Hotel Worker Refuses Influencer’s Free Room Request, And Reddit Loves The Response

Hotel workers often have to balance being helpful with following policies. While most guests understand that employees cannot magically create rooms that do not exist, there are always a few people who believe persistence will somehow change reality.

OP was working at a hotel in Montana when a late-night guest arrived expecting to find accommodation. Unfortunately, the hotel had no rooms available, but OP still tried to help by offering an alternative option. Instead of appreciating the effort, the guest became increasingly frustrated and started explaining why OP should be able to make an exception.

The conversation soon moved away from finding a solution and toward a completely different argument about influence, recognition, and what the guest believed she deserved. By the end of the encounter, OP was left wondering how a simple hotel request became such a dramatic situation. Scroll down for the full story.

A hotel worker refuses a sold-out guest demanding a free room for social media exposure, leading to an unbelievable late-night confrontation

'Not the first time, and not the last..'

Just had a woman and her partner come to check in with no reservation,

I apologized and told her we are sold out (this is Bozeman, Mt, a very touristy area) but that I would be happy to call and ask if our sister...

Good lord you would have thought I took away her reason for life!

She then told me how she worked in hotels for x number of years and she "knows that we always keep aside a room for emergencies/walk ins".

It is after midnight. In a tourist city. On a weekend. No. We do not hold aside rooms for walk ins. In the winter, yes. In the summer? That is...

I then get hit with the "I am an influencer and will tell my audience of how s__tty of a hotel this is!"

Dear sweet little baby J, what???? She then tells me that she would have given us the exposure for her followers to come stay and how she is never denied.

Her buddy and her decide to set up a "photo shoot" outside on the patio, I asked them to not do that and that I would need them to leave.

She again hits me with "do you know I have 20k followers on Tik-Tok! I would have given your hotel business in return for exposure"

Ya'll, I can't even...she expected a free room for "exposure"

in a tourist city at my hotel when our rates start at $650 per night, on a weekend (yes, I know it's Sunday).

ou know you have worked in hotels for a long time when someone does this and you just laugh at them, like an actual audible laugh.

I am not even shocked anymore, angry? Yes. Shocked No.

Sometimes the most difficult part of working with the public is realizing that some people do not see a service as a transaction. They see it as an opportunity to prove their importance.

In this story, the conflict was never just about a missing hotel room. It was about entitlement, expectations, and the belief that personal status should override normal rules.

The OP’s frustration comes from a situation that many hospitality workers recognize: a guest arrives expecting an exception and becomes upset when reality does not match their assumptions.

The hotel was sold out, the employee offered a reasonable alternative by checking another property, and yet the guest treated the answer as a personal insult. Instead of accepting that availability is limited, she shifted the conversation toward her experience, her online following, and what she believed she could offer in exchange.

A different perspective is that some people genuinely misunderstand how influencer partnerships work. Someone with an audience may believe their exposure has meaningful value, especially if they are used to receiving discounts or complimentary products.

However, businesses usually evaluate partnerships based on measurable benefits, brand alignment, and timing. A busy hotel in a high-demand tourist location does not automatically gain value from a person requesting a last-minute free stay.

The deeper issue is the difference between influence and entitlement. Having followers does not create an obligation for others to provide something valuable. A person’s social reach may open doors for collaboration, but it does not replace normal customer policies or guarantee special treatment.

Psychologist Dacher Keltner, who studies power and social behavior, has explained that feelings of power can sometimes reduce a person’s awareness of others’ perspectives and increase expectations that their own needs should take priority.

His research on power dynamics suggests that people who feel influential may become more focused on their own goals unless they actively practice empathy and perspective-taking.

That perspective helps explain why the interaction escalated. The guest appeared focused on what she believed she deserved rather than recognizing the employee’s position. The front desk worker was not refusing because of personal dislike; they were following the reality of limited inventory.

The OP’s reaction also reflects something common in customer-facing jobs: after seeing the same patterns repeatedly, unbelievable behavior becomes almost predictable. What once might have caused confusion becomes another example of someone trying to negotiate with circumstances that cannot be changed.

The lesson is not that influencers never provide value. Many creators build meaningful partnerships with businesses. The difference is that successful collaborations are usually based on mutual agreement, not surprise demands at midnight when a hotel is full.

A room is not free simply because someone promises attention. Respect works both ways: guests deserve good service, and workers deserve to have their professional decisions treated with basic courtesy.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters mocked the influencer’s follower count and argued that it was not impressive or powerful

Notamaga_6629 − 20k followers?! Nothing .

birdmanrules − 20k. I have 62000 and I'm nothing special

These Redditors criticized the entitlement of influencers who use their audience as a threat against businesses

SkwrlTail − "You're right! We *do* set aside rooms! Someone else already got it, sorry. "

DaneAlaskaCruz − I've said it before: influencers are a cancer to our society. These people are so out of touch with reality.

They really think their word alone is enough to either make or break any business, even a well-established one like your hotel.

The vapid posts and numerous kiss ass comments they get from their followers have gone to their heads and addled them.

ericzku − If my hotel is so s__tty, why are you begging to stay here?

These commenters pointed out that a sold-out hotel does not need extra promotion or influencer attention

RubyRed8787 − A sold out hotel does not need your “influence” 🤣🤣

CountNightAuditor − That rate alone tells me y'all are busy AF

These users joked that negative reviews from entitled customers could actually advertise how popular a business is

SkwrlTail − Just a reminder that people die of exposure.

SkwrlTail − Gotta love the "I'm not getting what I want, therefore it is *your* fault" attitude, combined with invoking authority to punish you for it.

How exactly are your followers going to make there be a room? Are you hoping one of them is staying here, and will leave to make room?

Are you going to get a few to build you a nice little cottage in the back? If she has so many followers, why doesn't she just crash on their...

nutraxfornerves − I then get hit with the "I am an influencer and will tell my audience of how s__tty of a hotel this is! "

There’s a recent post on NotAlwaysRight about a walk-in complaining about not getting an immediate table in a packed restaurant.

The would-be diner said they would post a negative review if they didn’t get a table right away.

The manager’s response was: Please do that! I’d love for people to see how incredibly popular we are.

Do you think influencers should receive perks when they can promote a business, or should everyone follow the same rules? Have you ever witnessed a “Do you know who I am?” moment? Share your thoughts below.
