A Redditor’s cold response at their cheating ex-wife’s funeral angers her family, who demand grief despite past betrayal. Reddit’s AITA debates: is their detachment heartless or justified?

At the funeral of their unfaithful ex-wife, killed in a car crash, the Redditor’s flat tone shocks her mourning mom, sparking family outrage. The story shows grief versus grudges, with users divided on whether the Redditor’s icy stance is a fair reaction or a cold snub in this raw clash of loyalty and loss.

Man’s indifference at their cheating ex’s funeral stirs family outrage, prompting debate on grief and betrayal.

'AITA because I didn't act sad when my soon to be ex passed away in a car accident?'

Really that's it. We were getting divorced because she cheated. I was upset but not a lot.

She was not getting much from our marriage and we didn't have kids. The only real issue was our dogs.

She passed away after getting into a car accident that wasn't even that serious. Just a fluke that she died.

Her mom called to tell me and was angry that I didn't sound sad. I don't know how to sound sad.

I went to the funeral. Her boyfriend was there. He was visibly upset. People came over to give me condolences. I pointed them all his way.

I don't really understand why her family is upset with me. We were over. But they are all calling me an a__hole for not being sadder.

I want to be clear here. I did love her. Before she cheated. I was angry when she left.

I am not in any way celebrating that she passed away. I just don't care. I'm happy that I get to keep more of our stuff she didn't get to.

Whew, talk about a funeral scene straight out of a dramedy! This Redditor’s story is a messy mix of betrayal, grief, and social expectations gone haywire.

The Redditor’s ex cheated, torching his marriage, and when she died unexpectedly, he couldn’t muster the tears her family expected.

Instead of faking sorrow, he showed up to the funeral, redirected condolences to her boyfriend, and left everyone bristling. Let’s break it down.

First, the Redditor’s indifference makes sense. Betrayal like infidelity can slam the door on emotional attachment.

As one commenter noted, the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. The Redditor loved his ex once, but her cheating flipped a switch, leaving them numb.

He weren’t dancing on her grave, he just didn’t feel the loss. Meanwhile, the family, raw with grief, likely saw the Redditor’s stoicism as callous.

Losing a child is unimaginable, and they might’ve hoped for shared mourning, even from an estranged spouse.

This clash highlights a broader issue: society’s rigid expectations around grief. A 2023 study from the American Psychological Association found that 68% of people feel pressured to display grief publicly, even when it’s not genuine.

The Redditor’s blunt honesty, admitting he cared more about keeping their dogs and assets, rubbed the family raw, but was it wrong? Not necessarily. Grief isn’t a performance, and faking it can feel like betraying oneself.

Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, a renowned grief expert, once said, “The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same. Nor would you want to”.

This applies to the family, but not the Redditor, whose emotional ties were severed pre-death. His presence at the funeral, though, stirred the pot – showing up only to point mourners to the boyfriend felt like a jab, intentional or not.

In the wake of betrayal, the Redditor’s indifference isn’t a lack of humanity, it’s a protective shell forged from pain, allowing him to “live with” the earlier loss of trust rather than layering fresh grief atop old wounds.

Kübler-Ross’s words remind us that healing means reconstruction, where the scars become part of a stronger self. For the family, drowning in their endless mourning, the Redditor’s detachment might seem like salt in the wound, but it underscores a key truth: grief is personal, not performative. One can’t rebuild around a bond that’s already crumbled.

So, what’s the move here? The Redditor could’ve skipped the funeral or offered a polite “I’m sorry for your loss” to keep the peace. For the family, projecting their pain onto the Redditor was unfair. They’re hurting, but he’s not their punching bag. If you’re in a similar spot, try acknowledging others’ grief without compromising your truth.

Check out how the community responded:

Some support OP’s indifference, citing the ex-wife’s betrayal as justification.

Smokin_HOT_Ice − NTA. People think the opposite of love is hate. Nope, the opposite of love is indifference.

She destroyed both your love and your marriage because she opened her legs to another man...

That one ceased to be a part of your life PRIOR to the car accident. If your divorce isn’t finalized yet, that is just a formality.

The marriage ended a long time ago, and only existed on paper.

Confident-Try20 − NTA. Her boyfriend was there?!? And they expected you to break down crying, for the woman who cheated on you??...

You can’t feel sad because you’ve already been hurt by her enough because of the betrayal...

SigSauerPower320 − NTA You’re entitled to show your emotions how ever you see fit...

Why’d they even ask you to go if they were already upset you weren’t sad enough for them?!

S__t, they should be happy you even showed up!!! Most people with no ties to the person (no kids) wouldn’t have even gone given the situation...

Others question OP’s attendance at the funeral or suggest showing minimal empathy.

Lynx_aye9 − Well, it sounds like you weren’t very sympathetic to her parents for their loss.

They did you the courtesy of calling you, could you not have said, “I’m so sorry for your loss.?”... It isn’t about acting, it is about having empathy.

[Reddit User] − NTA for feeling the way you feel, but YTA for still going to her funeral and basically telling all her friends and family that you don’t care.

You could’ve stayed home, or at the very least just said “thank you” when someone expressed their condolences instead of telling them to go to her boyfriend...

Existing_Project_113 − Why did you even go to the funeral?

Some share personal perspectives.

rollonover − Some people turn cold after having been betrayed, it’s understandable that you lost all feeling for her after she cheated.

You probably haven’t processed her death completely yet...

FeistyUnicorn1 − That’s a hard one. I am going through a divorce, my ex cheated on me and was also verbally and emotionally abusive...

If he died I think my only grief would be for our child losing his dad. If you were respectful then NTA.

Bubbly_Satisfaction2 − NTA. Right now I am in a similar space. My grandmother died last night and I’m not sad.

My grandmother was… Not a nice or kind person, when she was alive...

This Redditor’s funeral faux pas left jaws on the floor, but was their chilly demeanor justified? After a marriage wrecked by cheating, expecting them to weep on cue feels like a tall order. Yet, showing up only to redirect condolences added fuel to the family’s fire.

Do you think the Redditor was right to keep it real, or should they have faked a tear for decorum’s sake? How would you handle a grieving family’s expectations when your heart’s checked out? Drop your hot takes!
