Man Backs Out Of Hawaii Trip, But Family Still Expects Him To Pay Their Tickets

Family vacations often sound like a wonderful way to create memories, but planning them can reveal deeper disagreements about expectations, money, and respect. A generous offer can become complicated when the original plan changes and the people involved no longer feel like they are part of the decision-making process.

The original poster (OP) agreed to help pay for a dream Hawaii trip for his mother as a Christmas surprise. However, disagreements over where everyone would stay caused a major conflict, and OP’s family eventually decided not to go.

While they were apart, the rest of the family continued planning the vacation without them, but later still expected OP to contribute the money he had originally promised. Now, OP is questioning whether he should honor his offer or step back after feeling excluded from the final plans. Scroll down to see what Reddit had to say about this family vacation dispute.

A family Hawaii trip falls apart over accommodations, leaving one sibling questioning whether a financial promise still stands after deciding not to go

'AITA for refusing to pay for my parents and sister’s Hawaii trip ?'

Backstory: my brother approached me about surprising my mom for Christmas 2025 with a trip to Hawaii since she’s always wanted to go.

I agreed to pay for half her ticket and my stepdad and sister.

However during the planning of the trip we got into an altercation about the sleeping arrangements and my brother

( we will call him Bryan)became stressed out about accommodations. He wanted to stay in an Airbnb together.

But since it wasn’t working, my wife and I suggested staying at a resort so we could accommodate everyone. Bryan didn’t like that.

It turned into and argument and he insisted we stay together so instead we suggested he and my parents stay in a house

(since that’s what he wanted) and we ( my family and I) and my sister wanted to stay at a resort.

He refused and insisted we all stay together at a house. He whole thing blew up and my family and I basically decided we weren’t going.

During the this time that we were not speaking they all decided to go anyways and make plans without us.

We have made up since then and now they are requesting I stick to paying my half for my parents and sister that I had offered.

Since I’m no longer going I feel that it’s not fair for them to ask this of me. Am I the a__hole?

Update: since people keep asking no this was not the only Christmas’s gift she received. I had already purchased multiple gifts for her.

My brother approached me on Christmas Day asking if I would help out and I told him yes.

He already had Leigh’s and the whole thing planned. Things only changes when we stopped talking.

I love my mom and would have wanted to pay for her trip anyway but since then she has been so petty with me also

and has reduced communication and seemingly acts as if it’s my fault as well.

My stepdad however agrees with me and says a resort would have solved all our issue.

My brother however keeps asking me to pay my half as well as my mom. I cannot bring myself

To do it without resentment. I also want to add that my wife and I had a 10 yr anniversary trip

Planned in July of 2026 that everyone knew about since 2025. The Hawaii trip was planned for September of 2026

which I expressed would be cutting it close. No one cared. I was still going to make it work. But ultimately everything happens for. A reason.

A generous promise can feel very different once the circumstances surrounding it change. People often agree to help family because they want to share an experience, create a memory, or make someone happy. When the relationship deteriorates afterward, following through can begin to feel less like generosity and more like paying a debt nobody formally agreed existed.

In this situation, the OP was not simply reconsidering whether to buy plane tickets. The original offer was tied to a family trip they expected to experience together. After arguments over accommodations, exclusion from later planning, reduced contact, and lingering resentment, that emotional agreement changed significantly.

The brother and mother appear to view the promise as unconditional: OP said they would contribute, therefore the money is still owed. OP sees it as part of a larger family plan that effectively ended when their household withdrew.

There is another perspective worth considering. The brother may be focused on the literal promise because he built the trip budget around it, while OP is focused on everything that happened afterward. Neither interpretation is completely irrational. Yet money between relatives becomes especially combustible when expectations remain unstated.

A gift made freely can quickly feel transactional when someone begins demanding it. Once resentment enters the equation, even paying voluntarily can leave the giver feeling manipulated rather than generous.

Licensed clinical social worker Gabriella Giachin explains that emotional boundaries help people protect their emotional well-being and determine how much energy they can safely give within relationships.

Verywell Mind also notes that boundaries may need to change as circumstances and relationships evolve rather than remaining permanently fixed. This is particularly relevant when financial generosity becomes connected to guilt, obligation, or unresolved family conflict.

That does not automatically erase OP’s earlier commitment. If relatives made nonrefundable purchases specifically because they reasonably relied on that promise, backing out deserves more careful consideration.

But if no money was spent on OP’s behalf and the family simply continued planning a different vacation after OP withdrew, expecting the original contribution becomes much harder to justify.

The most useful solution may be separating love from financing. OP can decide whether they still genuinely want to gift anything to their mother without treating the brother’s demands as binding. If paying would produce lasting resentment, declining may be healthier than handing over money while feeling coerced.

Family generosity works best when it remains voluntary. A promise deserves consideration, but changed circumstances deserve consideration too. Sometimes maintaining a boundary means accepting that relatives will be disappointed rather than purchasing peace at the cost of resentment.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors agreed OP shouldn’t pay for a trip she is no longer attending

Lately_early − NTA - if you aren’t going, why should you pay?

Calm_Initial − NTA — you agreed to pay half when you were going

Just_Bz77 − They decided to go anyway, so there is no obligation. Bryan can pay for it all. NTA

These Redditors focused on whether the trip was truly meant as a gift for their mother

Ordinary-Chipmunk366 − Wasn't this trip about your mom?

CowRevolutionary734 − Update: since people keep asking no this was not the only Christmas’s gift she received.

I had already purchased multiple gifts for her. My brother approached me on Christmas Day asking if I would help out and I told him yes.

He already had Leigh’s and the whole thing planned. Things only changes when we stopped talking.

These commenters felt Bryan’s “my way or the highway” attitude ended OP’s financial obligation

Naive_Market_9688 − Your brother came to you with a proposal to do a nice thing for the family but he was intractable about the arrangements;

basically it was his way or the highway.

If he wants to stick to his guns and do things strictly his way to the point where you decided not to go on the trip then let him pay...

He didn't seem to care about your feelings or needs or anything like that when you were discussing the plans so he doesn't need your money.

Maybe he's not going to talk to you again then withholding the money isn't going to change that.

Dittoheadforever − You're NTA  Bryan's *my way or the highway* attitude broke up the deal.

Karma_Kissess − You are not an ATM. You offered to help with a family trip. They excluded you and still want the cash. That is not reasonable.

This group criticized the family for making arrangements without OP and expecting money afterward

bunnyshenanigans − NTA. They planned a trip without your input.

Sufficient_Song3387 − No. They made plans without you after you told them that you were out.

They should have asked if you would be willing to fund their trip before they booked it.

You would have told them no and I'm sure they knew that. Instead, they went ahead, thinking that they could guilt you into paying later.

Would it be fairest for him to still pay only his mother’s portion, or should Bryan accept that losing a traveler also meant losing that traveler’s contribution? And once resentment enters a family gift, is paying anyway generous or simply expensive peacekeeping?
