Man Plans Expensive Birthday Getaway for His Fiancé, But Friends Hijack the Celebration

Milestone birthdays only come around once, so many people go all out to make them meaningful.

But when another major life event gets added into the mix, it can create unexpected tension, even among close friends.

The original poster (OP) planned a special 40th birthday escape for his fiancé and invited several couples to join them for a relaxing weekend away.

Everything was arranged with his fiancé in mind until one couple decided to include their own wedding plans during the trip.

While OP doesn’t want to dismiss their reasons for choosing this moment, he feels conflicted about how the weekend has changed.

Keep reading to see whether the internet thinks OP is justified or taking things too personally.

Man feels frustrated after his fiancé’s birthday trip with friends is unexpectedly overshadowed

'Friends are planning to get married on my fiance's 40th birthday trip without asking us first?'My fiancé is turning 40 this year and to celebrate his big day, we booked a

large vacation house in a resort area for a long weekend and invited four

other couples to come and celebrate for the weekend. We are paying for

lodging for everyone, but they are expected to pay for flights. I'm planning

a weekend of brunches and dinners and activities for everyone on his

birthday trip.

One of those couples we invited has decided to stop in Vegas on the way

home and elope and get married. They are expecting everyone on the trip

to stop in Vegas too, get hotel rooms in Vegas and attend their wedding.

I understand why they are doing this. Neither of them have any close family

and they are probably thinking that they will already have their friends in

one place. We are all gay men so chosen family is a big thing (i.e. many gays

prioritize friends because they aren't as close with their biological family

due to prejudice). However, I can't help but be annoyed, because I feel like

a weekend that's supposed to be a birthday celebration for my fiancé--

which we spent so much money, time, and energy on--has been

commandeered for their wedding. It is really bizarre because I feel like I'm

essentially planning their wedding for them, since they are going on our

weekend and then getting married at a random Vegas chapel on a Monday.

My fiancé is one of the nicest and most generous people I've ever met. He

would never confront them about this, because that isn't his nature. He did

tell them that we won't be joining them in Vegas because neither of us can

take the extra days off, which is true because we're both maxxed on

vacation for the year. I haven't said or done anything about this. I'm

wondering if I'm being an a__hole here or if my feelings are justified? I'm

also wondering if I should do something? I'm really curious to hear the

internet's thoughts.

When someone puts their heart into creating a meaningful moment for a person they love, it can be painful when that moment starts to feel like it belongs to someone else.

The hurt is often not about the new event itself, but about feeling that the original purpose and effort behind the celebration are being overlooked.

In this situation, OP is not simply annoyed about a wedding happening in the same city.

He is feeling a loss of ownership over an experience that was carefully planned for his fiancé’s milestone birthday.

He and his fiancé invested money, time, and emotional energy into creating a special weekend for their chosen family.

When another couple decided to turn part of that gathering into their own wedding celebration, it likely created the feeling that the attention had shifted away from the person they were trying to honor.

At the same time, OP understands the emotional reasoning behind the couple’s decision, especially within a community where close friendships can become deeply meaningful sources of support.

A different perspective is that this situation highlights a common tension in close friendships: the difference between sharing a meaningful moment and unintentionally taking over someone else’s moment.

The couple getting married may not have viewed it as competition at all.

They may have seen the birthday trip as an opportunity to celebrate two important life events with the people they love.

From their perspective, having their friends nearby could feel like a beautiful and practical solution.

However, good intentions do not always erase the impact of a decision.

A person can be excited and sincere while still unintentionally placing extra expectations on others.

This insight is relevant because OP’s frustration seems less about the couple’s marriage and more about the assumption that everyone should automatically adjust their plans.

The couple did not only announce a wedding; they also expected guests to extend their travel, pay for additional accommodations, and reorganize their time.

Those expectations naturally create pressure, especially when the original trip already had a host and purpose.

OP’s decision to quietly decline attending the Vegas wedding was reasonable.

He and his fiancé can support their friends without giving up their own celebration.

There may not be a need for confrontation, but acknowledging the feeling between them is important so resentment does not build.

Celebrations are often about sharing joy, but they also require consideration.

The best friendships allow people to celebrate each other without one person’s milestone overshadowing another’s.

A thoughtful friend can be happy for someone else while still protecting the meaning of their own special moments.

Here’s what others had to say:

These commenters felt there was no real issue because the wedding happens after the birthday celebration

Dopepizza − I’m confused what the big deal is if it’s after the birthday

weekend? Reading the title made me think it was actually during the

weekend you are celebrating but it’s not it’s on Monday…

Lalablacksheep646 − I don’t see an issue with this? If they were getting

married where the birthday celebration is, yes, that would be terrible but

doing it after in a separate location should not be an issue.

Gamer_Grease − This does not sound like a problem.

These commenters supported viewing it as a shared celebration and embracing multiple happy events together

sociologicalillusion − This is a consequence of having a close-knit group of

friends. Sometimes the momentum of the group takes over, even when

you'd rather it didn't.   I think the long-term vision here is to see it as 'the

more, the merrier. ' How cool is it that you get to celebrate your fiancé'a

birthday with his close friends, and then you all get to celebrate a friend's

wedding?

I'd say there's a lot to be thankful for that week.

Spiritual-TarHeel − I had a friend who got married on another friend’s

birthday. They laugh about not being able to forget the

anniversary/birthday of the other. At the wedding they had everybody sing

& toast the birthday girl. This wedding you’re talking about is AFTER the

birthday celebration. I don’t see what the big deal is.

DonsBirdie − Can’t a friend group celebrate multiple things? It seems like

this would add to the fun weekend?

These commenters criticized OP for wanting too much attention and argued friends can plan important events without centering around one person’s birthday

brownchestnut − Why do they need your fiance's permission to get married

on the day that suits them and their families and their venue and budget

when it's not even on the birthday or at the birthday venue? Sounds pretty

immature to be stewing mad about not being able to be the center of

attention after the celebration has passed.

Lilybeeme − Your friend group can't celebrate a birthday and a marriage in

the same weekend? Yes, wedding talk will probably happen while you're

celebrating the birthday. How much attention does someone need for their

40th birthday? And why did your friends plan their wedding that weekend

when they know it will annoy you? You all sound selfish and exhausting.

Grow up and be happy that you have so much to celebrate.

These commenters acknowledged OP’s feelings but encouraged communication and handling emotions calmly

JaysStar987 − Oof, so this is one of those times where your feelings are

valid, it does feel kind of icky in some ways AND at the same time, its better

to not act on the emotions, just process and move forward. Also check in

with partner Because theyre not technically doing anything wrong BUT this

weekend will become about the wedding in some ways.

I’d say the best way to navigate this is to on actual birthday or very birthday

themed events, if the talk goes over the top/birthday guy is being ignored

(like to the point of obnoxiousnesses, actual rudeness; and check in with

yourself, are you taking what they say as them overstepping because its a

wonky sitch or are they truly overstepping?

) find a way to bring focus on birthday guy. But at the same time, the whole

weekend is never going to be exclusively about the event person unless its

a wedding. So enjoy the community and try taking the high ground.

mayfeelthis − I’d let it be, you and your fiancé celebrate his bday and go

home anyway so it won’t affect y’all. They continue a leg of the journey via

vegas is their choice, don’t plan it for them. It’s theirs to plan and

coordinate who can fly back via Vegas and make it.

bmw5986 − Have you actually talked to them about how much this bothers

you? Communication really is key here.

A birthday celebration planned with love and effort can feel very different when another major life event gets added into the middle of it.

OP clearly understands why the couple chose this moment to elope, especially given the importance of chosen family, but it’s understandable to feel frustrated when a carefully planned milestone for his fiancé starts sharing the spotlight.

The couple’s wedding may be meaningful, but the original purpose of the trip was to celebrate someone else.

Do you think OP is being unfair for feeling annoyed, or did the friends unintentionally take over a special occasion that wasn’t theirs?
