Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios have officially greenlit the Green Lantern show, Lanterns, for HBO. The series, which has been eagerly anticipated by fans, will consist of eight episodes and will be based on DC‘s iconic will-powered heroes.
Lanterns to Feature John Stewart and Hal Jordan
Lanterns will follow the story of new recruit John Stewart and the legendary Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. This series aims to introduce these fan-favorite DC heroes into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe (DCU)
The series boasts an impressive lineup of talent behind the scenes, including showrunner and executive producer Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark). Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers, Lost) and comic book legend Tom King will also serve as executive producers and co-writers alongside Mundy.
We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm,” said co-CEOs Gunn and Safran in a joint statement.
John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.
Lanterns will play a significant role in setting up the new DCU, which will officially kick off with the release of Superman on July 11, 2025. This film will not only introduce David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel but also feature other major DC characters, including Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult),
Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Additionally, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner will make his live-action debut as Green Lantern in the movie.
While details about the release date for Lanterns remain under wraps, fans can look forward to this exciting addition to the DC Universe, which promises to blend a “True Detective-type mystery” with the thrilling lore of the Green Lanterns.
