He Thought He Was Just Sharing an Opinion, Then It Cost Him His Best Friend

Friendships at 17 can feel permanent, intense, and deeply personal. So when one falls apart, it rarely happens over just one moment. It builds, cracks, and then finally breaks.

For one teenager, that breaking point came after a single comment, one he didn’t think was a big deal at the time.

He told a mutual friend that he thought his best friend’s boyfriend might be gay.

What followed wasn’t just an argument. It was the end of a three-year friendship.

Here’s the original post:

'AITAH for telling my friend that I think my Best Friend's boyfriend is gay?'

I [17 M] told one of my mutual friends [17 F] that I think my best friend's boyfriend is gay

So, it all started when one of my mutual friends and I were walking down to the bus stop together,

and we were talking about my now ex-best friend and ended up talking about her boyfriend.

So, for more understanding of the story, my ex-best friend \[17 F\] is friends with this girl \[17 F\] we'll call Savanna,

and they have known each other since middle school. During my freshman year of high school, I started to become friends with my ex-best friend, whom we'll call Aniyah.

Aniyah and I started to get really close, and eventually she asked if I wanted to be her best friend, which I agreed to.

Fast forward to junior year, she gets a new boyfriend she met on Roblox. When she was telling me about him, she was saying how he's really nice,

but he's ugly and she'd never e-date but they eventually started dating. Now, at first, I didn't like the idea of an online boyfriend because

he can be anyone behind the screen, but I couldn't stop her, so I let it be, until he started mentally abusing her.

he would say things like " I'm the best you've ever had," and " you'll never find anyone better than me," etc.

A little later into their relationship, they broke up twice and when she told me, I told her to let the third time be the final time you guys break...

but in the end, she didn't take my advice. Their relationship just kept getting more toxic and she would come to me asking for advice or even

just venting to me about her relationship problems when I have problems of my own, and her problems were becoming too much to handle,

so I started distancing myself to 1, be in my own space away from her issues, and 2, deal with my own problems.

She would text me about how I'm being distant and how she almost cut me off because of it.

I respond and tell her that hearing about how her boyfriend treats her while not taking my advice is piling on to the stress I already have in my own...

when I say she would vent, I mean full-blown sobbing. After that, we started to become more distant, but not too distant.

Back to that day, Savanna and I started talking about how controlling and manipulative her boyfriend is.

I eventually said that I think he's gay and gave reasons why I think that. (not saying that him being gay would be a bad thing I just thought that...

I told her that he talks like he's one of the girls, saying things like period and clock it, but that alone isn't enough to think he's gay. His favorite...

Now, he could just like Billie, but for her to be his favorite, plus all of the issues they had in their relationship

(they argued almost every day for months about the smallest things and they also had to stay on the phone together all day, every day),

and I'm gay, so it takes one to know one. I told Savanna I think he's gay, which she agreed with me.

Savanna tells Aniyah after we come back from break that we thought her boyfriend is gay but when she told her this it's first period

and me and Aniyah don't have any classes together so she texted me that I'm weird and we need to talk so passing period

I asked her how am I weird and what do we need to talk about, to which she tells me to wait until lunch (lunch is after 3rd period)

but toward the end of second period she text me a whole letter in which she felt as though me telling he friend that her boyfriend is gay is weird...

I should have went to her first so she could give me clarification that he isn't, which I agree but at the time I felt as though she would've ignored...

as she's done in the past when it comes to her boyfriend, she hasn't even met in person yet.

She also said that me talking about her boyfriend after saying I didn't want to hear about him anymore was weird,

which I told her, I told Savanna that before I said I didn't want to hear about her boyfriend.

After I told her that I only stated my opinion and I never said he was gay, I only thought that.

She then started to say that it was about me telling her friend her business, which, if it wasn't true, then there wouldn't be any business to tell,

but then she said that she doesn't know how to feel, and she didn't want to be best friends anymore, so we can just be friends, also saying that the...

I told her that she angered me because, after almost 3 years of us being best friends, she wants to no longer be best friends and

doesn't think the friendship will last. I told her that "it feels like I wasted my time and energy on a friendship that ended over a boy",

which she told me would never happen. Then I started to tell her about herself and how she's so self-centered,

which she is, she never cares about how I feel, it always has to be about her. I also told her she's said some hurtful things about me,

one of the examples being her telling me she doesn't even know why she's best friends with me. I'm so cringe.

I go on to say, "It seems like there is something else going on that you're not telling me".

She responded and told me, "You never speak up, and maybe there is something else going on,

but I just feel disrespected, and I don't play about my respect". I should have stopped responding by now,

but I didn't, and I told her, "It seems like this decision didn't take a lot for you to make".

She tells me that it did take a lot out of her and that it's like if she told everybody that I'm gay and who my crush is (I was...

which I told her she would be stating facts in which I only stated my opinion to one of her closest friends which I know isn't the person to go...

I ended up directly asking her if she wanted to be friends or not at all because at this point, I was fed up.

She told me, "I don't want to be friends because I don't want to hurt you anymore". I told her, "That's all you had to say", then blocked her. AITAH...

A Friendship Already Under Pressure

Before the comment, things were already strained.

He and his best friend, Aniyah, had been close since freshman year. They built that kind of bond where you share everything, advice, feelings, even relationship struggles.

But her relationship had become a problem.

She started dating a guy she met online, and over time, the relationship turned toxic. They argued constantly. He made controlling comments. They broke up and got back together more than once.

And through all of it, she leaned heavily on him.

At first, he tried to help. He gave advice, listened, supported her. But eventually, it became overwhelming. He had his own stress, his own life, and her constant venting started to feel like too much.

So he pulled back a little.

Not to hurt her, but to breathe.

She noticed. And she didn’t like it.

The Comment That Changed Everything

Then came the conversation at the bus stop.

He was talking with another mutual friend, Savanna, about the situation. About how toxic the boyfriend seemed, how controlling he was.

And somewhere in that conversation, he said it.

He thought the boyfriend might be gay.

His reasoning wasn’t malicious in his mind. He pointed to how the guy spoke, the way he acted, even his music taste. He also leaned on his own identity, saying it was something he felt he could recognize.

Savanna agreed.

At the time, it felt like casual conversation. An opinion shared between friends.

But it didn’t stay there.

When Private Opinions Stop Being Private

Savanna told Aniyah.

And that’s when things escalated.

Aniyah didn’t see it as harmless speculation. She saw it as disrespect. Not just toward her boyfriend, but toward her.

From her perspective, he had taken something personal and shared it behind her back. He hadn’t come to her directly. He hadn’t asked. He hadn’t considered how it might affect her.

And more importantly, he was speculating about someone’s sexuality without knowing for sure.

That’s not just gossip. That’s sensitive territory, especially at their age.

The Argument That Unraveled Everything

What could have been a tense conversation quickly turned into something bigger.

She accused him of being weird and disrespectful. He defended himself, saying it was just his opinion, not a fact. She said he should have come to her first. He said she probably wouldn’t have listened anyway.

Then it shifted.

Old frustrations came out. He called her self-centered. Brought up past hurtful comments she had made. Questioned how much she really valued their friendship.

She responded by saying she felt disrespected and didn’t want to continue being best friends.

That was the real turning point.

Because once that line was crossed, it stopped being about the boyfriend.

It became about trust.

Why This Hit So Hard

From his side, it felt unfair.

He had supported her through a toxic relationship. Listened to her problems. Tried to help. And now, it seemed like everything ended over one comment about a boy.

From her side, it wasn’t just one comment.

It was about boundaries. About feeling talked about instead of talked to. About someone she trusted discussing her relationship behind her back in a way that felt personal and potentially harmful.

And there’s another layer here that’s hard to ignore.

Speculating about someone’s sexuality, especially when they haven’t said anything themselves, carries weight. It can feel like labeling, even if that wasn’t the intention.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Most responses were critical of his actions, especially the decision to speculate about someone’s sexuality and share it with others.

PurpleEmotional1401 − Outing people against their wishes is despicable. It's even worse

when you don't have a f__king clue whether they are gay or not. You don't deserve to have friends. YTA

This wasn’t really about whether the boyfriend is gay.

It was about trust, boundaries, and how easily a single comment can shift the foundation of a relationship.

He didn’t think he was doing something serious. She felt deeply disrespected.

And somewhere between intention and impact, the friendship collapsed.

So was this just a misunderstanding that got out of hand, or a moment that revealed cracks that were already there?

Because sometimes, it’s not the comment itself that ends things.

It’s what that comment represents.
