Employee Wins the Office Raffle, Then Gets Called Selfish for Keeping the Grand Prize

Winning a raffle is usually a moment to celebrate, not the start of workplace drama.

This Redditor says their company recently held a casual employee appreciation event featuring pizza, cupcakes, and a handful of raffle prizes.

Against the odds, they walked away with the biggest reward of the day: a high-quality ergonomic office chair. What should have been a fun surprise quickly turned awkward when a coworker with chronic back pain insisted she deserved the chair more and asked for it in front of everyone.

The refusal sparked an uncomfortable debate around fairness, compassion, and whether winning something means you’re obligated to give it away.

A coworker demands a raffle prize from a winner, creating tension over fairness and need

'Am I the jerk for refusing to give my coworker the office chair I won in a raffle?'

My job had this little employee appreciation thing last Friday.

Nothing crazy, just pizza, cheap cupcakes, and a raffle with random prizes.

Most of it was stuff like mugs and gift cards, but the big prize was a really nice ergonomic chair

that apparently used to be in a manager office before they remodeled. I won it.

My coworker immediately got weird about it because she has back pain and said she needed it more.

I do feel bad for her, but the chair was a raffle prize, not a medical accommodation.

I also work from home two days a week and my chair at home is terrible, so I was actually excited to take it.

I’ve been wanting to spend some money I made on Ѕtake on a new chair for myself for a while now.

She asked me in front of everyone if I would just give it to her. I laughed a little because I thought she was joking, but she wasn’t.

She said it was kind of selfish to keep it when she has actual pain.

I told her she should talk to HR if she needs a special chair, but I’m not giving away something I won fairly.

Now a few people at work are acting like I’m being cheap and dramatic over a chair. Am I the jerk?

Small moments can reveal big questions about fairness, kindness, and entitlement. Many people want to be compassionate when someone else is struggling, especially when the problem involves pain or a genuine need.

But compassion does not always mean giving away something that belongs to you. Sometimes the harder lesson is learning that two people can have valid feelings at the same time.

In this situation, the original poster was placed in an uncomfortable position where a simple workplace prize became a moral debate. The coworker’s back pain deserves empathy, and wanting a comfortable chair is understandable. However, the poster did not take something assigned to someone else or ignore a formal workplace need.

They entered a raffle, won a prize, and already had a personal reason for wanting it. The conflict developed because the coworker turned a random reward into a test of generosity, putting social pressure on the winner instead of addressing the actual workplace issue.

A different perspective is that the coworker may not have been thinking only about the chair itself. Chronic pain can make people feel desperate for solutions, and seeing a useful item go to someone who appears less physically affected may trigger frustration. She may have viewed the situation through the lens of need rather than ownership.

Still, that perspective does not give someone the right to decide that another person’s win is less legitimate. A workplace raffle is designed around chance, not a ranking system where the person with the greatest need automatically receives the prize.

Occupational health experts often emphasize that workplace equipment intended to address medical issues should come through proper workplace accommodation processes rather than informal arrangements between employees.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission explains that reasonable accommodations are adjustments made through an interactive process between an employee and employer, rather than relying on coworkers to personally solve accessibility needs.

Ergonomics specialists also note that appropriate workstation adjustments depend on an individual’s needs and working conditions, meaning a random chair may not necessarily be the correct solution for someone’s pain.

This perspective shows why the poster’s response was reasonable. Suggesting that the coworker speak with HR was not dismissive; it directed the problem toward the people responsible for workplace support. Giving away the chair might have been generous, but keeping it was not cruel.

The larger lesson is that kindness works best when it is voluntary. A favor loses its meaning when someone is pressured into providing it. People can acknowledge another person’s struggles without accepting responsibility for fixing every problem they encounter. A healthy workplace should encourage empathy, but it should also respect fairness and personal boundaries.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters said OP won the chair fairly and had no obligation to give it away

JCannaday3 − This is crazy. Take your chair home and ignore her.

Witchy_Craft − Nope, you’re not the jerk, you won it fair and square and under no obligation to give it to this coworker!

Like you said, she should go get her own or keep her mouth shut! Congratulations 🎊

Gold_Reference8247 − No way! What a nerve some people have!

derrynek − wtf i HATE people like this. so entitled

These Redditors suggested the coworker request an ergonomic accommodation through HR instead

ThatOneTrickTheyHate − NTJ. You won it, it's yours. If your coworker has a disability, she should speak to HR to request accommodations in the workplace.

dandelionlemon − NTJ, and I think you handled it perfectly.

She, ideally anyway, should be able to get herself an ergonomic chair via the workplace if she has back pain.

She really put you on the spot and I think she was very out of line.

jbenze − NTA and you are right, she should definitely talk to HR or the ergonomics person (if your company has one, my last 3 companies did).

This group criticized the coworker for publicly pressuring OP and putting them on the spot

Icy_Paper_8118 − Not only are you not the jerk for keeping something you won in a raffle.

I'd say your co-worker IS the jerk for asking you for the chair in front of everyone.

Gemfyre1 − Just wait until you win the lottery

Anceledon − It’s amazing how generous people are when it’s not their stuff.

What began as a simple employee appreciation event quickly became a conversation about fairness, workplace accommodations, and social pressure. While many sympathized with the coworker’s back pain, most readers believed that need did not automatically create an obligation for someone else to surrender a prize they had legitimately won.

If you won something valuable at work, would you give it away to a coworker who claimed they needed it more? Or should prizes and workplace accommodations remain two completely separate issues? Share your thoughts below!
