eyes, I'm already home so I am the one that has to do it.

Naturally, 4 year olds are a lot of work and need a lot of attention, so my work always suffers these days, but again, dad mode and I push through.

One of our frequent arguments we have is about her micromanaging me. I'm exhausted by it.

I can't remember the last time I did something right without being told to do it another way or do something else.

I hold the baby wrong, I picked the wrong shoes for my kid to wear to school,

I should be driving in the other lane, I can't even park the car in the garage correctly in her eyes.

God forbid I don't immediately jump up in excitement to do whatever task she is currently demanding I do.

This brings us to this morning. When getting my kid ready for his day, I made oatmeal for everyone.

He ate and I gave a bowl to my wife and I brought him to camp.

After I got home I got straight to work, I was already running behind.

I ended up working on my laptop in my car for a while in front of our house

because I had to jump on a call and couldn't make them wait another 5 minutes to set up in the house.

When that wrapped up about 2 hours have passed since she had her oatmeal.

I went upstairs to see how she and the baby are doing and laid next to them to chill and touch the baby.

I'm not on break or lunch or anything, I just had about 20 min between stuff and wanted to hangout for a bit with them, babies are cute.

She asked if I can make her an omelette because she wants protein.

I said "Sure, can I just chill for 10 minutes with you guys?" she nodded

and I was just kind of touching the baby and seeing her and within 2 minutes

she asked in an angry voice "can you make it now?" so I got up, a bit frustrated and made the omelette.

This turned into a big fight. I decided to try to give her some grace, I know she's going through a lot, she just had a baby.

I calmed down, didn't say anything and made a bomb omelette with spinach and ham and cheese.

When I brought it to her, she got mad and said she doesn't want it anymore and told me to throw it out.

I brought it back downstairs, didn't say a word and did the dishes, saved the omelette and went back to work.

I saw this as a battle not worth fighting right now.

An hour later she came down and I offered her the food again, since I saved it for her.

She told me I was being an a__hole, she made her own food and told me I never have to make her food again because "I obviously didn't want to."

I tried to talk about waht happened and it just turned into a discussion about how "I'm always the victim" and "I'm to sensitive.". Idk, I'm tired ya'll. AITAH?

The first weeks after a baby arrives can transform ordinary conversations into emotional flashpoints. A request for breakfast is rarely just about breakfast.

Behind it may be exhaustion, physical recovery, interrupted sleep, shifting identities, financial pressure, and two people trying to care for a growing family while both feeling they are carrying more than anyone realizes.

From the husband’s perspective, the frustration did not begin with the omelet. He described taking responsibility for the older child, household chores, diaper changes, and balancing all of it with a job that still demanded his attention.

Working from home often creates the illusion that a person is always available, even when they are actively working.

After completing a morning of parenting and meetings, asking to spend ten quiet minutes with his wife and newborn before making another meal did not sound like a refusal to help. He agreed immediately and simply wanted a brief moment to reconnect with his family.

From the wife’s perspective, however, the request may have landed very differently. One week after giving birth, many women are recovering from significant physical stress while coping with sleep deprivation, hormonal changes, pain, and the constant demands of feeding and caring for a newborn.

Research from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists emphasizes that the postpartum period is a time of substantial physical and emotional adjustment, making responsive support especially important.

When someone is hungry, physically depleted, and caring for a newborn, even a short delay can feel much longer than it objectively is.

Neither experience cancels out the other. The difficulty is that both partners appear to feel unseen. He feels that his work and caregiving are consistently undervalued, while she may feel that her recovery and immediate needs are not fully understood.

Psychologist Dr. John Gottman has found that many relationship conflicts are not solved by proving who is objectively right, but by recognizing the emotions underneath each person’s position.

Couples who successfully navigate stress tend to acknowledge each other’s realities before debating solutions.

That context also helps explain why the argument escalated after the omelet was finished. Once the conversation shifted from food to accusations such as “you obviously didn’t want to” and “you’re always the victim,” the disagreement became about long-standing feelings rather than a single interaction.

Likewise, his decision to quietly make the meal, save it, and offer it again later reflected an attempt to de-escalate, but it did not address the emotional misunderstanding that had already taken hold.

The strongest takeaway is that this story is less about an omelet than about two exhausted parents operating at the edge of their emotional reserves. New parenthood often magnifies existing communication patterns, including feelings of being micromanaged, unappreciated, or unsupported.

The healthiest path forward is not deciding whose ten minutes mattered more, but finding ways for both partners to feel cared for without assuming the other person’s request is evidence of selfishness.

In the earliest days of raising a newborn, empathy is often as necessary as sleep, and both can be in very short supply.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters urged both parents to rest, calm down, and avoid escalating a one-week postpartum argument

ReasonableCookie9369 − Naps for the whole house, and if that doesnt fix it, counseling.

shyfidelity − You think AITAH is the place to litigate an argument between you and your wife?

And you had a whole baby a week ago? Get off the computer and take a nap, dude

ButterflyDestiny − Its only been a week. Delete this and makeup and sleep. Dont have strangers shitting on your wife man.

smalls603- − If this behaviour was there before the baby was born, there is an issue.

If this post baby, everyone take a breath and chill (just not in front of her)

These Redditors said the wife’s recent behavior may be linked to postpartum hormones or depression

CakePhool − If she was like this before the baby then it is norm and you should question if this the life you want.

But if this is new, keep an eye out because that can be the start of postpartum depression.

EagleEyezzzzz − No a**holes here. Your wife is ONE WEEK postpartum, and maybe breastfeeding too.

The hormonal crash she is experiencing is unlike anything you can imagine. She's fricking starving and feels insane man, just help her out.

At this point, she isn't the a__hole for anything minor like this. Just try to do what you can to help her whenever you can.

If that means cooking an omelete instead of lounging with the baby, that's what you gotta do.

These users warned that constant criticism and micromanagement require couples counseling

Internal_Praline_658 − Dude, nobody can live like this.

I don’t like the way my husband folds towels or loads the dishwasher and you know what? I don’t say a f__king thing.

I’m sure I do things he doesn’t like. We’re a team.

I know it doesn’t matter how the towels are folded-folded is good enough. Yall need counseling and you both may need individual counseling.

If you’re not already boiling with resentment you will be soon enough.

The_ADD_PM − I am confused why you choose to have another baby with this woman when you clearly have major issues to work out.

If I felt that micromanage and disrespected by my partner I would have started couples counseling before I would even consider having a second baby.

You guys need to go to counseling so you can have some support and learn to communicate more effectively with each other.

These commenters questioned why the couple had another child before resolving major relationship problems

QueenBoleyn − why would you have another kid if she's such a nightmare?

I'll never understand why people think having another one when you can barely handle the first is a good idea.

Rumorhashit − The only thing that sticks out to me is that you go along with decisions just to keep the peace.

That's not really fair. How can someone know your boundaries when you don't tell the truth about what you want. I think this will breed resentment.

Do you think asking for ten minutes was reasonable under the circumstances, or should immediate postpartum needs always take priority? How should couples balance compassion for recovery with the realities of work, parenting, and mutual respect? Share your thoughts below!
