Girlfriend Wins Dinner Choice Game, Then Picks the One Meal She Knows He Hates

Couples often create little games to make ordinary moments more exciting, but those games only work when both people are still trying to make sure everyone has fun.

A playful idea can quickly become frustrating when one person treats it like a competition instead of a shared experience.

One man agreed to a creative date night challenge with his girlfriend where they would use rock, paper, scissors to decide different parts of their meal.

He thought it would be a fun way to surprise each other and enjoy a movie night together.

After winning several categories himself, he chose options he knew they could both enjoy.

However, when his girlfriend won the main course, she picked something she knew he disliked.

When he asked if they could find a compromise, she refused and said the rules allowed her to choose.

Scroll down to see why this small dinner decision turned into a bigger relationship argument.

Couple’s playful food challenge turns sour when one partner chooses a meal the other refuses to eat

'AITA for expecting my girlfriend to choose something different for us to eat?'

My girlfriend and I had a nice movie night planned at the weekend. She said

she saw a fun idea of how we could choose what to eat and drink. She said

we could do rock, paper, scissors for a starter, main, dessert, snacks and

drinks.

Whoever wins, chooses that course to be shared between us. The idea is to

go round the supermarket separately and meet up at the end to how the

other person what you've chosen.

I thought it sounded fun so I agreed. I won dessert, snacks and drinks and

my girlfriend won starter and main. I choose two different drinks as we like

to drink different things so I got wine for my gf and some cans of beer for

me then got a couple of snacks for us to share and a dessert we both like.

When we met up she showed me what she had gotten. For the main she

chose food she knows I don't like. I asked if she would mind changing it or

getting something that I could eat instead but she refused and said the

whole point of the game was that the winner chose and that she chose

something she really wants to eat.

I pointed out it's not really fair to choose food you know the other person

doesn't like since the idea is that it’s meant to be fun for both of us but she

just said I shouldn't be starting an argument and ruining the night but I

pointed out it's her ruining the night by going out of her way to choose

food she knows I don't like.. AITA for expecting her to choose something else?

Small disagreements in relationships are rarely about the object causing the argument.

A meal, a movie choice, or a simple game can become a reflection of whether someone feels considered by the person they love.

The OP’s frustration was not simply that he disliked the food his girlfriend chose.

The issue was that the activity was presented as a shared experience.

The purpose of the game was to let each person surprise and treat the other, not to create a situation where one person gets complete control over something the other person cannot enjoy.

The OP accepted that his girlfriend won the main course and respected that she had the choice.

His expectation was that her choice would still consider both people eating it.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend interpreted the rules differently: the winner chooses, so her responsibility was only to pick something she wanted.

A different perspective is that the girlfriend may have focused too heavily on the competition aspect and missed the emotional purpose behind the activity.

Games between couples usually work because both people are trying to create enjoyment, not because one person technically wins and the other person simply accepts whatever happens.

Choosing a favorite meal that a partner dislikes can feel less like a playful surprise and more like using a rule to justify ignoring their preferences.

This perspective shows why the disagreement became bigger than dinner.

The OP likely did not need his girlfriend to completely abandon her preference; he wanted evidence that she cared about whether he enjoyed the night too.

Likewise, his girlfriend may have felt that changing the choice meant losing the fun element of the game.

Both were protecting different interpretations of the situation.

A healthier solution would have been choosing something adventurous that neither person disliked, or agreeing beforehand that the winner chooses from options both people enjoy.

A playful challenge only works when both participants feel included.

The OP was not wrong for expecting consideration, and his girlfriend was not wrong for enjoying the idea of choosing something she liked.

The problem was turning a couples’ activity into a competition where one person’s enjoyment mattered more than the other’s.

In relationships, winning a game should never come at the cost of making your partner feel like they lost.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters said the girlfriend ruined a fun activity by ignoring OP’s preferences

Rendeane − NTA. It sounded like a fun game, but when your girlfriend

intentionally chose an entree she knew you wouldn't eat, she became the AH.

Fancy_North_4348 − She totally ruined it. If my husband and I did

something like this - which sounds like fun BTW - and he chose something

he knew I didn't like, I'd be totally bummed. It's supposed to be a couple

thing, not a solo thing. Choosing something the other person doesn't like is selfish.

WhiteKnightPrimal − NTA. This is supposed to be a fun game that results in

both of you enjoying the meal, maybe getting to try new things. That

means you have to cater your choices to what you both definitely like or

what you both may like. Instead, she deliberately chose things she knew you didn't like.

She's taken a fun date night game and used it to completely exclude you

from the date while getting something she likes both for herself and from

you. It's rude and it's selfish and is completely against what that little game

is supposed to be about.

These Redditors viewed the choice as intentional, selfish, and possibly meant to upset OP

Chronza − Using the game to punish you seems kinda fucked up

Barrot_and_Rubys_Mom − NTA. It sounds like you took it as a fun date

game, she meant it as a prank. In other words you assumed it was supposed

to be fun and about trying to have a nice enjoyable evening together. She

took it as an opportunity to stick it to you and pick things you wouldn't like to eat.

Remember she's this kind of person next time you agree to a "game'. Find

out the rules in advance and expect it be something underhanded.

Personally, I wouldn't be with someone like this who finds fun in making me

uncomfortable/eat things they know I don't like.

Fancy_Average5440 − NTA. Have you considered the possibility that your

girlfriend is an i__ot?

These users suggested petty reactions while agreeing OP was justified

thatemocow − NTA - but I would have been like “oh I didn’t understand the

game. Let me go rechoose my stuff. ” And picked things she wouldn’t like.

BooksCheeseandBees − My petty ass would put the wine back.

Illustrious_Leg_2537 − So you put the wine back you’d gotten for her, right? Lol

This group questioned whether the girlfriend was being self-centered in the relationship

MLMLW − NTA. She should have chosen the food with you in mind as you

did for her. She's the AH for choosing what only she likes.

LavenderSharpie − Both of you were thinking of her when you made your

choices. She didn't consider you at all. How long has she been your

girlfriend and is she always so very self centered?

Not_The_Mama7741 − Either your girlfriend doesn't like you, she is selfish,

or both. ...now you need to decide what to do.The issue wasn’t really about losing a game of rock, paper, scissors, it was about whether the “winner chooses” idea was meant to create a fun shared experience or simply give one person permission to ignore the other person’s preferences.

While the girlfriend technically won the main course choice, choosing something she knew her partner disliked turned a playful activity into a one-sided decision.

Do you think winning the game gave her the right to pick anything, or should consideration have mattered more than the rules?

Would you have let it go to keep the night fun, or would you feel disrespected too? Share your thoughts below!
