Man Gets Tired of Being the Punchline, Then Turns His Friend’s Running Joke Against Him

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

A joke can be funny the first few times, but when someone keeps bringing up the same thing for months, it can slowly stop feeling like a joke.

The hardest part is deciding when to laugh along and when to admit that the humor has crossed a line.

One man shared a situation involving his longtime friend, who turned a small mistake into a constant running joke.

After briefly forgetting to return one borrowed item, he apologized and fixed the issue, expecting everyone to move on. Instead, his friend continued using the incident as a way to tease him in front of others.

At first, he tried to ignore it and avoid making things awkward, but eventually the repeated comments became exhausting.

During a gathering with friends, he decided to respond in a way that finally addressed the joke.

Scroll down to see whether people thought he went too far.

Man finally pushes back after his friend turns an old borrowed lamp mistake into a constant public joke

'AITBF for handing my friend his stuff back in the middle of a party after he kept joking that I was still living off his things?'

I’m 30M. One of my friends, Dan, has this habit of turning one small true

thing into a whole running bit and then acting like everyone else is weird

for eventually getting tired of it. About a year ago, when I was moving

apartments, he lent me a few things for maybe two weeks. A folding chair,

a lamp, and one of those cheap metal side tables that looks okay until you

touch it and realize it weighs about eight ounces. I gave everything back

except the lamp, because I genuinely forgot it was his. The second he

noticed it at my place a month later, I apologized, gave it back, and thought

that was the end of it. It was not the end of it. Since then, he’s been doing

this annoying little “haha Dmytro still survives off borrowed property”

routine whenever people are around. Not every time I see him, but often

enough that it has fully calcified into his favorite version of me. If

somebody mentions furniture, he’ll go “careful, or he’ll take it home.” If I

host, he’ll ask if anything in the room legally belongs to me. People laugh

because on the surface it sounds harmless, and because Dan says

everything like he’s awarding the room a gift.

Last weekend a few of us were at another friend’s birthday thing, maybe

fifteen people, drinks, music, people drifting between the kitchen and

living room. At one point somebody complimented my jacket and before I

could answer Dan goes, “Don’t praise him too much, he might borrow your

closet next.” People laughed again. I kind of smiled because that’s what

you do when you don’t want to become the uptight guy who “can’t take a

joke,” but I was honestly done. The stupid part is that earlier that same day

I had found a paperback book and a phone charger at my apartment that

were actually his from months ago. He’d left them behind and I kept

forgetting to bring them. So I went to the hallway where coats were piled,

grabbed my bag, came back into the living room, handed him the charger

and book in front of everyone, and said, “Here, figured I should return

these before this becomes your whole personality for another year.” The

room did that ugly little half-laugh thing where people instantly know

something stopped being fun. Dan got red and said I was being dramatic

and trying to embarrass him over “obvious jokes.” I told him maybe he

should’ve retired the joke before it needed a closing ceremony. He left

maybe twenty minutes later.

Now a couple people are saying I made it too pointed and could’ve just

talked to him privately. That would sound reasonable if I hadn’t already told

him twice, lightly but clearly, that the joke was old. Both times he did that

dismissive “relax, man” thing, which I think is just rude with better

branding. So yeah, I did choose a moment that made him look stupid, but

part of me feels like he kept picking a public stage, so I finally answered on

the same stage. AITBF?

A joke stops being harmless when the person being joked about is no longer laughing.

Humor depends on shared enjoyment, and once one person becomes the permanent target, the interaction can shift from playful teasing into something much closer to social pressure.

The OP’s frustration was not really about a forgotten lamp.

He admitted the mistake, returned the item, and corrected the situation as soon as he realized what happened.

The problem was that Dan turned a one-time accident into a repeated identity label.

Over time, the joke stopped being about a borrowed object and became a public reminder that the OP was supposedly unreliable.

Even though others laughed, the OP was quietly carrying the discomfort of being reduced to one embarrassing moment.

His final response was not simply about the charger and book; it was about pushing back against a pattern he felt had been ignored.

A different perspective is that Dan may have genuinely believed he was doing normal friend banter.

Some friendships are built around exaggerated teasing, and people sometimes fail to notice when a joke has expired because everyone else continues laughing.

The problem is that laughter from the group does not automatically mean the person being teased is enjoying it.

A joke can be funny to an audience while still making the target feel disrespected.

The important factor is whether the relationship allows someone to say, “This has gone too far,” and have that concern taken seriously.

That perspective explains why the OP’s response feels both understandable and imperfect.

Waiting until a group setting created a sharper moment of embarrassment for Dan, but the OP was also responding in the same environment where the joke had repeatedly been performed.

He had already tried the softer approach and felt dismissed.

His comment about returning the items was essentially a mirror: he used Dan’s own style of public humor to show how exhausting it had become.

Still, the larger lesson is that friendships survive better when people address irritation before it becomes resentment.

Dan may not have realized how much the joke had affected the OP, but once someone says a running joke is no longer funny, the respectful response is not to argue about whether the joke was objectively harmless.

The real issue was never the lamp. It was whether Dan valued getting a laugh more than valuing his friend’s comfort.

A good friendship should leave room for both humor and the ability to say, “Alright, that joke has had its run.”

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters agreed OP was right to call out repeated jokes after private warnings failed

ThrowAway4now2022 − Oh it's ok for you to be embarrassed but not him?

Tough noogies. You are NTB for finally calling him out. Most jokes are only

funny the first time, if that.

ThatTotal2020 − NTBF You addressed it privately and he continued likely

cause he liked the attention. But he didn’t like a taste of his own “joke” he’s not the victim

Longjumping_Quit5206 − NTBF - but I would have closed my argument

after he got pissed with the same: :"relax man, it was just a joke"

IamNotTheMama − If you're going to dish it out, you've got to be able to

take it also. Dan cannot - tough for him, good for you

These Redditors believed Dan enjoyed teasing others but could not handle being teased himself

Heavy-Profit-2156 − Dan doesn't like being the b__t of those comments, he

just wants to be making them. Too bad. I wonder if this will be an epiphany for him?

QueenKissntel − NTA, that "before this becomes your whole personality for

another year" line is absolutely lethal and he 100% deserved it for being a one-trick pony.

PilotEnvironmental46 − You did nothing wrong. In fact, he may never have

stopped doing it until you embarrassed him since you had already told him

twice it was getting old. I will definitely remember the comment about the closing ceremony😂

These users suggested Dan was not a true friend and supported distancing from him

Cerulean_Shadows − Ntbf and good riddance. Guarantee you others felt

the same but we're too nice

JanetInSpain − He's not a friend. Stop inviting him anywhere. Stop hanging out with him.

Anxious_Article_2680 − Nta and your ex friend made himself look stupid.

This group said the comeback was justified because Dan continued after being told to stop

marspigsmoke − NTBF, especially since you'd already approached him

privately. The fact that he continued AFTER that shows he doesn't care about you.

Odd_Substance_9032 − NBF - finally he got it…. maybe he’ll shut his

mouth…if not let him have it again. He can dish it out but can’t take it….

butchyeugene − Lmao well done. NTBF It is always this way when someone

turns it on the rude "jokester" Can dish it out but can not take it.

The conflict wasn’t really about a forgotten lamp anymore.

It was about a joke that stopped being mutual and became a label one person kept forcing onto another.

Dan may have started with something harmless, but repeating the same joke after being told it was getting old changed the dynamic.

The OP’s comeback was public and intentional, but it came after months of being made into the punchline.

Do you think the OP went too far by calling him out in front of everyone, or was it fair to return the same energy after private hints were ignored?
