Friend Brings Toddler to Adults-Only Trip, Then Blames Everyone for the Problems

in Social Issues

Friend groups often have traditions that survive for years because everyone understands the unspoken rules.

But when someone’s personal circumstances change, those old expectations can suddenly become a source of conflict.

The original poster (OP) and four longtime friends had spent a decade attending the same festival together, with one simple rule: partners were welcome if there was space, but children were not part of the trip.

When one friend could not find childcare, she made her own arrangements, but the journey there quickly became stressful for everyone involved.

Read on to find out how a long-running friendship was affected after the trip ended.

Group of longtime friends faces conflict when one member brings her young child to a trip with strict plans

'AITA for not stopping for my friend during a road trip?'

For the last 10 years five of us who became friends during school have

gone to the same festival and rented cabins the area. It is a just over 5 hour

drive from where we meet up and my van fits 8 people so the rule has

always been if there is space you can bring your S.O or partner but no kids.

Two days before we left Ann (31F) said she would not be able to get

someone to look after her 3 year old daughter for the five days, but

offered to get a hotell room next to the cabins for her and her daughter

and drive her own car since my van is from the 80's and have no crash

safety or way to mount a child seat. On the way we have scheduled a stop

at a resturant about halfway so we left at the same time.

After about 45 minutes Ann called us and said we needed to stop so her

daughter could go to the toilet and eat, and since we were not in a hurry

yet we stopped with her. after 20 minutes we started again, but after

about 30 more minutes she called and had to stop again this time for

almost 50 minutes.

After our scheduled stop at the resturant it was now 18:00 with almost 3

hours left of driving. We had to check in and get the keys to the cabins

before 21:30 so i told Ann if she had to have any more stops we would just

continue. She said she was not expecting any more stops, an hour and a

half later she called and said we had to stop again. I reminded her that we

did not have much time left and would continue on.

We arrived and checked in at around 20:50 and then waited for Ann by the

hotel just down the road from the cabins. When she arrived at 22:45 she

told me that it was irresponsible to leave her and her daughter to drive

alone late in the night, that she could have broken down along the way,

and that i was stressing her by mentioning that us in the cabins had a

deadline.

For the 3 first days she spent most of the day inside her hotell room and

only meeting us for dinner at the hotel, but usually leaving early when her

daughter started to cry or make noise. Day 4 she drove back home without

telling any of us until she was home and for the last 10 days she has been

pretty hostlie and saying we don't take her or her daughter's safety

seriously.

Sometimes conflicts are not really about the event that happened, but about two people experiencing the same situation through completely different emotional lenses.

One person may see a reasonable boundary, while another feels abandoned or unsupported. When those perspectives collide, even a small disagreement can turn into a lasting resentment.

The OP’s situation was not simply about a delayed road trip.

It was about expectations, responsibility, and a long-standing tradition among friends.

For ten years, the group had an established agreement: partners were welcome if there was room, but children were not part of the trip.

Ann tried to find a compromise by arranging separate accommodation and driving herself, which showed that she understood the original arrangement.

However, once the trip began, the practical difficulties of traveling with a young child started affecting the entire group’s schedule.

The OP attempted to balance compassion for Ann’s situation with the responsibility of getting everyone to the destination on time.

A different perspective is that Ann may have felt overwhelmed rather than intentionally inconsiderate.

Traveling alone with a three-year-old can be stressful, especially on a long drive.

Her repeated stops may have come from trying to manage her child’s needs rather than trying to disrupt the group.

However, the difficult part is that choosing to bring a child into an adult-focused trip also meant accepting that the experience might require different planning.

The group was not rejecting her or her daughter; they were maintaining a boundary that had existed for years.

This perspective shows why both sides may have walked away feeling hurt.

Ann may have felt that her friends did not understand the challenges of traveling with a child.

The OP and the rest of the group may have felt that their plans were being changed around a decision Ann made without fully considering the impact on others.

The biggest issue appears to be the lack of shared expectations.

If Ann had communicated earlier that traveling separately with a toddler might be difficult, the group could have discussed alternatives.

Likewise, if the group wanted the trip to remain strictly child-free, that boundary may have needed to be reinforced more firmly before the departure date.

Friendships that last for a decade often survive disagreements, but only when everyone is willing to acknowledge their own part.

Ann’s concerns about safety are understandable, but the group was not responsible for every challenge created by her travel choice.

The OP’s frustration is also understandable, but recognizing Ann’s stress could help prevent the disagreement from becoming a permanent divide.

The lesson is that kindness and boundaries are not opposites.

Good friends can care about someone’s struggles while still accepting that every personal choice comes with consequences.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters agreed that the original “no children” rule should have been respected

SlowEbb6230 − NTA, but I would accept that this may be a great reason to

enforce the “no children” rule unless people are completely comfortable

handling that responsibility solo. If she was okay with driving separate and

just meeting you guys there, and wouldn’t expect you to support her in

caring for the child that’s one thing.

No adult wants to spend their vacation taking care of another adult’s child

and their needs.

Gloomy_Insurance3203 − NTA. She shouldn’t have brought her child tbh. It

wasn’t appropriate far too long of a drive without enough stops. It wasn’t

appropriate and it wasn’t like you abandoned her, you let her know why

you weren’t stopping and why.

InternationalCard624 − NTA if she couldn't get a babysitter or she didn't

want to make the drive on her own, she should have stayed home.

No-BSing-Here − NTA. She's a fully grown woman who thinks she's

responsible enough to have a kid. The responsibility is not up to the group.

She should know kids needs or want to stop to eat and wee and stuff. She

should have left earlier than you did to account for this. She had a phone so

she could call for help if they broke down somewhere.

She should have just said guys I'll have to drop out this year because I've no

childcare. Yeah it sucks that she would have missed out, but sometimes

adulting and parenting . .. Well it does suck! !! I wonder if she thought she'd

be able to dump her kid on all of you at some point. That was never

discussed or agreed.

The rule was no kids, but she came anyway and was pissed that she wasn't

having a good time like the rest of you! !!

Bowman74 − NTA. She changed the parameters of the trip and then

expected everyone to bend to meet her new parameters. Next time, when

you say no children stand on that. This experience is one that has now

ruined the idea of binging kids for everyone.

These Redditors argued that Ann was not truly abandoned or unsafe

speculator100k − When she arrived at 22:45 she told me that it was

irresponsible to leave her and her daughter to drive alone late in the night,

that she could have broken down along the way, and that i was stressing

her by mentioning that us in the cabins had a deadline. NTA.

If she truly felt unsafe driving alone with her daughter, she should have stayed home.

AllAFantasy30 − NTA. She’s acting like you abandoned her and her

daughter in the middle of a horror movie. You told her when you left the

restaurant that you wouldn’t stop again, and then mentioned it again when

she called. And you weren’t THAT far away.

3ish hours isn’t so far that if she had broken down on the way, someone

couldn’t have driven down to help her (it wouldn’t have even been that far

because she’d be on the road). When someone drives separately from the

rest of the group, they run the risk of not staying with them the whole way.

And if that possibility made her feel unsafe, she should have stayed home.

HotDogFR0G − NTA: so, let me get this straight…she threw a tantrum

because she didn’t like having to drive “alone” TO the festival, but she was

perfectly fine driving home alone, all alone, where no one knew where she

was FROM the festival? Doesn’t seem like a safety issue, seems like a

jealousy/FOMO issue.

This group emphasized that parenting comes with sacrifices and that parents sometimes have to miss events when childcare or travel plans do not work

Choppergold − When you have kids it means you can’t do all the things you used to. NTA

ekita079 − NTA. That's the territory with becoming a parent unfortunately,

sometimes things don't work out and you have to put your kid first. Her

error here was expecting you guys would do the same even after you made

it clear you wouldn't.

These commenters criticized the excessive delays

staysaltylol − NTA. 50 min bathroom break? She’s lucky you guys waited for her at all…

NefariousnessMost569 − You're not the a__hole. It was only a 5 hour trip, I

would probably do that without any stops. The fact that you had a planned

stop half way was generous.

treasure83 − NTA. She knew how long the trip was and delayed too much

for you to keep driving with her. Would she rather you miss the cabins just

to follow her car? She had your details and kept you informed (mostly) so

she wasn't far from help if she needed it.

She's probably just pissed off that having her daughter there ruined the

experience for her and she can at least find a reason for sharing that misery.

OP’s annual festival trip had always followed a simple tradition: friends, cabins, and no children.

When Ann couldn’t arrange childcare, OP tried to accommodate her by allowing her to make separate plans nearby.

The conflict started when repeated delays turned a shared journey into a stressful situation, and Ann later blamed OP for not prioritizing her safety despite choosing to drive separately.

Do you think OP should have waited longer, or was Ann responsible for managing her own travel plans?

How would you balance friendship and personal boundaries in this situation? Share your thoughts below.
