Man Files For Divorce After Wife Cheats, Then The Internet Notices The Ridiculous Details

Relationships can survive enormous changes in appearance, confidence, and circumstances, but repeated betrayal is much harder to explain away. I think that is especially true when one partner has spent years trying to reassure the other that attraction was never the real problem.

One 35-year-old Redditor says he stayed devoted to his wife, Patty, through major weight gain after pregnancy and continued telling her she was loved and desirable. According to him, however, her self-esteem kept falling, and she began seeking validation from other men. Eventually, the cheating became too frequent to ignore, and he filed for divorce.

That should have made the reason fairly clear, but Patty’s family focused on something else entirely and accused him of leaving because of her size. Scroll down to see why the OP insists this marriage ended over infidelity, not weight.

A husband considers divorce after repeated cheating, while his wife’s family accuses him of abandoning her over weight

'AITA for leaving my obese wife for cheating?'

I (35m) have been with my wife Patty (28f) for ten years. When we first started dating, she was quite petite at 5'5" and 110 lbs.

She gained weight during pregnancy and continued to do so (presumably because of hormones, but I *have* noticed her increased food intake),

becoming three times as heavy as of now (330 lbs). You would think that *I'd* be the cheating spouse, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

I loved Patty when she was smaller, I loved her during pregnancy, and I still love her now.

Unfortunately, her self-esteem has gone down significantly, causing her to believe herself as unattractive and worthless.

I did my best to convince her otherwise, but she resorted to seeking attention from other men to cope.

At this point, I lost count of how many tims she's cheated and how many men she's cheated with.

I can't stand it anymore. I feel bad for her situation, but I shouldn't tolerate being cheated on anymore.

I filed for divorce, but now her family's blowing up my phone, accusing me of being f__phobic. I'm not f__phobic; I just have moral values about a__ltery. AITA?

Loving someone through a major physical and emotional change can be painful when that love still is not enough to protect the relationship.

The husband says he continued loving Patty as her body changed, while she increasingly viewed herself as unattractive and worthless. That makes the situation sad rather than simple. Her declining self-esteem may have created a powerful need for outside reassurance, but repeated infidelity left her husband carrying the consequences of how she chose to cope.

The central emotional dynamic is the difference between understanding a behavior and accepting it. Patty may genuinely have been struggling with body image, insecurity, and a desperate need to feel desirable.

Those feelings deserve empathy. Yet her husband also appears to have reached the point where betrayal outweighed his desire to keep rescuing the marriage. Filing for divorce does not necessarily mean he stopped loving her. Sometimes love survives after trust does not.

A fresh perspective is that the family’s accusation of fatphobia may actually obscure Patty’s agency. If every affair is explained primarily through her weight or low confidence, she becomes almost passive in her own decisions.

That can sound compassionate, but it also removes responsibility from her. People with poor self-esteem deserve support; they are still accountable for how they treat their partners.

Couples therapist Ilona Salmons explains in Psychology Today that low self-esteem and insecurity can sometimes contribute to infidelity because outside attention provides temporary validation.

She also emphasizes that affairs are breaches of trust that can cause profound emotional distress, self-worth problems, hypervigilance, and detachment in the betrayed partner.

Repair requires much more than identifying why the cheating happened; it requires accountability, boundaries, and genuine commitment from both people.

That framework fits this marriage closely. Patty’s insecurity could help explain why attention from other men felt soothing without making her husband’s pain less legitimate.

If the cheating happened repeatedly, so often that he says he lost count, the problem is no longer a single lapse during a difficult period. It is a pattern that repeatedly violated the terms of their marriage.

Another therapist writing about betrayal notes that people who are cheated on often begin carrying shame that properly belongs to the betrayal itself, asking what the affair says about their attractiveness or worth.

The husband should be careful not to fall into the reverse version of that trap and believe Patty’s struggles make him morally responsible for enduring unlimited betrayal.

The most realistic path is to separate compassion from obligation. He can hope Patty eventually rebuilds her self-worth while still ending a marriage that no longer feels emotionally safe.

Divorce does not prove he rejected her body. Based on the story presented, it shows that repeated cheating eventually became a boundary he was unwilling to keep surrendering.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These users sarcastically joked that gaining weight meant she deserved even more love and partners

[Reddit User] − You better dump her, it’s disrespectful to get fat.

If she’s 3x her size that means she’s basically 3 women which makes her 3x more likely to cheat, that’s science.

raving_perseus − Wow best post and replies combo I've seen in a very long time, also YTA if she's 3 times the size you

need to love her 3 times as much and put in 3 times the effort. F__king quitter should be ashamed of yourself

Useful-Winter8320 − YTA. She might’ve cheated, but you clearly didn’t love her enough. She’s the size of three wives now,

so she deserves three times the love, and three times the men.

These Redditors parodied overly supportive relationship advice by treating the cheating as something OP should enable

CremeBerlinoise − This is gonna be 90% r/lostredditors again, isn't it? 😅 Also, obviously YTA, be more supportive.

Maybe you could offer some snacks and gatorade to her dates when they come over?

vooboobshnoobvoob − YTA for not supporting her enough through difficult times like these. She’s the Angel for being 28F.

These users mocked blame-shifting by pretending OP simply failed to make her feel attractive enough

Bubbly_Performer4864 − YTA. Should have CALMLY reminded her the weight was her fault and CALMLY

tell her if she wants to be attractive again she should be doing cardio. Although it sounds like she is now!

asystole_unshockable − Clearly your fault. You didn’t try hard enough to make all 3 of her feel attractive, what was she supposed to do?

Just continue receiving unconditional love?

You weren’t even thoughtful enough to properly keep track of how many men she cheated with. This is why we choose the bear.

These commenters leaned into the cuck-chair joke and mocked the idea of endless accommodation

BonitaNoir − YTA Have you thought about buying a cuck chair for yourself? That young woman is using the only cure available for her postpartum depression.

Ok-Direction-8257 − YTA for that age gap. 35 and 28?! You creep! I don't care if she's a big fatty fat fatty fat fatface

(I mean I do care, fat people are immoral and gross), you shouldn't be dating a literal child!

Now you're stuck together forever (I assume the child is still around? ), you should be more supportive!

Get a cuck chair and go bake her a cake FFS!   Men 🙄

Current_Echo3140 − Info: is your wife exotic and bisexual??

Do you think staying supportive through someone’s struggles should have limits? Or should couples fight harder before ending a long relationship? Share your thoughts below!
