Lecturer Demands Perfect Attendance, Then Student Reveals Why She’ll Miss Every Other Friday

Starting university can already feel intimidating when you’re surrounded by unfamiliar faces, new expectations, and lecturers you’ve never met before. The last thing anyone needs during those first few weeks is to be singled out in front of an entire class, especially when there is a serious reason behind what they are saying.

When OP was 19, she had just begun studying law at university while dealing with an incredibly difficult situation outside the classroom. During her first meeting with one lecturer, he made it very clear that he expected perfect attendance.

OP quietly explained that she would need to miss class every other Friday, but instead of asking privately why, the lecturer challenged her in front of everyone.

His dismissive response left the normally reserved student embarrassed under a room full of stares. What he didn’t know was that OP had an answer capable of changing the atmosphere instantly. Keep reading to see how she responded.

A student with cancer shuts down a rude lecturer after he questions her planned absences

'Satisfying response to rude lecturer when I had cancer'

I’m a 29 year old woman from England, but at the time of this pointless story I was only 19,

I just started at Uni to study Law and I’m autistic so usually quite reserved especially in a brand new place out of my comfort zone.

At the time I had recently been diagnosed with cancer of the womb (Choriocarcinoma).

We meet this lecturer for the first time and he goes on a big spiel about attendance how we are expected to not miss ANY of his lectures.

I said “I will be absent every other Friday.” He looks at me and says “Why? Unless you are lying in a hospital bed I don’t want to hear it."

I remember going bright red under everyone’s stares and replied “Well, I suppose I’m in luck then. I will be in a hospital bed,

I have chemotherapy every other Friday, and have to travel to Sheffield to the specialty cancer hospital there.”

And then it was his turn to go red while mumbling about that being a valid excuse.

Normally, I wouldn’t have given explicit details but I felt at the time like he was trying to embarrass me and so it felt justified to embarrass him right back.

Being forced to explain something deeply personal can hurt almost as much as the insensitive remark that caused it. Privacy gives people control over when, where, and with whom they share difficult parts of their lives.

For this 19-year-old student, that control disappeared in a lecture hall full of strangers. She had just started university, was autistic and naturally reserved in an unfamiliar environment, and was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. Yet a simple notice about unavoidable absences suddenly became a public test of whether her reason was “serious enough.”

The lecturer may have intended to establish strict expectations around attendance, but his response created an unnecessary confrontation. By saying he did not want an explanation unless she was lying in a hospital bed, he effectively assumed that absence meant irresponsibility before knowing anything about her circumstances.

Her answer was satisfying because it reversed that assumption instantly. Still, underneath the humor was something uncomfortable: she had to disclose cancer treatment to an entire room simply to have her absence treated as legitimate.

A different perspective makes the exchange even more interesting. Many readers might see her response as clever revenge, but it can also be understood as reclaiming control. She described herself as reserved, yet when publicly challenged, she responded with precise facts rather than apologizing or shrinking away.

The embarrassment that followed was not something she manufactured from nothing. Her lecturer had created a standard so extreme that her circumstances happened to meet it literally. She simply allowed him to hear the consequence of his own words.

Education and autism consultant Joe Butler explains through the National Autistic Society that communication between autistic and non-autistic people can involve mutual misunderstandings.

Importantly, he argues that responsibility for successful communication should not be placed entirely on the autistic person; educators should also consider whether their language is clear, inclusive, and appropriate.

The organization separately notes that deciding whether to disclose an autism diagnosis is personal, partly because disclosure can bring support but can also expose someone to misunderstanding or judgment.

That insight applies beyond autism. Students should not have to reveal intimate medical information publicly before an educator responds with basic consideration.

A more flexible initial response would have allowed the student to explain privately or use the university’s formal absence procedures without turning her health into classroom information.

The most useful lesson, then, is less about producing the perfect comeback and more about protecting dignity. Universities can set demanding attendance standards while still providing confidential processes for exceptional circumstances.

Students facing serious health issues can also document treatment-related needs and work through disability or student-support services where appropriate.

In England, education providers have duties concerning reasonable adjustments for disabled students. Her comeback may have been satisfying, but she should never have needed cancer to prove that compassion was warranted.

These commenters focused on the emotional pain and hoped the poster was doing okay

ranbootookmygender − this would be perfect for r/traumatizethemback lol. hope you're doing okay op!

tzippora − I hope you're okay now.

[Reddit User] − My lecturer once asked upon my return to class if my great grandmother was "Dead yet? "

Because I informed her via email I was missing two classes to see her while I still could. I wish I had a better comeback other than saying quietly yes...

These Redditors loved the comeback and found the moment deeply satisfying

AppropriateRip9996 − "I'm in luck then" kills me.

isaitz − Omigod I bet that was sooososo satisfying.

BalladofBadBeard − This is epic.

This commenter questioned why the issue was not handled privately after class or by email

felinelawspecialist − I’m going to get downvoted all to hell for this, but any reason why you didn’t talk to him after class or by email?

These users praised the poster’s courage and treated them like a classroom hero

Plastic_Concert_4916 − Good for you! If I had been in your class when you said this, you would have been my hero.

ExchangeInside2407 − You are amazing

Was the student justified in giving the lecturer every uncomfortable detail after he challenged her publicly? Or would a private conversation have handled it better? Share your take below!
