Trust is one of the most important foundations in a family, and once it is damaged, repairing it can be much harder than expected. Sometimes, the pain comes not from what happened, but from how someone’s actions make another person feel unwanted.

The original poster never expected her husband of 13 years to question whether their son was truly his. After he secretly requested a paternity test, she noticed a painful change in the way he treated their 12-year-old son.

While he became distant toward the boy, he seemed to grow even closer to their daughter, leaving the family dynamic deeply affected. When the test results finally arrived, the truth was revealed, but the damage had already been done. Read on to discover why an apology may not be enough to fix what happened.

A mother struggles to repair the damage after her husband’s paternity doubts push their son away

'My (43F) Husband (44) Demanded a paternity test for our teen son and became cold and distant towards him, while favoring our daughter. But now the test came back and...

I (43 Female) have been married to my husband (44) for 13 years, and we have 2 kids together a 14 year old daughter, and a 12 year old boy.

A few weeks ago, my husband came to me while our kids were at their aunt and uncle's house and he demanded a paternity test for our son.

I was shocked by his request and asked why, and he didn't say anything, just asked for the test again,

I told him I never cheated or been with another guy, he said he knows I would never do that but just wanted the test.

But soon after our kids came home, I started noticing how he treated our son,

he became cold and distant refusing to spend time with him and not wanting to help with school work.

Meanwhile my husband starting favoring our daughter always taking her out on father daughter days and, always helping with school work.

I called him out on it several times, but he never seemed to care, and continued doing it.

A week ago the test came back and my husband saw that our son was his.

He looked remorseful, and went to our son's room to talk to him and gently asked to speak.

My son didn't let him in asking for space, my husband nodded and didn't protest.

Now I'm staying at a friend's house, with my son and daughter, I ended up filling for divorce and custody arrangements are in progress.

My daughter sees her dad almost every day and spends time with him.

But our son won't speak to him or spend time with him, my husband has been begging to let him apologize to our son.

I don't know what to do, on one hand my husband wants to apologize and see our son.

But on the other hand my son won't even pick up his phone calls, I've tried gently talking to my son about it.

But he doesn't want to see or speak to his father. What Should I Do?

Few wounds cut deeper for a child than feeling rejected by the person who is supposed to love them unconditionally. Parents are often seen as a child’s safest place, so when a parent suddenly withdraws affection, the emotional impact can feel like a betrayal of the entire relationship, not just a disagreement.

In this situation, the OP’s son was not hurt only by the request for a paternity test. The deeper injury came from what happened afterward. A twelve-year-old child experienced his father becoming distant, refusing normal moments of connection, and appearing to replace that attention with his sister.

Even though the test eventually confirmed he was his father’s biological child, the damage was already done. From the son’s perspective, the message he received was not “Dad had a question.” It was “Dad was willing to doubt whether I belonged.”

A different perspective is that the husband’s fear may have come from insecurity, anxiety, or some personal trigger rather than a lack of love for his son. People can have irrational fears and make harmful decisions while still caring deeply. However, intent does not erase impact.

A parent’s private doubts become a child’s emotional reality when those doubts change how they are treated. The most painful part is that the son was forced to experience the consequences of an adult concern he had no control over.

Child psychologist Diana Baumrind studied parenting styles and how children’s emotional development is shaped by parental warmth, responsiveness, and consistent support. Her research highlighted that children need both guidance and emotional security from caregivers.

When children experience rejection or inconsistent affection from important attachment figures, it can affect their trust and sense of safety.

This explains why an apology may not immediately repair the relationship. The husband may sincerely regret his actions, but forgiveness is not something he can demand simply because he now knows the test result.

His son needs time to process the fact that his father questioned him and then emotionally pulled away. A child cannot be expected to immediately comfort the adult who caused the hurt.

The most helpful thing OP can do is avoid forcing contact while still leaving space for healing. Her son should know that his feelings are valid and that he is not responsible for repairing the relationship.

If the father truly wants to rebuild trust, the focus should not be on convincing his son to forgive him quickly. It should be on showing consistent accountability over time, through patience, honesty, and respect for his son’s boundaries.

The husband may eventually have the opportunity to repair this relationship, but rebuilding trust will require more than one emotional conversation.

A child’s heart does not work like a test result: proving biology does not automatically restore security. What matters now is whether the father can show, day after day, that his son is loved regardless of doubts, mistakes, or past failures.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters supported respecting the son’s feelings and choices

ThoughtfulLlama − Listen to your son and make sure he knows that you back him up regardless of what he chooses.

Sierra_Smith − I think your husband owes you an explanation first. Once you have an understanding of what happened you can speak with your son.

Make sure he knows it's not his fault, and if you can find it in you there is a good lesson for forgiving others for their mistakes.

Probably still divorce the guy though, if he was willing to accuse you (basicly) then cut off his own son based on what's probably a falsehood.

Velvetx_Aurora − You stick with your son on this one.

Unfortunately your husband made his decision and now he has to live with the consequences of his actions.

I’m sure if he had only asked for paternity test and not treated the son any differently, there would be hope for reconciliation.

But alas, he treated you and your son like s__t and he can’t take that back.

Hopefully son will come around one day but if he doesn’t the husband can only blame himself.

Fit-Concentrate625 − What you should do is to respect your son’s position without pushing on him. And listen to yourself what do you want.

These users emphasized therapy to help the son heal emotionally

Ill-Conversation5210 − Your husband FAFO'd. Your son is the victim of his father's actions. Son definitely needs a good therapist.

Maybe, eventually, if son wants to, father can join in the therapy. Make husband pay 100% of son's therapy. It is the very least he can do.

RhubarbAlive7860 − The reason your son won't speak to his father is simple.

A man could suspect he is not the parent of a child he loves to the moon and back.

But if he loves that child, though his heart might be breaking,he will never let the child doubt his love for a moment.

Everything else, somehow, someway, can be figured out.

Your husband though, made it clear that his love for his son was conditional. Without proof he was the biodad, he withheld his love and affection and caring.

From your son's perspective, his father simply didn't see him as a person worthy of love, regardless of anything else.

His only value to his father was having shared DNA.

This cold-hearted r__ection is for your son to figure out with a good therapist. Maybe the relationship can be salvaged, maybe not.

Maybe soon, maybe not for decades. Don't try to force it.

Artistic-Tough-7764 − Your son is old enough to choose how he relates to others. He could probably use some counseling/support.

ETA: There is a big difference between not advocating for your kid to talk to his other parent and forcing him to take a call.

These Redditors argued children should never suffer from parental doubts

Dontfollahbackgirl − Your son passed the DNA test, but your husband failed the fatherhood test. What an ass.

Even if your son has been mixed up in the hospital or you had been unfaithful, why on earth would a child deserve blame?

(Not you deserved his suspicion either, but honestly, being a tween or teen is hard enough.)

Your husband needs some therapy to examine his own thinking and behavior.

These commenters questioned the husband’s motives and possible insecurity

writing_mm_romance − So your husband was thinking you're like him. ..my guess he was projecting and has cheated.

I hope he's happy he lost his family because of his insecurities. Your son will never fully trust him again.

owaikeia − WTF. OP, did your i__ot of a husband tell you why he started to doubt his son's paternity?

Further, why would his dumbass get mad at the son and not you, even in the interim period? I am genuinely asking. ..

Should the teenager eventually give his father another chance, or should the father accept the consequences of his actions? Can a relationship recover after a child feels conditionally loved? Share your thoughts below!
