Beyond acting, Dawn Wells was known for her charitable efforts. In the 1990s, she launched Wishing Wells Collections, a clothing line designed for the elderly and disabled, which aimed to provide stylish, accessible clothing for those in need. “Why shouldn’t the elderly, who have no one, be treated as the young people they were 30 years ago?” she asked, emphasizing the importance of self-esteem and dignity for older adults.
Wells also founded the Idaho Film and Television Institute, helping to foster the arts in her home state. She was actively involved in various charitable causes throughout her life, including teaching acting classes and supporting numerous nonprofit organizations.

Dawn Wells passed away in December 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. Even in her final years, Wells remained a charitable spirit. Her obituary invited donations to causes close to her heart, including the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and the Shambala Preserve in California.
Following her death, many of her colleagues and friends paid tribute to Wells. Tina Louise, who played Ginger on Gilligan’s Island, and Drema Denver, widow of series star Bob Denver, praised Wells for her kindness and positivity. Drema remembered Wells as “a fun, inquisitive, curious, wonderful person.” It’s clear that Wells shared much of the same warm-hearted nature as her character, Mary Ann, leaving behind a legacy of joy and kindness that extended far beyond the small screen.
