In a recent interview with People magazine, Nyong’o acknowledged the emotional intensity of portraying a character facing mortality. “It was challenging to delve into such a vulnerable space,” she stated, “especially considering Sam confronts her own mortality even before the alien threat emerges.”
The role held particular significance for Nyong’o due to the passing of her close friend and Black Panther co-star, Chadwick Boseman, in August 2020. Boseman succumbed to colon cancer at the age of 43 after a private battle with the illness.
“Ultimately, the experience proved to be quite therapeutic,” Nyong’o explained. “Chadwick’s passing, just a few years prior, had a profound impact on me. I found myself reflecting on it a great deal while filming.”
Nyong’o elaborated on the personal growth she experienced, stating, “Playing Sam reminded me of the importance of cherishing our time.
