Friends Leave Their Chronically Late Buddy Behind After He Misses the Flight He Refused to Rush For

Traveling with friends can create some of the best memories, but it can also reveal exactly how people handle responsibility.

When everyone is working around a schedule, one person’s habits can quickly become everyone else’s problem.

The original poster (OP) went on holiday with three friends, including Ellis, someone who had a long history of being late and unreliable.

Normally, his friends were used to waiting around for him, but the final day of their trip pushed everyone’s patience to the limit.

While the group prepared to leave for the airport, Ellis decided to go hiking despite knowing there was a deadline.

As hours passed, he continued taking his time and refused their suggestions to get a taxi back.

Eventually, the group had to leave without him.

Now OP is wondering whether they were wrong for leaving their friend behind or if Ellis was responsible for his own situation.

Scroll down to see what Reddit thinks.

Ellis’ friends leave him behind after he ignores repeated warnings about timing and misses their flight home

'AITA? We left our friend in another country?'

So a couple years ago me and 3 other lads went on a holiday to Cyprus. We

all get along great and have done for 4 years whilst in uni.

This one guy in our group, we’ll call him Ellis. He is the type of guy that says

he’ll meet us at the train station at 8am and at half eight, we’ll give him a

ring and he’s “just hopping in the shower and leaving”. He’d be late for his

own graduation/wedding/funeral.

So after 5 days of sunbathing, drinking, and eating good food it’s our final

day. We’re all chilling in the villa and Ellis decides to go for a hike. No stress

we have 7 hours to leave, he heads off and we say we’ll get all his stuff in

the car ready to go, it was all packed anyways.

3 hours go by and we give Ellis a call saying he needs to turn back now, he

says no problem and starts his journey back. He’s having a coffee at a cafe.

Another 2 hours go by, we call Ellis and he says he’s on his way back. He

doesn’t sound like he’s moving. We check his location. He’s at a cafe like a

three hour walk away. It’s a Sunday, we don’t know any taxi ranks number

or anything so we give him a call saying that he needs to get a lift back to

the apartment or meet us at the airport.. “No worries lads, I’ll run back”

We try and plead for him to just get a taxi but he’s frugal and won’t get a

taxi so we text him saying his suitcase is at the villa and we’ll have to leave

as our taxi was booked at the last minute anyway. He says that’s fine I’ll

make it back in time.. He doesn’t. He didn’t even try to make it back quickly.

Three hours later we’re sat on the plane and we get a flurry of texts “I’m

back now, where are you, when’s the taxi coming to pick me up”. We just

had to say we got on the plane, and he needs to get the next one.

He was fuming. His parents and girlfriend kicked off at us, I can’t help but

feel like he deserved it.

Sometimes friendship means being patient with someone’s flaws, but there comes a point where patience turns into carrying the consequences of another person’s choices.

In this situation, OP’s frustration was not really about one missed flight.

It was about years of watching Ellis treat time and plans as flexible while expecting everyone else to adjust around him.

The holiday incident became the moment where a familiar pattern finally had a real consequence.

The emotional dynamic is interesting because the group did not abandon Ellis in a difficult situation.

They repeatedly tried to help him.

They warned him hours before leaving, contacted him multiple times, encouraged him to take a taxi, and even explained that they could not delay their own travel plans.

The conflict came because Ellis appeared to believe that his friends would always absorb the inconvenience created by his lack of planning.

A different perspective is that people like Ellis may not always see themselves as disrespectful.

Some chronically late individuals underestimate how their behavior affects others because they focus on their own immediate situation rather than the collective impact.

Research on time perception suggests that some people consistently misjudge how long tasks will take, which can create a pattern of optimism and poor planning.

However, understanding the reason behind the behavior does not remove responsibility for changing it.

This insight applies strongly to Ellis because the problem was not that he went hiking.

Going for a final holiday adventure is reasonable. The issue was continuing with a plan that ignored the fixed reality of an airport departure.

Once he knew he was hours away, refusing to spend money on transportation shifted the cost of his decision onto everyone else.

His friends had already done their part; they could not miss their flight because he preferred a cheaper option.

OP’s choice may feel harsh, especially because travel problems can be stressful and embarrassing. However, friendships also require accountability.

Constantly rescuing someone can unintentionally teach them that their actions have no consequences.

Sometimes allowing a person to face the result of their own choices is the most helpful thing others can do.

The bigger lesson is that being a good friend does not mean endlessly protecting someone from the outcomes of their behavior.

Real friendship includes support, but it also includes boundaries.

Ellis may have been angry in the moment, but perhaps this was the first time his usual pattern finally caught up with him.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters agreed that the friend’s poor planning was his own responsibility

National-Report-5473 − NTA, you tried, he just didn't listen. Hope he takes

this as a learning lesson as being late to everything will get you nowhere.

Ok-Dimension-5528 − Nta. I hate it when people try to make their lack of

organisation your problem. This is on him.

HolSmGamer − NTA. Your friend's negligence is not your responsibility.

cressidacole − His parents and girlfriend can be responsible for their adult toddler. NTA.

These commenters backed OP for leaving

bellbottom-jeans − Time waits for no one, you cant miss a flight because

your friend decided an impromptu 8 hour hike was the best choice day of

numbersthen0987431 − So wait. ..you were on the plane, which requires

reservations, and he was just then getting back to the place you were

staying at? ? Did he think you were going to hold the plane for him or

something? ? NTA. People with zero concept of respect of other people's

time don't get to demand that other people wait for them.

Edcrfvh − NTA. His failure to be on time is his problem, not yours. It's hella

entitled to think everyone will always wait for you even if it means missing

a plane. Leave him more often. Maybe he'll grow up and take responsibility.

That's how I dealt with it. Amazingly after being left a few times they

started to be on time.

These commenters criticized repeated lateness and shared that unreliable people need firm boundaries

hollowpaulo − NTA his constant disrespect of your time is unacceptable.

Being late knowing there are real world consequences is selfish and

inconsiderate. He thinks the world will make way for him. Once you start

giving him actual consequences to his tardiness is when he will either show

he is able to change or someone not worth the hassle.

Loud_Ad_9187 − Nta he decided to miss his flight. How old is he

piper63-c137 − NTA. I live with a chronically late person. They dgaf until it’s

a problem for them. Boundaries are the only way to maintain sanity.

Cute-Yam-5086 − NTA, I had a similar experience with a similar i__ot and

left him in the middle of the desert. We had been camping at Havasu-pai

Canyon near the Grand Canyon. Amazing place. This guy did nothing except

be late for everything.

When it was time to hike out, I reminded him that we had an 11 mile hike in

the desert and having suffered from heat exhaustion previously, I was

prone to heat-related illness and needed an early start. Well that morning

we got up. I made coffee, then breakfast while he sat at a picnic bench

watching the waterfall.

I brought him his breakfast and coffee, reminded him to pack up. That was

all he had to do. "Pack your s__t. We will take care of cleaning, breaking

down camp, and everything. Just pack your s__t. " We ate breakfast and

broke down camp. He sat at the picnic table.

We loaded our backpacks and I reminded him no less than three times to

pack up. He sat at the picnic table. We then grabbed our packs and

everyone's water bottles and told him we were going to the spring to filter

water and to pack up and meet us there. He sat at the picnic table. We

waited. And waited. And waited some more.

Eventually we left his water bottles at the spring and left. We got to the car

just as the heat was getting unbearable and just in time to get the last two

hamburgers from the nice native american woman cooking burgers and

dogs. I think the fact that we got the last two tells you that we were on the

late side of the hikers.

Eventually this dumbshit comes huffing and puffing up the trail. His face

was beet red and he looks like he is about to die. He was pissed and

accused us of leaving him in the desert, which was true. We looked at him

as we ate our burgers and laughed. "I think she might have one hotdog left

dude" That dude was a tool.

And so is your friend.

These commenters argued adults should manage themselves instead of making others responsible

Ok_Management4634 − You warned him multiple times that he was at risk

of being late. He ignored the warnings because he's selfish and thinks the

whole world will wait on him. . NTA at all.

KickIt77 − His mommy and his girlfriend shouldn't let him out of the house

if they don't think he can conduct himself like an adult. NTA. He was in

contact, he just didn't respect your time. Don't travel with this clown again.

After years of knowing Ellis’s habit of being late, the group gave him plenty of chances to get back in time before their flight.

What started as a relaxed final-day hike turned into a stressful airport situation when he ignored repeated warnings and chose convenience over urgency.

Some may argue the friends should have waited for their travel companion, but others feel Ellis was responsible for his own missed flight.

Was leaving him behind a harsh lesson or a fair consequence? How would you handle a friend who always runs late? Share your thoughts below!
