Man Fired From Family Business For No Good Reason—Now They’re Begging Him To Come Back

A Redditor recently shared a tale that feels ripped from a family drama—complete with corporate betrayal, awkward reunions, and some delicious poetic justice. Imagine working hard, hitting every target, and then getting tossed out of the family business like expired office snacks. Years later, the same people who showed you the door are begging for your return—and blaming you when you say no.

That’s exactly what happened to one man who climbed the ladder elsewhere after his cousin gave him the boot. Now that the “family” company is floundering, they want him back… but he’s not biting. As expected, this has turned into a full-blown family feud. Curious how it all played out? Keep reading.

Man Fired From Family Business For No Good Reason—Now They’re Begging Him To Come Back

One man’s refusal to return to his cousin’s failing family business, after being fired for no good reason, fractured family ties

'Aita For Refusing To Go Back To The 'Family' Business After They Kicked Me ?'

Back story, my uncle recently retired and give a medium sized business to my cousin. The first thing he did was not renewing my contract in the company and give new position to his friends and immediate family.

I was mad on why I didn't get a new contract even I managed to hit my KPI all the time, while his friends and immediate family didn't even hit their KPI most of the time. He said that things are changing with him in charge and sadly my services is no longer needed. I was pissed but accepted my fate and I begin to search for a new job. A competitor company took interest of me and hired me. I join the company as the pay is good.

I have been working for that company for 2 years and I managed to gain like 2 position up and beginning to be more involved with managerial roles. My cousin's company didn't do well, and during a family reunion he asked me to come back as he need people like me to save the company.

I refused and it causes some family fighting as some said I don't care about family and only care about money. I replied with what stopping him to kick me out again when the company is back on the feet. Sadly that causes more conflict and fighting. Now my family and cousin's family is fractured because of this.. AITA for not helping my cousin company after he kicked me out in the first place ?

Family businesses can feel like the emotional Olympics—equal parts loyalty tests, passive-aggressive commentary, and last-minute guilt trips. This poster’s story has it all. At the heart of it? A betrayal masked in “business decisions” and a sudden change of heart once the ship started to sink.

The original poster (OP) was performing well and meeting key performance indicators. When the cousin took over, OP was axed while underperforming friends and relatives were handed the reins. Fast forward two years: OP’s thriving elsewhere, but the cousin’s company isn’t. Cue the guilt-tripping family reunion invitation.

This isn’t just a family squabble—it’s a classic example of exploitative loyalty. “Family” gets used as a lever to guilt people into sacrificing opportunities. According to Sage Therapy, “Obligation rooted in guilt rarely leads to healthy, sustainable relationships.”

So why do people like OP’s cousin expect blind loyalty? Because they never imagined they’d need the person they once discarded. It’s not about trust or reconciliation—it’s about desperation. Let’s not forget, OP didn’t just move on—they succeeded. That alone can be threatening to people who once held power over you.

And let’s talk about those family members suddenly piping up about “not caring about family.” Where were they when OP got the boot for no reason? Emotional accountability has a short memory when failure enters the picture. In fact, a 2022 report from the Family Business Alliance found that 60% of failed family businesses cited internal politics and nepotism as major contributors.

The takeaway? You’re not obligated to step back into a toxic environment just because there’s shared DNA. Boundaries, especially in professional settings, are not betrayals—they’re survival tools. OP has every right to protect their progress. Sometimes, the best way to honor family is by not letting them walk all over you—again.

Reddit’s crew roared support for the Redditor, slamming his cousin’s betrayal and the family’s hypocritical loyalty demands

These users condemned the cousin’s betrayal and claimed that the cousin has no right to claim family loyalty after sidelining OP for underperforming friends

actually_kate − NTA. He kicked you out when things were going well and now wants you to help when things aren’t anymore. You’re entirely right to assume he would do it again if you helped him fix things at the company. People put too much stock in forgiving family no matter what. Sometimes families consist of assholes like your cousin, and you are under no obligation to help him s**ew you over again.

Mopper300 − NTA and don't you dare go back there. Cousin just wants to use you. He don't give a damn about you. How the hell he gonna complain that you don't care about family? He didn't care about family much when he fired you, did he? F*ck that guy.

Illuminarrator − NTA 1. He fired you. You don't need to go back. 2. It's his fault your not there, he has no right to get upset. 3. He does not get to claim family is more important and you only care about money when HE fired you first.

4. You don't have to give up a good job to go working at a failing company for less pay for someone who fired you when your were outperforming other employees. It makes 0 sense to go back. There's no incentive.

Toodyfish − NTA, your cousin is the one who ruined his business and chased you away and now he's the one who has to deal with the consequences of that decision.

Some supported OP’s career choice, emphasizing he’s not obligated to leave a good job for a failing one

No-Policy-4095 − NTA - You have a job that is working well for you right now, you're not under any obligation to leave that job to take a job because it's family. Where was the outrage when you were let go? Take care of yourself... if you don't feel it's worth leaving your current job, then don't.

[Reddit User] − NTA. He kicked you out and gave positions to his friends and people he wanted, knowing that they didn't perform well. He signed his own fate by getting rid of someone who was doing well. You are probably right where he will hire you and get the company back up and running and then fire you afterword.

LoveBeach8 − NTA Nope! They only want you now for one thing and that's not good enough. They actually did you a favor by kicking you out! There's no going back and you know this. Being family doesn't matter because they didn't keep you because you were family, now, did they?

These commenters criticized family hypocrisy

wikideenu − NTA, pretty arrogant of him to kick you out of nothing there was any repercussion. He can't claim the family card if he fired you first.

TwoCentsPsychologist − NTA And to all family complaining about “caring about family”, asking where were they when cousin just fired you 2 years ago? The company’s failing is entirely his doing.

Simply_Sophie − NTA. Your cousin is manipulative. He's asking you for a favour in order to save the company because he is running it into the ground. He deliberately excluded you, so he should live with the consequences.

It’s never easy to say “no” to family—especially when everyone’s watching. But in this case, many readers applauded the poster’s backbone. Sometimes the best way to break a cycle is to walk away from the people who once pushed you out.

What would you do if your family fired you, only to call when the ship started sinking? Would you jump back in—or let them swim?
