Employee Gives Up Being Available 24/7, and His Boss Suddenly Calls Him “More Efficient”

Working harder does not always mean getting ahead, even though many employees are taught to believe the opposite.

Staying late, answering messages after hours, and constantly taking on extra tasks can look like dedication, but sometimes it only teaches a workplace that your time is endlessly available.

One Redditor learned that lesson after spending years as the person who always did more than expected, yet kept getting passed over for advancement.

After one disappointment too many, they stopped overextending themselves and began sticking to normal hours, clearer boundaries, and fewer unnecessary responsibilities.

Instead of hurting their reputation, the change produced a result they never saw coming.

Their boss suddenly praised their focus, efficiency, and growth, then backed those words up with something much more concrete.

Scroll down to see why the poster was left questioning everything they thought they knew about getting ahead at work.

An overlooked employee stops overworking after years of being denied a promotion

not the actual photo

'I got a raise after I started leaving exactly at 5pm and my boss is acting like I've "stepped up my game"?'

For years I was the office try-hard - first one in, last to leave, answering

emails at midnight, and taking on everyone else's problems. I asked for a

promotion three times and kept getting the "we see your potential, just need to wait for the right timing" speech.

Last month I hit my breaking point after being passed over again for

someone who'd been there half as long but played golf with the VP. I

decided I was done k__ling myself for this place. I started working strictly 9-

5, turning off email notifications after hours, and saying "no" to last-minute requests that weren't my responsibility.

The weirdest thing happened. My boss called me in yesterday and gave me

a 15% raise "for showing such impressive growth in prioritization and

efficiency." He actually said I'm "more focused and delivering higher quality work" than ever before.

I'm completely baffled. Everything I thought would get me ahead

(overworking, being available 24/7) actually worked against me, and now

that I've stopped trying so hard, suddenly I'm promotion material? Corporate logic makes zero sense.

TLDR: After years of overworking with no recognition, I started setting

boundaries and working less hours, and now my boss thinks I'm performing better and gave me a raise.

Many hardworking people eventually discover an uncomfortable truth: being endlessly available does not guarantee that others will value them more.

Sometimes it simply teaches everyone that their extra labor is free. That seems to be what happened to this employee.

For years, they arrived early, stayed late, answered midnight emails, and absorbed problems belonging to other people, believing extraordinary effort would eventually translate into advancement.

After being overlooked yet again, they stopped sacrificing their personal life. Ironically, that was when management finally noticed an improvement.

Emotionally, the story carries more than workplace frustration. The employee had repeatedly received vague promises about “potential” while watching someone with stronger personal connections advance faster.

That can create a painful cycle: rejection encourages greater effort, greater effort becomes expected, and eventually exceptional availability stops looking exceptional.

By switching to a strict schedule and declining unrelated emergencies, the employee was not necessarily becoming less committed. They were finally separating important responsibilities from noise.

There is another explanation for the boss’s surprising reaction. Constantly saying yes can unintentionally hide judgment and prioritization skills.

If someone accepts every assignment, coworkers may see reliability, but they may also see a person who never decides what deserves attention.

Once this employee started protecting their time, the work that remained received more concentration.

From management’s perspective, fewer visible hours may therefore have produced clearer priorities and stronger results.

That helps make the apparent “corporate logic” less mysterious. The employee did not simply work less; they changed how their limited attention was distributed.

Still, the 15% raise does not erase years of being overlooked, and the employee would be wise to remember that.

Their new approach is worth protecting rather than treating the raise as an invitation to resume midnight emails.

The strangest lesson here may be the most useful one: professionalism is not measured by how completely someone allows a job to consume them.

Sometimes becoming more selective with effort is exactly what makes that effort visible.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors thought cutting low-value work made the employee look more focused and productive

MiyoMush − Ive seen this before. My theory is sometimes people who are

over working, staying late, always hustling give the mistaken appearance

they are always behind, catching up at last minute, o__rwhelmed, can’t keep up.

iamhefty − To me it looks like the extra tasks you were doing were either

not much value or not your role. You are now more focused on what you need to do. It makes sense

OverFix4201 − IMO you were bogged down in pointless s__t. In office

environment if you ignore every email and every ask about 50% will resolve itself without your involvement.

tbjamies − I totally get this! Setting boundaries actually made them value

your work more. It's weird how companies sometimes reward the people

who protect their time and energy instead of those burning themselves

out. Sounds like your boss finally saw your true productivity when you

weren't stretched thin. This happens more often than people realize sometimes doing less but higher quality work is the key.

Glad you got that raise you deserved!

This group believed management feared losing a strong employee and used rewards to keep them

Tight_Bug_2848 − Sounds like they’re afraid you’re going to quit lol

urbisOrbis − Your boss noticed a new pattern. A pattern that usually ends

with a great employee leaving. This move they made was to keep you from getting a new job.

Ucinorn − Your manager noticed you stopped giving a s__t, and is afraid to

lose you. So they are giving you incentive to stay. Management only cares

when you are not performing, or obviously looking elsewhere. It's very clear when an employee is not happy.

They will take action then if they want to keep you, but if you are keen and happy to burn yourself out they won't stop you

Sirbunbun − There’s a chance they think you’re gonna leave. But generally

an employee with better focus and boundaries is happier and more productive, so it could also be that.

Physical_Ad5135 − Potentially too they can tell you are on the brink and want to keep you.

These commenters warned that constant overperformance only raises expectations and invites more unpaid work

Aggravating_Job_9490 − Overworking never pays off. All it does is creates

more work. Also when you’re too “good”’at something. You’re less likely to

be moved up in some cases. Congratulations! Never give too much to a companyZ Keep your schedule.

carkin − Your manager lied to you. Twice. They were happy with you giving

in 100% and playing you around for free. Now they see you quiet quitting

and they want you back. Hence the bonuses. Now don't make the same

mistake. Don't overdue it. Do your job and if it is not finish by 5. Too bad, real life begins at 5

After years of proving dedication through late nights and constant availability, the poster finally stopped sacrificing personal time, only to receive the recognition that overworking never earned.

The irony is hard to miss: stronger boundaries made their contributions more focused and visible, while endless extra effort had simply become expected.

That 15% raise certainly validates the change, even if the corporate logic feels backward.

Do you think the boss finally recognized genuine efficiency, or did setting boundaries change how the poster was perceived? Would this experience permanently change how you approach work?
