Man Bans Friend From NYE Party After Her Son Damages His Amiibo Collection

When you host a party, you get to set the guest list. But one man’s decision to exclude a friend from his New Year’s Eve celebration sparked a massive argument about boundaries, collectibles, and parental responsibility.

The reason for the ban was simple: the friend’s six-year-old son had damaged the host’s prized, locked collection of Amiibo figures the previous year. The damage was bad, but the mother’s reaction, ridiculing the host and refusing to pay, was the real dealbreaker.

Now, the mother is furious, calling the host “childish” for prioritizing his collection over their friendship.

Now, read the full story:

AITA for not inviting someone to NY party because of their son?

I'm a 31 male.

I usually host NY partys at my house, i have a considerable amount of amiibo figures

that i have collected over the years, enclosed in a glass showcase that has a key.

I keep it locked because two of my female friends have kids and i like having them over, its fine.

The thing is, i have three mom friends in my group. Lets call her Lucy, has a 6 year old son.

And at last new year (2022/2023) i forgot the key in the showcase and he played with my amiibos, just playing tho,

would have been fine, but he ripped them off the bases, damaging a few (link became legless)

i complained and asked for her to pay me back for the damaged ones, but she just ridiculed it and brushed it off.

So this year out of a small amount of spite, i didn't invite her. No one at the party even seemed to notice.

Today, i get the angry text, saying that she really likes my party and its a shame i forgot she was my friend and why didn't i invite her.

i said it was because of what happened last year, that i didn't want her child near my collection again.

she said i was childish (which i admit that regarding some aspects of my personality and regarding damaging my stuff, i am)

and said i was an [jerk] and that that wasn't a reason to not invite someone and that her child was just playing.

Some friends say that it's ok, that it's understandable (even my two other friends with kids that have known me for years understand)

and others agree that i’m the [jerk]. So reddit, AITA?.

This situation is a perfect lesson in the difference between an accident and a lack of respect. The OP admitted it was his mistake for leaving the key in the lock, allowing the six-year-old access. The child’s actions were typical for his age.

However, the mother’s reaction was the true offense. She didn’t just refuse to pay the modest €136 replacement cost; she “ridiculed” the OP and “brushed it off.” That reaction showed a profound lack of respect for his property, his hobbies, and his friendship.

The OP’s decision to uninvite her was not about punishing the child; it was about protecting his boundaries from a disrespectful adult. He is entirely justified in choosing his peace of mind over a friendship that clearly views his belongings as disposable.

The High Cost of Collectibles and Parental Responsibility

The value of the Amiibo figures, around €136 for the damaged ones, might seem small to some, but the principle is huge. For collectors, items often hold sentimental value far exceeding their replacement cost, especially since many were gifts from friends.

The mother’s refusal to pay for the damage caused by her child is a failure of basic parental responsibility. As the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizes, teaching children to take responsibility for their mistakes, including financial restitution, is a crucial part of moral development.

The mother’s excuse that the child was “just playing” is a common form of deflection. A 2023 survey by Credit Karma found that 40% of parents reported experiencing financial stress due to unexpected costs related to their children, yet most parents understand that paying for damage is non-negotiable.

The mother’s refusal to pay, coupled with her mockery, is what broke the friendship. As relationship expert Dr. John Gottman notes, contempt—which ridiculing a friend’s passion certainly qualifies as, is one of the most destructive behaviors in any relationship. [Source: The Gottman Institute]

Check out how the community responded:

The consensus was overwhelmingly NTA, with Redditors arguing that the mother’s refusal to pay for the damage was the real reason for the ban.

swag_mom - NTA. It would have been different if she had paid for the damaged items,

but the fact that she didn’t indicates she doesn’t respect your belongings, and therefore, you.

Also indicates the kid could have damaged more of your property without ramifications.

COLGkenny - NTA entitled mom raising an entitled kid. Absolutely shocking behavior from the mother

to not even pay for what her kid broke. Maybe this is a friendship that you need to move on from.

Salm228 - Your property got damaged childish or not and she didn’t even pay you back yea Nta

Many users pointed out that the mother’s refusal to compensate was the key sign of disrespect.

NomNom83WasTaken - NTA If I was a guest in someone else's house and my 6 y. o. not only got into things they weren't supposed to touch

but then broke anything, I would apologize and offer to pay for it before the owner even asked me to.

It is never too late to apologize and yet she would sooner play dumb, double down and call you names.

Hereforaita1234 - NTA. Send her a bill for the damaged figure.

Your belongings have value and if her child damaged your belongings she should have repaired or replaced it.

Commenters emphasized that the mother’s behavior was the problem, not the child’s accident.

Todd_and_Margo - NTA, but I’m not sure why you’re still friends with this person. I agree with her that he was just being a kid.

It sounds like you also agree with her. But part of having kids is paying for damages they cause when they got into things without you noticing.

If she had issues with you leaving the case unlocked, she should have said as much and proposed splitting the damages or something.

But to just flatly refuse and blow off your concerns? That’s not a good friend.

yalldointoomuch - NTA. Allowing your son to get into things he had no permission to, causing significant financial damage,

and refusing to pay for it all have consequences. And one of those consequences is no longer being permitted in my home.

The OP made the right choice. He set a clear boundary, and when his friend responded with contempt and disrespect, he removed her from his life. The ban wasn’t about the Amiibos; it was about the mother’s refusal to act like a responsible adult and friend.

Do you think the OP should have given her a second chance, or was the ban the only way to protect his property and his peace?
