He Asked Me to Watch His Cat for Free—Then Demanded I Start Paying Its Bills Because I Loved It Too Much

Doing a favor for family is usually pretty straightforward. Someone needs help, you step in, and everyone walks away grateful.

At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work.

One Redditor never imagined that agreeing to watch his brother’s cat for a month would somehow turn into an argument about who should be financially responsible for the pet. After spending weeks caring for the cat—and paying every expense himself—he found himself being accused of acting like the cat’s real owner.

The bizarre accusation eventually pushed him to snap in front of the entire family.

'AITAH for calling my brother a b*tch after he said I should pay for his cat because I visit it too much?'

My brother went to Australia for a month and asked me to watch his cat while he was gone. I agreed because I like cats and I wanted to help...

For the entire month, the cat stayed with me. I fed her, cleaned the litter box, played with her, took her to the vet for a routine checkup, and paid...

I never asked him to reimburse me because I figured I was doing him a favor.

When he got back, I immediately gave the cat back. I wasn’t trying to keep her or anything.

But after spending a month with her, I got attached.

So I started stopping by my brother’s house about twice a week just to hang out with the cat for an hour or so. My brother never told me not...

A few weeks later, at a family dinner, someone joked that the cat likes me more than my brother now. My brother laughed and then said, “She’s practically your cat,...

I thought he was kidding, but he doubled down and said that since I see the cat so often, I should start paying for her food and vet bills because...

I told him that’s ridiculous because she’s legally and actually his cat. Visiting someone’s pet doesn’t suddenly make you financially responsible for it.

He kept insisting, saying that if I wanted to act like she was my cat, I should pay for her. After a few minutes of this, I got fed up...

Now my parents and most of my relatives think I was out of line because I insulted him in front of everyone. They think I should have handled it more...

My brother says I’m the a__hole for embarrassing him, and nobody seems to care that he was trying to guilt me into paying for his own pet.. AITA?

A Month of Cat Sitting Turned Into an Unexpected Bond

The original poster explained that his brother was traveling to Australia for a month and needed someone to care for his cat. Happy to help, he welcomed the cat into his home for the duration of the trip.

Rather than doing the bare minimum, he treated the cat like one of his own.

Throughout the month he bought food, cleaned the litter box, spent time playing with her, and even took her for a routine veterinary checkup. He covered every expense out of his own pocket without asking his brother for reimbursement.

To him, it was simply a favor.

When his brother returned, the cat immediately went back home without any complaints or hesitation.

Still, after living together for an entire month, the siblings’ furry companion had grown on him.

He started stopping by his brother’s house a couple of times each week just to spend an hour playing with the cat. His brother never objected and never suggested the visits were a problem.

Everything seemed perfectly normal—until a family dinner changed the mood completely.

One Joke Quickly Became an Argument

During dinner, another family member laughed that the cat seemed to like the original poster more than her actual owner.

Everyone chuckled.

Then his brother responded:

“She’s practically your cat, so why don’t you pay for her bills?”

At first, it sounded like harmless teasing.

But instead of moving on, his brother repeated himself and insisted that because he visited the cat so often, he should start paying for food, veterinary expenses, and other costs.

The original poster couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

He pointed out the obvious.

The cat legally belonged to his brother. Visiting someone else’s pet doesn’t suddenly transfer financial responsibility.

His brother refused to back down.

He continued insisting that if someone wanted to “act like” the owner, then they should help pay for ownership.

After several minutes of the same argument, the original poster finally lost his patience.

“Stop being such a b*tch.”

The room immediately fell silent.

Family Focused on the Insult—Not the Argument

Instead of questioning the brother’s strange demand, most relatives focused on the insult.

His parents and several family members said he crossed a line by embarrassing his brother in front of everyone.

His brother agreed, claiming he was the real victim because he’d been publicly insulted.

The original poster couldn’t understand why nobody seemed bothered that his brother had tried to guilt him into paying for a pet that wasn’t his.

He turned to Reddit to ask whether he had actually been the one in the wrong.

Here's what Redditors had to say:

Many readers also questioned whether the brother was actually upset about the frequent visits rather than the money.

BlueThoughts92 − NTA. Sounds like he now gets to find a paid pet sitter next time he goes out of town. He’s a fool to take advantage of your kindness.

lookieloser − It was a really s__tty way for him to tell you to stop coming over so damn much, but that's still what it was. You should have offered...

Bitter_Warning418 − NTA he probably shouldn’t of been acting like a b__ch

Others disagreed, arguing that if the visits were becoming excessive, he should have simply communicated that directly instead of inventing a bizarre argument about pet ownership.

CocoaAlmondsRock − Bring out the receipts -- how much you paid when he was gone -- and point out that you never asked for repayment.

Tell him you'll pay the cat's bills, but she becomes your cat and lives at your house NO VISITING from your brother. Unless of course, he chips in for her...

Clearly he can't afford to have a pet.

el_grande_ricardo − NTA. But personally I'd have gone for option B - "ok, I'll pick her up tomorrow".

donteattheshrimp − What I'm reading is you love the cat. Your brother does not like the cat. You should take the cat home.

Some commenters believed calling his brother a name in front of the family wasn’t the most mature response.

mander4242 − NTA buttt also you visit his cat? Lol like consistently go out of your way to drive to his house to chill with his cat. ..not him?

Is it possible he is bothered by the fact his sibling cares to see his cat more than him?

And his comments were passive aggressive attempts to call out what he likely sees as invasive/insulting?

Tb1969 − Probably not the best thing to say around extended family.

You could have said in front of everyone "YOU asked me to take care of the cat for a month while you were away. I did since it was stressful...

I paid out of my own pocket and took her to the vet for checkup which you never compensated me for.

I spent time with her during a stressful time. THIS? This is how you repay me? " "You want to have a cat but not have the responsibilities of a...

You'd look like a hero. NTA but you could have handled it better for your benefit.

LadyCass79 − ESH This is a stupid, non-issue. I don't believe he's was actually serious.

I do believe that he found your visiting multiple times a week, not to see him, but his cat intrusive or insulting.

It sounds like neither of you are good at talking about your real feelings directly or with civility. Name calling, yeah, that's always a deescalation.

The obvious response is, "OK, but my cat that I'm paying for lives with me then. "

ponpiriri − Wait a minute. You were taking care of his cat for free AND paying for vet bills and food? ??

Kindness Doesn’t Transfer Ownership

Helping someone care for their pet doesn’t make you financially responsible for that animal forever.

The original poster stepped in during his brother’s absence, covered expenses voluntarily, and returned the cat as promised. Visiting afterward because he had grown attached didn’t suddenly make him the owner.

While insulting his brother escalated the argument, many readers felt the frustration was understandable after being pressured to subsidize someone else’s pet.

In the end, the situation serves as a reminder that generosity shouldn’t be mistaken for obligation—and that appreciating someone’s kindness is usually a much better strategy than trying to send them the bill.
