He Rushed to Help His Young Cousins After Their Parents Were Found Dead, Then the Reality Finally Hit Him

Some phone calls change your life before you even have time to understand what you’re hearing.

One morning, a man was preparing his motorcycle and enjoying an unusually beautiful day when his phone rang. It was one of his cousins, which immediately struck him as strange. Usually, when that side of the family called, it was his aunt.

This time, the caller was one of the children.

The boy was only six years old and was panicking. His eight-year-old brother was there too, and the children were desperately asking their older cousin if he could explain how to perform CPR.

He immediately told them to call the police and promised he would be there within minutes.

When he arrived, both boys were outside, crying and screaming. Neighbors had already taken them away from the house and were trying to keep them safe.

Not the actual pḥoto

Then he learned what had happened inside.

'My cousins found my aunt and uncle dead today and I was the "first responder"?'

This morning, I was getting my motorcycle ready for the unusually great weather when I got a call from one of my cousins.

Now I instantly found this odd because if I ever hear from them I get a call from my aunt.

I answer and my youngest cousin from that part of the family is 6, the older brother is 8. He's freaking out asking if I can explain CPR to them.

I told them to call the police and that I'd be over in 5 minutes. I speed over and they're both outside crying and screaming.

Thankfully the neighbors had them and told me that both the parents were inside on the floor. I am blood related to my aunt by the way, my uncle was...

Now I have a ***LOT*** of experience with dealing with traumatic sights.

I was in the Infantry with tenure. I've not only seen some messed up stuff, I've caused some messed up stuff.

In that job you get a lot of medical training because we're the nurses for the medic when he's kinda busy. So we're trained fairly well.

So I run into the house. My aunt? Her head is blown off, and my uncle? Top of his head is also wide open.

It's obvious that he shot her, then took his own life while the two boys were asleep. By this point the police had arrived and were opening the door.

I let them know it's a real bad sight, female has no head. The one cop threw up the moment he turned the corner.

I'm still dealing with the sight mentally. I kind of went into my old soldier mode and disconnected from the emotional side of me.

I had no choice, my cousins always seen me as that tough guy. But now? Now I'm finally breaking up a bit.

She had been done with him and they were splitting up. He was abusive to her and a general a__hole.

So she was over it. When he learned that she was serious? He kills her, takes his own life, all with HIS OWN TWO F__KING CHILDREN IN THE NEXT ROOM...

What an absolutely pathetic piece of s__t, I would normally say I hope he's burning right now. But I'm 100% certain he is.

I miss her already so much. She was there when I graduated training. She was amazing and I'm so sad she's gone to such an evil act.

He Had Seen Terrible Things Before, But This Was Different

The man had spent years in the infantry, so he wasn’t unfamiliar with traumatic situations. Military service had exposed him to disturbing sights and experiences, and he had received enough medical training to know how to respond when someone needed help.

That experience kicked in almost automatically.

He went toward the house and quickly realized the situation was far worse than he had imagined. His aunt and uncle were both dead, apparently following a murder-suicide.

The police arrived shortly afterward. He warned them that the scene inside was extremely disturbing. Even one of the responding officers became physically ill after seeing what had happened.

For the man, however, something different happened.

He switched into what he described as his old “soldier mode.”

He shut down the emotional part of himself and concentrated on what needed to be done.

There were two frightened children outside who needed someone they trusted.

And he was that person.

The Worst Part Was Knowing Why It Happened

The tragedy became even harder to process because the circumstances weren’t completely unexpected.

His aunt had been planning to leave her husband. According to the poster, her husband had been abusive and had generally treated her terribly. She had finally reached the point where she was serious about ending the relationship.

He couldn’t accept it.

Instead of allowing her to leave, he killed her and then himself while their two children were asleep nearby.

That realization seemed to hit the poster harder than the initial shock.

He wasn’t simply grieving a relative. He was grieving someone he loved and remembered as an important part of his life. She had supported him during major moments, including his military training and graduation.

She wasn’t just another casualty.

She was his aunt.

And now she was gone because of someone else’s decision.

He admitted that his anger toward his uncle was overwhelming. The man had destroyed his wife’s life, his own life, and left two young children to wake up to an unimaginable reality.

For a while, the poster could hold everything together.

Then he couldn’t anymore.

Being the Strong One Doesn’t Mean You Don’t Hurt

One of the most striking parts of the story is how quickly the poster became the person everyone expected to be strong.

His cousins already saw him as the tough one. He had military experience. He knew how to deal with emergencies. He arrived when they needed someone.

But knowing how to function during a crisis isn’t the same thing as being unaffected by it.

Sometimes the person who looks calm is simply postponing the emotional reaction until later.

That appears to be what happened here.

Once the immediate crisis was over, the reality began catching up with him. The images, the loss of his aunt, the circumstances surrounding her death, and the knowledge that two children were now without their parents were becoming impossible to compartmentalize.

Here's the feedback from the Reddit community:

Several commenters urged him and the children to seek professional support, particularly because the boys were so young and had experienced an extraordinarily traumatic event.

Terrible_Horror − I am so sorry for your loss and what you had to go through in life. Love and prayers to you and the kids.

inplightmovie − OMG those poor kids. I’m sorry you had to go through that but I’m glad you could be there for those children. Praying for healing for all of...

Isamosed − Get them to play Tetris. Kid versions exist. It helps. We don’t know why, but if there’s a chance, you gotta go for it. You too buddy. Play...

Many encouraged the poster to stay close to them because they clearly trusted him.

therealsatansweasel − For such a horrific situation, thankfully he didn't decide to take the kids too. My heart goes out to you and the children.

One_Advantage793 − Damn, man. So sorry. He was definitely a POS. Unfortunately, that is the worst time for domestic abuse victims -

when the spouse learns they mean it this time. The poor kids. Poor you. Old soldier or not.

I almost died when I was 5 and spent months in children's hospitals several times with dying kids, so I'm a bit of an old soldier, too.

That, and then I was a journalist for 20+ years. I covered some n__ty domestic cases.

Being able to detach in the moment and deal with whatever has to be dealt with is quite useful, but it doesn't mean you don't have feelings.

That really sucks. I am wishing the best for you. Take care of yourself. Find somebody you can talk to.

And I hope those kids get some good care, too.

Others reminded him that military experience doesn’t make someone immune to grief or trauma.

Oriole_30 − This is a vent. Damn bro, heavy. You will have ptsd 100%, dont deny it.

Seek help however you can and it sounds like those kids gonna need you too. Condolences, my heart goes out to you.

el_dingusito − Jesus. .. a kid seeing that and then calling to see if you can explain CPR. ...

Jjrose362 − What a horrible event. I’m so sorry. It’s different when it’s family. I would strongly recommend therapy for you and your cousins.

It’s especially important for them because they’re so you and their brains are still developing.

[Reddit User] − Therapy asap. I think you should be there with them. They trust you so much that you’re the first one they called. I’m sorry dude….

LessLikelyTo − I’m so sorry this happened to all of you. Wow. If you can, consider getting EMDR with a therapist. It can help with the images.

There is no easy lesson in a tragedy like this. A family lost two people in a single morning, and two children were left carrying memories no child should have to carry.

The poster may have been trained to run toward chaos, but he is still human. He is allowed to grieve his aunt. He is allowed to be angry. He is allowed to fall apart after spending the crisis holding everyone else together.

Sometimes being strong doesn’t mean never breaking down. Sometimes it means knowing when you finally need someone else to help you put the pieces back together.
